As long as it is so corrupt, the traffic deaths are so high, and the education system so poor it can never be first world standard. Putting people in jail for 35 years for social media comments does not help either, that's a virtual death sentence for having an opinion.
You forgot to add the stray dogs to your list.... though I must admit all the fancy shopping malls spread over the country are definitely first world.

And it was lucky he didnt hit the water near a jet ski, or they may have claimed for damage to a jet ski.
and the widow would have had to pay for the repair of the jet ski... As Dogmatix said earlier, do not ever engage in any of these activities in Thailand ever, the risk is just too high!

Don't bother, with the money you would be spending on importing that (2nd hand car?) you can buy a new one in Thailand.

Seems there are no ways around this.
Wow, this is dangerous, everything you say and do on there can be taken down as evidence and used against you. It`s like chatting with certain family and friends in your living room and all your other family and friends can watch and listen in to what you are saying.
In future I shall limit my comments on there and be very careful what I say and do on facebook. It can be deadly.
Quit Facebook and be safe!

The BIB, or Thailand's finest, at it again! Never change a trade if you are good at it.

I bought a new laptop computer via ibuyathome.com a while ago. Very smooth process, good prices, very fast delivery.

I really hope not just a few ten thousands of these migrant workers will return to their homelands but hundred thousands of them. Only then will the indigenous populace realise what valuable work these people have been doing that they would never do by themselves. Somnamna....

I'm surprised no one said what's app, by been in Thailand and calling back to the UK the majority have that and line is virtually unknown.
In fact, many have, including myself. WhatsApp works great, I don't really like Line with all this comic crap and as you said it's virtually unknown among people in the West.

The app i have found best in terms of quality and reliability is WhatsApp.
The recipients also need the app on their phone. The App is phone specific and even if you change Sim card (while overseas or a new card here) the app carries on working irrespective of the phone number on the Sim Card.
I have found the same, WhatsApp call quality is really good, comparable to Skype. If you have a Microsoft Office subscription you get 60 minutes per month free to make calls to mobile and landline phone numbers around the world via Skype.

Despite having lived in the realm for over two decades my mind boggles each time I read such stuff

When I was a kid (thru my 40's), we used to try to get away from all those amenities on holiday. Why drive 3 hours from BKK only to spend the weekend in Little Bangkok?
But here it's different: Thais love shopping malls, so they spend their time in them no matter where they are, Bangkok, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket.... I live in Hua Hin and definitely avoid Market Village, etc. during weekends as they are just too crowded with those Bangkok tourists.

Does this tiny, cute machine also stamp passports??? Just wondering....

Curious as to what the difference is between a WP and a legal or very legal WP? I ask as I was usually issued my WP by the One Stop department and it wasn't anything special.

He differentiates between WP's issued by "The Grace of God" and those having obtained an atheist WP.

'Besides, said the cops there is "discretion" from one district to another in how much a speeding motorist has to pay.'
And that's the problem - no structured national fines system like the UK where it is all laid out in black and white exactly what the fine is dependent on the speed, within what limit, etc etc
Nor does there seem to be a points deducted from licence system which is a great incentive so as not to lose your licence,.
licence, what licence???

You may want to consider extending the validity of your driving license(s) should you hold any. Remaining valid for 5 years, this may only be necessary once since you intend to return to Thailand within 7-10 years. You would most likely have to enter on a non-immigrant visa to do so. Maintaining a property in Thailand you should still have a valid address.

Yes, it is 500 Baht for a residence certificate at Hua Hin Immigration. I just was asked to pay this amount yesterday, did not receive a receipt though.....

This actually emphasises a lack of understanding of road safety..."not driving" - that's only part of the story - road safety is concerned with ROAD USERS and the environment which surrounds roads.
To be "safe" you don't just have to "not drive" you have to remove yourself from the roads, pavements roadsides etc completely - so many times people judge road safety from a purely ego-centric point of view - e.g. themselves in a sedan....the reality is that anything on or near a road is at risk from pedestrians to rot ken vendors, workmen even pelpe sitting in a living room.......... until Thailand takes a holistic approach they are all still at risk.
That's what I have promulgated, stay away from any road altogether, my living room should be a fairly safe place, no traffic there, though it may look a bit different in the bedroom

We're not all mindless boozers. Some of us need to get out and about and do our daily business. I can imagine your living room is a beer warehouse! Btw are you Australian?
Good for you mate. You are so much better than many others just because you don't enjoy a drink (once in a while). Instead you are fresh and fit to continue with your daily rate race, even during the holidays. Have fun and stay safe on those wet roads.

How to avoid the carnage? Just don't drive anywhere during the Songkran or any public holidays! Stay at home, turn on the air conditioner, remove a cold one from the refrigerator once in a while and enjoy life.... Cheers.

For what its worth, the truck appears to be out of his lane, i.e. on an angle, and pretty hard to be in that position if your going around a right hand bend, but like the other poster said, case closed, farang fault ?
Of course it's the farang's fault; he is not supposed to be here!
Cruise Control - What's the Point?
in Thailand Motor Discussion
Posted
I use it regularly when driving on highways and if traffic is not too dense. I set it at around 110-120 km/h and if I see an obstacle coming up in front I de-engage cruise control with the respective button, once the road ahead is clear again I push another button that accelerates the car back up to the originally set cruise speed. Doing so, I don't have to use the break and throttle pedals much anymore.
