Where in the United States was this guy from? It is a pretty big country with 50 states and there is often a big difference in people in different regions of the U.S.

Most rudeness comes from Americans on the West Coast - Oregon, Washington, Calif - and the East Coast - NY, Mass., N.J., etc. Not saying the guy was rude - no way of knowing - just mentioning it because so many posters in Thai Visa talk about loud, rude, Americans but usually never met an American that was not from the West or East coasts of the country. People in the South are generally kind, considerate and not rude. Quite different from Northeasterners who more often visit Thailand and spread bad will for all Americans around the world.

Talk about generalizing! This is like domestic geographic discrimination...shall we call it place-ism instead of racism!

I was in Pattaya last month and it was absolutely dead, literally everywhere i went i was getting hassled like never before in LOS off street vendors, massage girls, suit sellers, bar girls, motorbike taxi guys etc etc..... They were a lot ruder then when the place is full and it did get to be a bit of a pain in the ass ...... Still id much rather be in LOS then anywhere else.

I like to travel out and away from the tourist spots and I am often alone since I like to walk and walk and walk and walk. I have walked myself into some bad situations.... I met a pack of dogs that still send a shiver down my spine when I think of them. Faced down guys with pipes in their hands who mistook me for someone else and offered a chance to be in a porn movei... Well... Maybe the offer of being in a porno was not so bad

So while things are lean I think it would be better for me to vist when things get a little better and folks are there spending their money and I won't be seen as such an eaxy target.

In a crowd of tourist, my chances of not being a victim are much better....

actually it goes back alot further than that to the 19th century when chinese and japanese immigrants to the US to work on railroads caused the whole "yellow peril" panic in the US resulting in stricter laws....

This is the Pattaya section. The massage shop is in Pattaya between Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buckhaw. Soi Drarin is also known as Soi Xzyte.

The easiest way to find it, is to take a baht bus from either Pattaya Klang or Pattaya Tai along Soi Buckhaw and alight at the 'Oasis' Go-Go bar next to Witherspoons pub. From there walk up Soi Xzyte/Drarin 185 yards and you will see the bowling green on your left and just a further 22 yards further on, on the left 'Jits Massage'. Enjoy!

Funny too much! Try telling that story line to the good residents of London, Boston, Munich, Melbourne, Paris and wherever when their fair cities are over run by impoverished and destitute Issan farmers, Cambodian paddy workers, Laos laborers, Philippine taxi drivers etc, and so on.

Idealistic views aside, in fact it is the western countires who started the most restrictive policies so as not to be overrun by imports from developing countries...imagine a billion people arriving on your doorstep and demanding free healthcare, education, citizenship etc! the result would be massive unemployment, a collapse of social institutions and anarchy...

They need to think out of the box.

Maybe they could put ATM's at the consulates and charge farang mandatory 150 baht(local currency equivalent of course) to use them...or charge an admission fee for the privilege of entering the premises.....

I don't wish to be alarmist, but I have just been made aware of the fact that there is a serious public health threat in Thailand which some old-timers may be aware of, but many others will not.

Do not eat eat raw or undercooked fish in Thailand, particularly in the North-East, as there is a serious issue with liver flukes there. If left untreated, you can develop cancer of the bile duct or liver, and even if you have been infected and treated, the risk of cancer is not lessened. And if it turns to cancer, the 5 year survival rate is 0% unless ALL tumors are cut out of bile duct and liver. The fluke is named Opisthorchis viverrini and is endemic in the North-East. In fact it is estimated that up to 50% of the population there is infected, as the people there eat raw/undercooked fish as part of their culture. As snails are also part of the life-cycle, do not eat uncooked water cress either.

I'm really surprised, and heartened, here by the majority sentiment of the comments.

For years, of all the somewhat dubious quality Thai beers, I've always liked Leo beer the best. And it's strange, because it tends to be the cheapest of the Thai-brewed beers routinely available in BKK -- compared to Singha, Chang, Tiger and Heineken..

I've had and enjoyed beers from all over the world, and tend to like beers for day-to-day drinking with a fresh, clean taste... Like Asahi, San Miguel, Ching Dao, etc etc... (when I'm not falling off the wagon and drinking darkie Guinness )

And now this thread comes along, and I see so many other farangs opining that they like Leo pretty much the best among the Thai beer choices... And I thought I was alone about that... (As an aside, when I walk around the streets these days in BKK, I also overwhelmingly see working-class Thais drinking Leo as well, though I suspect that's more a choice driven by price).

But it leaves me wondering: What are the Thais doing in the brewing of Leo that seems to give it a different taste and make it somewhat less injurious to one's body the next day???

I will have to give Leo a try, as I was always scared off by the cheap price in the past, which I thought probably meant even more chemicals.

One newer local beer which seems drinkable is Federbrau which they are claiming meets the Bavarian Purity Law criteria, although I would be interested to know if this is really true. So far the taste and hangover factors seem better than other Thai beers(and any foreign beer brands brewed in Thailand under license)

In the meantime, i am gonna get back to finishing off this case of Beer Lao, all this typing has made me thirsty....

Friend of mine claims that :

-Beer Lao was originally brewed by Czechs under Ruskie supervision in Lao with no additives and 30 day natural fermentation.

-Thai beer purportedly contains 30 per cent rice(mandated by government to increase Thai rice sales in country) and many additives to accelerate fermentation to 3 days. He cites Heineken in Malaysia as an example, as the taste and hangover is completely different(ie. better) than the Heineken of Thailand.

Any brew-experts here who know the truth?

All I know is I can drink tons of beer Lao without hangover and a couple bottles of any beer from thailand gives me a nasty headache.

Can anyone please tell me the requirements for my Indian friend to get the 15 day VOA such as what documents, evidence, cash, interviews etc are required and how long it takes. I have seen the area myself but have never used it. Thanks for help.

Interesting how my initial rant on this place has turned into a concern about the structure...while I do now find some positives about the place, I still think it will have trouble surviving commerically.

I wouldn't expect the ambulance chaser Pattaya english media types to do any stories on this as they are not known for investigative journalism(maybe no budget?)

Re the structure, Thailand has a history of building collapses, including I believe a shopping complex up in Sri Racha a few years back for which an engineer faced some criminal charges...I am too lazy to google the actual case, maybe some other kind soul can find it..

There have also be building collapses during construction, usually during cement pouring like the one in Bangkok 2 weeks ago and in Pattaya park around 6 months ago.

If this building is unsound it can be for several reasons

-Improper structural design and load calculations

-Modifications to the original structure which affect and therefore invalidate the original calculations

-Inferior materials not to spec

-Poor workmanship and sub-contractors cutting corners to save money(in Korea some builders put telephone books in columns rather than concrete to save cash)

-Lack of construction supervision

-Unforeseen Seismic event

etcetc

What is most important to know is

-Who designed the place

-Which engineering firm signed off on the design

-who was the main contractor and accepted the works

Maybe they could provide answers to all questions

The rest is all speculation by we laymen...
