  1. Hi all,

I am leaving my current employer who provided me with a work permit and a connecting non-img visa. I obviously have to give back my work permit in this case. But what will happen to my visa. Is that still valid until the end date or will I lose that as well?

Thanks for your help and advise in this matter.

  2. I have personally never been there as I like the more active places in town. But heard good stories about CU Corner, I think it's moon muang soi 2. It's mentioned only once in this thread. But from what I've heard it's a very mellow easy going place where music loving ppl get together and talk over a glass of red wine.

Places like Hotshot do have bar girls, but they are more often than not there for their private enjoyment rather then hooking up with somebody. It's not an after hours place as I think it closes around 2 as well. Haven't been to Discovery in ages, but last time I was there it was mostly students and the music was very very monotone.

The Fabrique is a bit more hiso, hence to crowded car park. But it's still mostly young ppl indeed, I think it's good fun though and definitely the cleanest and nicest of the mentioned night clubs.

  3. Again and for so many times already:

all this has NOTHING to do with safety, nothing at all. They don't care about your safety for 1 millisecond; it is to extort money from you only, by following the law by just a fraction. Care about your safety would mean they have to change their attitude in thousands of other things and that is NOT going to happen, believe me......

If they care safety, they would wear a helmet by themselves; many don't.

-It is like in BKK; when you drop a cigarette-bud on the street, they will fine you 2.000 Baht or 500 for themselves. You think they care about a clean city when you see the dirt 1 meter away from were you dropped your cigarette?

-Now again with the elephants; they will charge the tourist up to 10.000 Baht for feeding them. They law is that the elephants cannot enter they city at first. The so called "mahouts" pay. You think they care about the animals?

-When a special brigade had to come from BKK to shut down many brothels in CM with underage kids, ran by them; do you really think they care about those kids?

-When you see all the shops with piracy cd's. I noticed when they pass they look at the other side. Why? You think they care about piracy?

-When they kill people, and there are thousands of examples of it. The worst case scenario for them is to get transferred to an area where they cannot extort money anymore (too poor). Do you really think they care about the victims?

The list is longer than this board can handle.

There are hundred of thousands examples of them how they behave in every aspect of society.

If you are honest to yourself, try to get some info on the net, in the papers, or listen to people who were very close to observ the way they handle things here.

You will see, they have NO good intentions; not to assist you, not to help you. They only thing they want is money. They not have the same attitude as in the western world.

Short; if you like to do a test about safety with them. Wear a construction-helmet, those plastic things. You will pass.

    Aren't you a glass half empty huh.gif

  4. Thxn for the quick reply, it is indeed a CRT TV. How much would a fix cost? Cause it's a 3000 baht TV, and I wanted to buy a new one anyway, timing is not perfect but don't feel like spending much on the old one, already taking it out on the motorbike to get it fixed is something I am not looking forward to.

  5. I haven't been able to pay a fine on the spot for over 2 years. My cute GF was, 2 months ago. (But I had to promise the officer to give the money back to her :P)

I have been fined 500,400 and 200 baht for not wearing a helmet. I always ended up paying 200 baht at the station, except this time I brought a very cute girl with me who sweet-mouthed to the officer and the fine became 100 baht.

They never made a big deal of me not having an ID, or licence. They once accepted my Dutch student free transport card as ID. That time I jumped the red lights (not knowing, tuk tuk in front of me drove off, I figured it's green :) We both got a fine) while not wearing any helmet. They never spoke a word about the helmet.

I think Thai police, get send out with a plan like ' today u check for helmet' so they don't mind u jump the redlight. ' Today u check for ppl jumping the lights' so they don't care about helmets or IDs.

Final word of advice, i found the police to be very active on those cool mornings when the sun is behind the clouds, those nice cool mornings, I will always wear a helmet then. Today it's kinda hot and sunny day, I am pretty sure they are not active now.

  6. I havent been able to pay my no helmet tickets to the officer for over 2 years. So i used to make regular trips to the station to pay my fine. The fine changed from time to time between 500, 400 and 200 baht. True that bringing a cute thai girl can help to bring the price down. I once went there on the way to a nice dinner with a lovely girl and cause of here the fine was only 100 baht.

Be aware on mornings when the sun is not up and about from 7 o clock, those mornings when it's still very pleasant outside and not hot at all... That's when they are all over town. I were my helmet about 50% of the time, but since I discovered that it has to do with the weather, i never had a single ticket anymore.

  7. I'm currently watching TV on a 7 months old small LG TV, old fashioned one. No widescreen, LCD, Plasma or anything. This morning I turned on the tv, and all around the edges of the screen the colors are wrong, it all looks blue around the edges. Tried unplugging the tv and plugging it back in again. Opened the DVD player to check if the problem was not in the cable. But it's definitely the TV. I am living in a house with kinda crappy electricity boxes, and somehow wonder if this could somehow cause this problem.<div><br></div><div>But the important 2 questions are. Is this temporary or irreversible? Bringing the TV back on warranty is no option. It was a cheap TV anyways. But I was kinda saving up to buy a proper Full HDTV  in a few months, so it would kinda suck if this one would be out of the running after such a short time.</div><div><br></div><div>Any recommendations are greatly appreciated </div>

  8. Was up in Pai and Mae Hong Son 2 weeks ago. Very dry there. But first things first... EDUCATION. In my Moo baan I see everybody clean there porch, or place in front of their house, and the street in front of their house, twice a day, with water. Simply too lazy to remove the dust and old leaves with a broom it seems. So lets say they easily use 50 liters of water a day (morning and evening together). Calculate that for say 25% of Chiang Mai's houses...per year. And there goes your water for agriculture. Yes planning and development of waterusage, irrigation, etc has to be done for the future, yes they are late. But a quick result could be gained from educating the people. I think many people simply don't realize how much they waste.

  9. It is so hard to say. I think a degree in general doesn't mean as much here as in western world where a degree = a degree.

In Thailand you have to ask follow-up questions. What's your degree? And also very important, from which University did you get it. And next question is, where are you looking for a job?

Bangkok will generally pay a lot more then CM, which is still better then what the same degree will give you in Khon Kaen or Udon.

There are lots of people with some basic Bachelor in administration or whatever, that they get no more then 5k-8k month where ever they work. My GF studied Graphic Design in a good BKK university and made 20k+ a month back in BKK. Here in CM, it's hard to find a job (still looking whistling.gifjap.gif) but from what we've heard she will be looking at less then half that salary here in CM which doesn't really get her motivated to search harder unsure.gif.

So if you wanna make money, choose your study and University very carefully.

  10. sao jiang mai.

re .... I am looking to find .... thai ? ....people with really odd jobs in Chiang Mai.

one of the strangest jobs ive seen thais do here was these two women washing and cleaning EVERY

buddha image , elephant ,china doll , pot , etc and the spirit house outside a bank near chiang mai gate.

they had a motorsai and sidecar full of steps , cleaning stuff , water bottles etc ready for the next one...... strange job : )

Love your pictures man laugh.gif. u seem to have pictures of really everything in CM

  11. I think, generally, the area around CMU/Huay Kaew road is quite expensive and in some cases very overpriced. There are some nice new condos around airport plaza, which def. is the number 1 shopping mall in CM at this moment. It's also a good location cause of the highways crossing. There are some bargain prices in condos if you drive around the city and check the non-tourist locations. I've seen very nice 3-4 story buildings with nice 35-40 m2 rooms for 3500-4000 baht a month. I've even seen 90m2 for 6000 (kinda old, hardly any furniture) near the train station.

If you wanna stay here longer then 3 months, I defiantly recommend renting a motor bike and drive around. There are so many rooms available in CM. Drive up to any building you see and just walk in, ask to see a room. I've checked rooms in over 20 buildings, and only 1 building had no rooms available (Felt like they didn't want farang, or that it was a student only building which they couldn't explain in English). There are seriously OK, basic aircon rooms around for 3500-4000 baht. there are generally NICE, 40+ m2 rooms around for less 8000 baht.

  12. Me being a fan of Holliday Inn sunday brunch. What other places can you recommend me. I'm not Brittish so not looking for those pub style mashed patatoes, but more the extensive buffets in that price class. Will try Amari Rincone as mentioned by others.

  13. Checked out the site of that Loft place. Looks nice, prices are ok for rent. But then I read they will charge 8 baht per unit. It's stuff like that that pisses me off, and would be a clear reason not to move there. Normal rates are 3 or 4 baht or whatever per unit, depending on how much you use. There is no reason to charge double that to customers. I stayed in a 50 m2 serviced appartment earlier, they charged 7 baht per unit. And my studio without kitchen easily produced a higher electric bill then the rented house with kitchen and 2 aircons that I use now. With a few hours of aircon a day, tv, computer, you will be easily looking at 2000+ (3000+ in hot season) electric bill a month in these places.

If you wanna stay cheap. Drive around and ask some guesthouses. Some give incredibly good rates. Surely most of them are not european style, but with electric included it's ur cheapest bet.

On the outskirts of Chiang Mai, there are some Thai appartment places where you get quite decent rooms for 3500 baht a month. Wish I could explain you how to get there but there are many, so better drive around on your bike and keep asking and looking.

    Good luck
