  1. The full moon is November 2 this year, which is a Monday. It should be a busy weekend.

Wow, that is much earlier than the past few years! I's always been much later in November when I've been around. I might miss it this year as I promised to help my daughter move into her new home in November.

It's an early full moon this year, Ian, I think that's the reason.

My annual Songkran visitors decided that this year they would like to try a slightly less chaotic festival so they will be arriving on 30th October to enjoy Loy Krathong/Yi Peng . . . we'll see how that works out!

  2. Why don't you just charge an entry fee redeemable against food and drinks since you think everyone should spend a minimum amount you determine is correct?

Now you're getting into the right mindset, I reckon your chances of passing by the riff-raff scanner are increasing by the moment.

Would the bar sections at Riverside or the Brasserie fit into your survey Mr Bentley? My sister-in-law runs a Karaoke bar in her basement and has done for at least a decade but I'm guessing that doesn't count!

Of course it counts, when we meeting up for a drink at that karaoke joint JxP? :)

You may be disappointed, it's not that kind of karaoke! She has her own anti-riff-raff type policy: you can have anything you like to drink . . . if you can choose between Chang beer and Hang Thong "whisky" and can order it in northern Thai!

However, you do bring up a good point, research of this nature should always be undertaken at street level to ensure accuracy. I'm sure that this is what miltonbentley is working up to.

  4. Other options are to use simulated windows software that operates in the Apple desktop so that you can switch between both operating systems but that didn't work as well for me. Using the first option you have 2 computers in the same package, you just have to turn one off in order to start the other one, that's all.

Thanks for the info. I thought that was the way it worked when i looked at it all last week. But my other question remains: do apple provide any software of their own that does pretty much what microsoft word does? Then i'd not need any windows stuff at all.

femi fan - take a look at openoffice.org, I have not used it on a Mac but there is a version for Macs. I ditched MS Office some time back and have been quite happy with OpenOffice, for your MS Word needs you would just need to remember to save as a .doc when sharing with MS users. OpenOffice is open source software and therefore free, although donations/participation are encouraged but not required.

  5. The ridiculousness of this thread is eclipsed only by the fact that the new sponsors banner links to nowhere.

It seems that this has already been mentioned and lost in the frenzy of unacceptable posts which we have come to expect when dealing with such sensitive topics as pizzas. However, it is quite disappointing to click on a banner and end up nowhere - is it deliberate or are there gremlins at work?

  6. Hmm.

That software (OS) comparing can be done on just one machine - a Mac that is. Because Intel-powered Macs run Windows without the slightest problem (no hacks needed) and Linux runs on anything that has some sort of CPU. Just setup a triple-boot so you can run either OS natively on the same machine, it beats any virtual machine etc.....

    Kind regards.....

    Thanh

Hmm . . . I'd have to buy a Mac first though! :) But I do get what you're saying, thanks for pointing it out. However, if I'm going to pay those prices for a Mac I think I'd feel a bit daft running Windows or Linux as the OS although I can see that there would be times when it may be required.

    Thanks, Thanh,

  7. in the end... i guess it really comes down to your personal choice na...

i say that more to come back to my initial sentence: in the end it comes down to your personal choices. indeed... sometimes it helps to ponder buying a new machine... as it might help us to become a bit more clear... about our goals in life ;-) doesn't it :-)

    *

    whichever machine it'll be -

i hope you'll enjoy & will be able to share your talents with many na :-)

Thank you for taking time to write such a comprehensive post, some excellent points.

I do admit to be tempted by the look and feel of the Macbooks, I'm not sure that the extra expense can be justified simply by the fact that it is a sexy looking machine though!

I am thoroughly fed up with the way Windows machines start off so slick when they are fresh and new and then quite quickly get all clogged up taking painfully long to switch between windows/apps and of course offering up those lovely "not responding" messages and blue screens. If moving to Mac gets rid of those headaches then it may be worth the premium but, and this is a big but, I really want to know that if there is a WiFi signal available I can pick it up and use it . . . I don't understand why Macs may have a problem with WiFi on the move but you are not the first to mention it to me and that could kill any plans for me to move to the Mac.

I started out on a ZX80 (!!) and I did use an Apple IIe at one point and then later on a different Apple desktop machine, I do have a yearning to get back to Mac . . . but I have to be able to justify the cost to myself if nobody else!

Your points about service and compatibility are well made and I think this might be the deal-breaker - I use computers in the same way as I use cars, I have to have a competent mechanic available for anything more complicated than filling up with petrol, putting air in the tyres or water under the bonnet! Consequently I drive a Toyota, I guess this means I am probably destined to remain in the world of IBM/Windows, if I do then I will take the opportunity to turn this beaten up old laptop into a Linux machine and learn more about that OS whilst keeping my day to day work on a new machine.

Why do today that which you can procrastinate over tomorrow . . . ?! ;-)

  8. There's a little workshop just after Mad Dog, I used him several years ago and was happy with his work, has been there for many years which is probably testament enough by itself.

I don't recall the name but if you walk from Thapae Gate to Mad Dog and keep going for a few more metres you will see his yard and then the small shopfront covered in stickers etc.

  9. Thank you nikster, much appreciated.

There is still a great deal of internal debate to be had before I decide which OS to go for, I find it hard to filter out the strong emotions that many people seem to show when they preach the benefits of their preferred system!

Now if only I could run a Windows vs Linux vs Mac test without jeopardising my work and files and then return the two unwanted machines at the end of the test . . . it is quite a chunk of money as well as being an important tool, I really don't like to get these things wrong.

BTW, I have Photoshop and ImageReady as CS2 on my machine. Also, very interested by your comments on Picasa vs iPhoto.

    Thanks again,

    JxP

  10. I'm having similar deliberations to the OP, is there a one stop site that anyone knows of where I could list the software that I cannot live without from my WinXP laptop and see if it can all come with me to a new life with Macbook or Linux?

    JxP

Didn't find anything reasonable... maybe you can just post here which apps you want to take with you. There's replacements for most, in fact apps on the Mac tend to be better made, particularly shareware . . .

This is the list that I believe I could not live without(!):

    Flock

    Firefox

    Chrome

    Thunderbird

    Picasa

    OpenOffice

    Skype

    Google AdWords Editor

    TweetDeck

    Softnik Good Keywords

    IrfanView

    Nvu

    FileZilla

    Adobe Reader

    Adobe Photoshop

    Adobe ImageReady

Having actually written out the list I'm left feeling that I need to take the bull by the horns, decide if it's going to be Mac or Linux and just go for it, maybe this would make for an interesting separate discussion, perhaps I should start a new thread . . .

    What do you think?

    JxP

    OP:

    Apologies for hijacking the thread!

  11. Because she is pretty and has good 'English' press, you all think she is something special.

What has she done? Does anyone know anything about her?

If you knew, you would not support her, in my opinion.

Don't forget she is a Thai Politician, in every sense...

A rhetorical question is only effective if the answer is known to the audience.

I'll admit that I know little about her other than she seems to have made an effort to tidy up Chiang Mai, albeit cosmetically. and I also recall hearing good words about her from expats who attended a meeting where she presented.

The position of mayor will obviously be taken up by a politician that is a given! However this lady, by gender, appearance and age appears to be a breath of fresh air and possibly at the not-so-evil end of the political spectrum. All politicians are equally evil but some are less equally evil than others, no?

I have noticed that since a certain video allegedly featuring the lady in question became freely available I have heard some negative comments from potential voters but aside from that I tend to avoid politics in my conversations and would not assume to know what the general feeling of the electorate is.

Would you care to enlighten us, Ajarn?

    JxP

  12. I'd prefer an even younger gay guy

I think we all know that already. :)

It's a shame that the ex-mayor is leaving as she certainly seems to have Chiang Mai at the top of her list of priorities and furthering herself as less of one. Unfortunately it is nigh on impossible to filter all the gossip and rumour but it does appear that she made a genuine mistake that has been corrected and will now allow her to run for office again, best of luck to her.

  13. Thanks noise, my post was a real stab in the dark so it's nice to receive a response.

Read this a couple of time and not sure what you are asking for.

I assume your are using the definition of tuition that is "instruction", which not many people remember.

Yes, tuition, tutelage, instruction, teaching . . . I hadn't realised that my vocabulary has become dated, ouch!

And by GIS, do you mean a geographic/geographical information system, one that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that is linked to location?

    Correct.

As I understand GIS, it is a geographic information system which includes mapping software and its application with remote sensing, land surveying, aerial photography, mathematics, photogrammetry, geography, and tools that can be implemented with GIS software.

So you want a week long training in this?

Correct, although location and duration of training are open to suggestions from potential tutors

More specifically, a basic overview of ArcGIS would be ideal but I felt that asking for that from the outset may put off potentially useful sources.

If this clarifies my enquiry and consequently you have information that may help please feel free to PM directly rather than post to the forum if you prefer, many thanks.

    JxP

  14. If you know of a course or tutor providing GIS tuition for beginners I would be very grateful for an email address and/or telephone number (via PM of course).

One week of intensive 1-on-1 tuition in Chiang Mai would be ideal but am open to alternative suggestions.

    Thanks in advance,

    JxP

  15. Sorry no info to offer but I'm interested to know what the definition of a condo is versus that of an apartment, I thought they were both different names for a flat.

    JxP

A condominium is a unit in a block where each unit can be owned by a different person. An apartment is a unit in a block that is owned by 1 person or company and the units are rented out - the units are not for sale. A special type of apartment are the serviced apartments.

    Thanks Tyke.

Sorry for the pathetic attempt to hijack your thread Drew Aitch, good luck with the condo hunting.

  16. :) if you've time...; i'd suggest you wait for next cm ict fair. more often than not you'll find small shops that offer "new" (unused) machines of last year's production cycle. mostly these offers are significantly cheaper (some months ago i got a hp for a friend @ 50% of original price) --- & you'll get benefits of brand-new battery + warranty. dell, eg, has an ecellent warranty policy.

    chok dee na khrap :-)

Do you happen to know when the next ICT Fair is likely to be? I never seem to notice these things until it's too late!
