  1. I like the little Indian restaurant opposite the Imperial Mae Ping hotel, on the road that connects Sri Dornchai with Loi Kroh Road. I usually get to it by heading down Sri Dornchai road from the South East corner of the moat, passing the side of the Imperial Mae Ping hotel on my left, then turning immediately at the "demolition derby" crossroads (with no lights or any form of traffic control!). The restaurant is then a short way along this road on your right.

I have no idea what it's called, and the decor is not great (clean but ugly) but the food is very reasonably priced and really rather good. I prefer to sit on the one outside table and watch the world go by (whilst avoiding the ugly interior!). My favourite dish is their Matter Paneer (Indian cheese and peas) - lovely.

If you need to refer to a map look here: http://findercm.com/maplower.html

Thanks very much for your input, Jim Shorts. I will try the restaurant that you recommended.
  3. I think that Chiang Mai is a foodie heaven and I think that the restaurants in Chiang Mai are the best in Thailand.

I love Indian food and the best that I discovered is: New Delhi Indian Foods on Ratchawithee Road (next to the Irish Pub). They buy all their herbs and spices from India and their chefs are from Delhi.

I wish to hear from you if you are able to recommend other Indian restaurants.

    Thanks

  4. Quite simple. Express train to Paiyatai One way BHT90 Return Bht150 ( return open for 14 days)Swampi to Paiyatai takes only 17minutes. At Paiyatai check price for your destination.Max price Bht55. You will need to change train at Siam onto Silom line.

BTS PT to BTS Surasak will be 30 baht. (Note the BTS train change at Siam means just crossing the platform to the other side, Wong Wian Yai direction train)

Also, Cityline option to PhayaThai station is 45 baht if you want to half the Express fare and nearly double your journey time (26 mins)

ARL and BTS is the quickest option and will get you there before 9am easily. You don't state that your arrival is international but I am assuming it. Immigration is good at 7:30am , you'll clear quick.

Weekday timetables for Express and Cityline so you can note times a few options for when you land:

    Thanks

  6. usually all these well-intended directions give people more nerves- its really plain simple; FOLLOW SIGNS-open eyes.

As for BKK and your original Q; in BKK it does not make any sense to ask about closest by-in this fact a taxi ride to that one would add enormous to time needed as due to the jams.

    Thanks very much
  7. By the way: It is on B-floor. Take the lift down... Walking is a long way :-) I did it yesterday to Silom... 45 Bath to Phaya Thai + 25 Bath to Sala Daeng S2 [you have to change the line. Just opposite to the arrival line is the silom line.] Security is very helpful for people with luggage or disorientation...

Thanks, Aachen> If I may repeat because I am uncertain as to what I should do.

Take the lift down to the B floor. What kind of bus or shuttle do I take Phaya Thai? Cost is 45 baht. Then I will be getting down at Phaya Thai BTS. From there, I take the BTS Sukhumvit Line to Sala Daeng at 25 baht. Another Forum member said that I have to go to Siam station and then take the BTS Silom Line. Is it Sala Daeng or Siam station. Now I take the BTS Silom to Surasak.

Sorry for the bother. I am kind of slow to comprehend. Thanks

  8. I will arrive at SWAMPY around 7.30AM. I need to get to the closest BTS station in order that I may get to the BTS - Surasak Station (near the Myanmar Visa Office) by 9 AM.

    Please advise me:

    1) Do I need to get a taxi from Swampy to the closest BTS station - what is the name of that station

    2) From that BTS station near SWAMPY - could I go directly to Surasak BTS station or do I have to make any transfers?

    Thanks for your help.

    James

  9. I think they have recently started an online application process which approves your visa, gives you a number or emailed form which you hand over at the border and heh presto you get visa.

    Thanks very much. James
  10. I wish to go to Yangon for 3 days in September. I need your advice on the following:

Could I get a tourist visa from the BKK - Myanmar Consulate on the same day if I pay any extra charges. I am a US citizen. If I can not get the tourist visa on the same day - how long will it take.

I am checking airline prices - is Air Asia the best fare from BKK - RGN - BKK or is it Myanmar Airways.

    Thanks a lot

    James

  11. I just checked out Bangkok to Seattle on cheap flights and matrix.itasoftware.com. They both came out to 94,000 baht for the same days and the same class of travel. And they both used EVA Air.

I then checked with EVA air on line and the price was 61,000 baht for the same dates and class of travel.

    Thanks
  12. If I were you, and travelling internationally quite often, I would first check on matrix.itasoftware.com website first to find the best day of a particular month cost wise and then compare the price you find on line with the price that the local travel agents will quote you. You may be quite surprised in the difference of prices on the same flights!!!

Thanks very much for your counsel. I do check on other travel web-sites. But, not on Matrix. Thanks again

Check with a travel agent also. They are aware of things that are not always on line.

Don't know of any one in your area but I am sure there are several qualified agents there. Must be some other travelers in your area with experience.

Just be sure to check them against on line. I once had it all priced out on line and when I checked in with a travel agent they got me the low season price in the high season. Worked out great I got to go when I wanted to. Another time My travel agent got me cheaper prices than Air Asia on line prices. And they were with a real air line Singapore Air.

    Thanks very much

  14. Thanks uptheos for your suggestions.

Which one would you use - Travelshoppe or P & P Travel?

    Thanks in advance

    James

    Both are pretty good.

Personally, I like dealing with Khun Praneet, but Khun Pidet is a good man.

However, now I mostly I book on-line with the airline

    Thanks again
  15. I am new to Chiang Mai. Presently living in the Nimmankemin area.

I am a frequent traveller within Thailand and overseas.

I wish to find an experienced travel agency/travel agent that speaks English in the Nimmankemin area.

    Kindly send me your recommendations

    Thanks

    James

  16. I lived in BKK since January 2010. I moved to Chiang Mai in January 2012.

I live in the Nimmankemin area of Chiang Mai.

I need a dentist in the Nimmankemin area, English speaking and preferably Western trained or from a prestigous University in Thailand

    Thank you

  17. Dear Forum:

You have helped me before and I hope you will advise me now.

Since January 2010, I rented a condo at PST City Homes in the Param Saam / Sathu Pradit area. The first six months I paid my rent in full. It was 18,000 baht a month. The rent was reduced to 13,000 baht and was renewed for one year. My lease expired in December 2011. The owner wants her property back/ move into her place and asked me to vacate the premises in December 2011. I was in the USA until January 2012 and she agreed to wait until the end of January 2012.

I had 2 months deposit 13,000 baht times 2. She agreed not to receive her rent for January 2012. She still had the balance 13,000 baht deposit with her. My goods are being shipped to Chiang Mai, (that is going to be my new home) tomorrow, January 26th, including my computer. So I am without my internet until January 31st when my goods reach me.

After inspecting the property this morning by the Owner, the only damage to the property was some nail holes that were used to hang my pictures. About 15 holes. I expected to pay for the repair/paint touch up of these holes (like it is done in the USA). She said that the paint on the walls is a special paint. She refuses to refund any part of the deposit. She said that the whole unit has to be painted and that 13,000 baht is insufficient. I said that I am responsible for the nail holes damage but not painting the whole unit. However I was willing to pay for the painting of the whole unit under duress. I got a painter to give me a bid and he quoted 10,000 baht. for the whole job. My owner is still not showing any acceptance. She wants to keep the full 13,000 baht. I am willing to pay at least 8,000 baht. I need this deposit money for my new deposit in Chiang mai.

I have little time before I leave for Chiang mai. My goods go on January 26th. I get to Chiang mai on January 31st. I would like to get an attorney and fire off a letter to the owner to arrive at a reasonable conclusion.

Do any of you kind folks have any advice/counsel for me. Please respond ASAP

    Thanks very much

    James Peiris
