  1. Hi all

After a great deal of time and effort, I finally found a solution to my problem. All is now in order following the application of an in-place upgrade of Windows using an iso file downloaded from M$. Here's a link to the tutorial I used: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

Unfortunately, I still do not know what was causing my update problem. Possibly a fault on my machine, or something new in the iso file. Anyway, I am now fixed and my machine is running smoothly and fully up to date!

  2. Sorry and of course, you are right. I am on version 1709 build 16299.64. The January release is the one which would not install and has been sitting on my machine, telling me so for a month, in a continuous loop. When the latest release arrived, my machine installed it, leaving the January release in the "available updates"list.

Now, the latest release is on the installed list, but appearing in the "available updates" list too. My build number remains the same.

I have noticed many people complaining they can't fully install KB4074588. It is all very confusing. Apologies for getting it wrong.

  3. Thanks for the suggestion. However, I don't have AVG and my registry contains the key referred to in the AVG thread.

I am worried about this, as the missing update kicks off security patches for Meltdown and Spectre. Without the update I have no protection whatsoever.

  4. I run Win 10 on an Asus s550 laptop, which is now about 3 years old, but which is still running very well. My machine has updated via Windows Updates since new and with no problems whatsoever......until recently. The security update KB4074588 released in early January installs, but at the last second gets rejected and is then unwound to its previous state. I waited for this month's patch Tuesday, expecting a fix, but there isn't one. A neighbour bought a brand new Asus laptop 2 months ago and his machine will not accept the same update either. However, updates issued since KB4074588 have installed successfully on my machine.

Does anyone here have a similar problem and is there a solution? I understand some machines do not have this problem, but many do across various brands.

  5. I am a British expat living in Malaysia and have invited an Indian friend to join me here in Malaysia for a 2 months holiday. I believe my friend will have to make a visa run after 30 days. He would like to visit Thailand.

My question is, can my friend visit Thailand on his Indian passport, by turning up at a border crossing or airport and obtain a visa on arrival? Or does he have to obtain a Tourist Visa before he sets off from India? Maybe the latter can be applied for here, but that's a question I can answer by making local enquiries.

Thanks for any assistance or advice you can provide.

  6. I am thinking of driving to BKK from Malaysia, using my own Malaysia registered car. Has anyone the relevant information on procedures to get the car into los and the likely cost?

I would probably enter los at Bt. Kayu Hitam/Danok and proceed North from there. First, what is the prefered route and is it safe these days? What are the potential pitfalls on such a journey?

Thanks for any advice and information.

  7. I am thinking of having my new desktop built from scratch. I am no expert and would appreciate ideas as to a good spec for general use. I would like a fast, efficient machine, which will last for a few years, so probably pretty high end spec will be necessary. I hear dedicated video memory is desirable.

Recommendations for a good monitor would also be appreciated.

Thanks and a Merry Christmas to all.

  8. I think you will find the taxi fare to Batu Ferringhi is considerably more than RM70 (X10 for THB). The bus used to be OK, but now I believe, it stops everywhere, just like a normal service bus, taking at least 2 hours to BF.

  9. "The stigma behind this is that they are not legally bound and could under future government policies become a dead loss to the owners,

Recently in India this happened to many foreigners and they lost their properties outright due to the fact that they had illegal companies set up."

    ------------

"Even when a lawyer sets up a company for a purchase to take place only 49% of the shareholders can be foreign and 51 % Thai so in theory

a foreigner can only own 49% of his company hence his condo or house."

    ------------

What about the people who own through a Company with Thai shareholders, but where the foreigner also holds signed, undated share transfer forms? Would this be an acceptable way to proceed?

I ask because I am looking at a nice condo in this situation.

  10. I do of course defer to Thai experts here, but by the term "executed correctly" in English means "signed and witnessed" correctly. That validates the document in England & Wales. In my experience a valid English Will is usually recognised by foreign Courts, especially if the Will has been proved (by the issuing of a Grant of Probate) in England.

Interpretation of terms seems to be a danger here. Be careful everyone..........and good luck!

  11. I am a (retired) Will writer with over 25 years experience with a UK firm of Solicitors. To put it simply, if you are a "Western" expat you must make a Will, drawn up by a Western lawyer in English. He will make sure it contains your required provisions and that it is executed correctly. Translations may be necessary after your demise, but the document itself will almost certainly be recognised by foreign Courts.

Of course, nothing is 100% certain, as you are all well aware. This is Thailand after all, but I believe my suggestion is the best course.
