  1. I have a Thai Male friend who married his very loving American wife and is now living in Los Angeles.  He called me one day and complained about how his wife would sit higher than him (he was on the floor watching TV and his wife sat down on the sofa behind him),  make him do laundry or cook for himself etc.  I personally think that he is lucky to have her, but Thai men are not to be contradicted (poor babies  :D )

    :D

    totster :D

Yeah, getting a bit too obvious now...

Maybe a more appropriate nickname would be T&ROLL... :o

    :D :D

(Seem to be following you around Jai Dee :D )

Really T&R we are horrible people. We laugh which is of course forbidden. We enjoy life which is forbidden. We laugh at others and laugh at ourselves, which is forbidden.

We are disgusting and you should of course shunn us.

  2. I think it is a very "selfish" move to relocate your daughter all the way to Phuket.  I am sorry but I just think it is. What is the reason for moving to Phuket now?  For a Thai woman? Work?  If it is, get your company to pay for her schooling!!!

    I absolutely agree with JoJo.

I can conceive of no sensible reason why a caring Parent would uproot their child and try to integrate her into such a difficult environment - particularly at such a sensitive age.

And ignore "New Age" nonsense such as "there are alot of positive aspects of Asian culture when you compare it to our self centred one".

Living your life for your kids only is absurd. I uprooted my daughters from Japan where they were born and brought them to America, this shortly after their mother died.

They are A students, have friends and would love to leave America now.

We have discussed a number of different countries, we had planned to move to Thailand Phuket in fact.

There is a Catholic School over on the land side of the island a bit south of the "international school".

I would NEVER send my kid to an international school anywhere in the world. They are generally filled with the most pretentious brats. The catholic school seemed very nice, no pushing religion, teach in English and Thai.

I think taking your kids out of one culture and letting them see another culture is a great idea. My daughters have been al over the world and make friends easily now because of this.

I think it is total BS to worry about kids or think because she is 14 she needs to be pampered. Folks life in general sucks because you DECIDE it sucks, not that it actually does.

    I vote for the move

  3. After landing, the aircraft was thoroughly checked and it was found that one of its windshield on the right side of the pilot's cabin was damaged.

    --Agencies 2005-05-22

Sounds like a bird strike - outside of pilot's or airline's control - and surprisingly common.

Clearly a terrorist bird. If it were on a list, it would not be allowed in the air.

Are we getting just a bit crazy here?

  4. When I flew on North West Airlines from the U.S. to Japan there was a steady stream of fuel pouring out of the end of the wing - many, many gallons.  The pilot said it was normal and that heat expansion from sitting on the ground for too long was causing them to discard fuel.

How routine are large fuel discharges like that?

Very common. Fuel expands rapidly when heated. would you rather some fuel leak out, or have the wing explode due to excessive internal pressures.

Too bad they don't teach basic science anymore.

  5. One in three of 330 women ??????

96% having married men from Switzerland???

    Pardon?

I married a Thai girl from a N.E. Thai village called Lak Chat near Nam Pong which is about 50 miles from Khon Kaen.

There's only 1 other falang in her village of some 200+ women.

In the entire area of Nam Pong (pop. 25000+ ) I doubt if there's 10 falangs.

We shop in Khon Kaen's (Thailand's 3rd largest city by population 1.7m)  biggest supermarket Big C twice a week.

I've never seen more than 3 falangs in the place.

..................and yet this report claims over 100 women from a small village are all married to Swiss citizens?

As a widower, I met a Thai woman who was married to an American. She spent about 2 years trying to hook me up with different girls from her village. Asian cultures are far more "pack" like and social than especially Americans.

So the fact that is one village had a 96% rate to Swiss, would not suprise me. I think it would be interesting to study further the dynamics of how it happened.

If you read the article carefully, these swiss were not STAYING in Thailand but apparently taking their brides back home.

I could see further reasons in that the Swiss men would recommen to their friends and Thai women would recommend to Their frineds in hopes to build a small enclave of Thai society in Switzerland.

  6. I have a little trouble understanding how anything as biased as this report can be called a "study".  It's interesting on what seems to be a slow news day, but it lacks anything that would remotely qualify it as a study.

What exactly was biased in the study? Seems she went and gathered some facts and talked to people about what happened form a vareity of points of views.

I did not see anthing particaularly biased in what I read, but sounds like YOU might be carrying around a bit.

  7. So why the complicated story:  My girlfriend wants me to accept her sister-in-law and children in my home.  While she's working she will pay the women to clean my house and provide wifely service to me.  She thinks we can be a big happy family and I'm worried that relationship problems will mess up the works.  :o

I love children so no problem here, the problem is having two women together.  I only need to accidently indicate something was good from the sister-in-law and I have problems with my wife.  :D

Well I know Muslim religion is not being seen in a very good light, but the fact is Mohammed and even the ancient Christians, state clearly it is your DUTY to accept you dead brother's wife as your own and his children as well.

I think if you find you have problems with them fighting, a simple solution is to bind their arms from wrist to shoulder to each other, Give them both a severe spanking and leave them for 24 hours tied like that.

Having to sleep and go to the toilet while tied like this would make them understand the need to cooperate. And would forge a better bond better them.

Now you would need to have a strong enough personality to do this without anger on your part and strength of personality to make them accept this is a fair thing to do.

I am sure the nice nice nazis who think everyone must be sooo nice will be up in arms at what I have written here, but I find it works.

    Just a thought for you.

As to women marry to have a better life, this has only been going on for 100,000 years or so. I would recommend people who were raised in more well to do societies take a look back and see but a few generations ago, your ancestors were doing exactly the same thing.

Most of us in life are trying to get by.

  8. Er... Mossies usually bite the feet and ankles because they are attracted to the sweaty feet smell.

Are there any announcements for heavy socks? Mossies attack the feet for three simple reasons. First, feet are far from the hands which wack, this survival skill in deep in the genetic code of the mossies who survive.

Two, feet are closer to the damp earth and wet grass where the mossies are sitting waiting for a nice ankle to come by.

And three, the ankle tends to have blood vessels very close to the surface of the skin.

I am sure these reports however are completely true. Why ask any doctor who gets these diseases and it is likely 99% girls with spaghetti straps! roflmao

Now eating Brewers yeast does make you less tasty. Sorry boys "drinking" things made from Brewer's Yeast gets defeated by the alcohol, which is a vaso-dialatore and a form of sugar which make mossies say Yuuuummmm

  9. My Gf like most thais cannot say words starting with the letter "r".

Loom, load, lat, lound you get my drift.

no matter how many times i try and make her say "RRRRRRRRRR" "r" it always comes out "LLLLLLLL" "L"

    Why?????

    :D  :D  :o

This is common in China, Japan and Thais and has to do with the soft tongue. This is also why your pronunciation of some words in Thai sound so weird.

It is not about the tongue. Adopted Asians raised in Western countries learn to distinguish between L and R sounds just like the rest of us if they come early enough. (The older you get, the harder it is to readjust your inner catalogue of phonemes (the sounds that make up words).

Sorry I was meaning the habitual use of the tongue, when I was saying soft tongue. English is a very tongue flapping-mouth moving language. Chinese and Japanese do not move lips as much.

Southern Chine3se have an easier time with some English sounds because they move their mouths more than Mandarin speakers.

Thais seems to move their lips and mouth qite a bit, but when I listen to the sounds, I sense they do not use a "hard" tongue, but one which is relaxed and soft.

    Absolutely love the Look up.

My wife used to call my Swiss army knife a Sesame knife. Which is how we say it now in our house just for fun.

  10. My Gf like most thais cannot say words starting with the letter "r".

Loom, load, lat, lound you get my drift.

no matter how many times i try and make her say "RRRRRRRRRR" "r" it always comes out "LLLLLLLL" "L"

    but ive almost cracked it.

She can say "errr" so i make her say "err - oom"

she keeps repeating it, putting the 2 together getting faster and faster until it comes out perfect!

"well done" i say, "now say it again"

    "loom"

    Why?????

    :D  :D  :o

This is common in China, Japan and Thais and has to do with the soft tongue. This is also why your pronunciation of some words in Thai sound so weird.

Rather than think of R use a "swallowed Ah" and tell her to hold the tip of her tongue down.

There is a famous and funny book in Japan called "Is that R as in London? No, it is L as in Rome." In which the person actually then got the spelling correct!

  11. Many years ago some blacks came out of the woods in Bermuda and killed about 8 tourists. Government hunted them down and executed them as quick as lightning.

But everyone thought there was some black rebellion going on. So hotels were empty. 12 friends and I booked Presidential suites 3 or them for $50 a night these were four bedroom suites and there was more staff than guests.

As I said in a different thread.

Pack chlorine bleach crystals and if you can find all the medicine you can bring and buy everything else there. Get a portable water filter and some tablets, but go spend some money in the hard hit areas, they will need all the cash you can leave and I guarantee, you will get amazing service.

Things will calm down quicker than you imagine. and really they need your money and they need your moral support.

Red Cross is nice, but seeing people come and spend money will help them emotionally

  12. Here is a press release from the Pacific Asia Travel Assn. It was issued just a day after the tsunami struck. I understand the need to protect the tourist industryand cancelling holidays will only to the pain of local merchants....still given that this appears to be the worst natural disaster in a century, I think this is a little too quick to be issuing "business as normal" statements. The wording is rather unfortunate too. That's my view.  -ThaiGene.

Are you recommending they issue a warning to tell all the money which will not be a drop in the bucket, compared to what is needed, all stay home?

I would advise anyone thinking of taking a vacation to take it in Thailand, leave ALL your clothes at home, pack two suitcases filled with chlorine beach crystals pack a carry on bag of food with as much dense nutrients as possible, break the laws on how much money you can transport out of the country and go to Thailand.

Give your suitcases and carry=on to the relief people at the airport and go shopping for clothes.

Contact people on this site who know the area and know some people and take ONE family or Two under your wing and put them on your feet.

    Make a difference.

    Go to Thailand NOW

  13. Age 15 and 12. What future do you offer them?

It is nice for you to retire but in my humble opinion you can only do so , after the children have finished their education and do have a reasonable chance on a independant life.

They were born in Japan and have been to Thailand. We moved from Japan when my wife died

we moved to the US where we have been living for 4 years.

We live in Georgia which is not bad but, the drool is off the pie and we are ready to move back to the orient.

I gave them 4 choices which were Japan easiest because we have family there, but comes with major pressure in school, China which would be valuable to them since this will be the next great economy and power. They are half Japanese and quite stunningly attractive

Next choice was Indonesia where we have been as well and Thailand

    Thailand won the vote.

No we do not read or speak Thai, but I have the impression Thai people managed to learn and my daughters will learn as well.

The school we looked at years ago taught in both Thai and English and had quite a few foreign kids in it. The International School was somewhere in the 20 to 30K USD for the two kids and overrated as best I could tell. I also find the spoiled little sh!ts who go to them are just the type of people who could make Thailand a horrible experience.

I prefer they go to regular schools and mix with regular people and learn the culture. The Catholic school seemed quite nice and the nuns spoke English.

So I appreciate your concerns about them. We actually have quite a good relationship. I have been staying at home for the last 5 years, after their mother died. I do the papa job quite well.

So does anyone have any recommendations of where to look to live on the Phuket City side of the island? near a beach ( requirement for all of us)

    thanks

  14. One day we talked about terrorists and all the nastiness in the middle east for a bit.  After that, we spoke about her visa for a while.

Then, she asked me if there are 'tourists' in thailand.

    me:  'yes, lots of them.'

    snip

she had a tough time pronouncing 'terrorists'.

When living in Japan, my wife's motehr called to say she had bought a Somen bachi which is a bowl to eat somen ( a cold noddle) from.

I could not hear her clearly and thought she said Shoben bachi.

    Now shoben is a toilet.

My wife and her mother almost wet their pants laughing at me.

  15. I am a 54 year old American widower with 2 daughters ages 15 and 12. They have both US and Japanese passports.

If I deposit 800K in a Thai bank and have funds to live, would my children be able to piggyback on my retirement visa?

We are planning for a quiet beach on Phuket. We looked at a Catholic school someplace near Phuket City for their school. I am a teacher and writer, so I can supplement their education.

would $2500USD a month about 97,000bhat be enough to live a simple lifestyle? WE tend to eat local foods. I cook and don't need many imported foods. I assume things like soy sauce, teryaki sauce in commerical quanities are availble.

    Thanks

  16. When will they learn that people that have money do not squader it.  If they did, then they would not be rich would they?  The rich want isolation, clean beaches, top services.  I do not see such services being prevelant in Pattaya.  Never been to Phuket.

Let us suppose that the goal of getting the rich clients here succeeds.  Who will benefit?  I suppose only a elite few that can effectively cater to this group.  I do not see benefits for the masses, unless they all want to become chambermaids and waiters.

    :o

Rich people are happy to squander money on themselves. They do it in resorts the world over. Some even go to Thailand and do it.

All the governement is trying to do is upgrade the level of buyers. Take a look at Gallo wine in the US as an example. They started with Thunderbird Wine which was cheap Port cut with Vitamin C and sold to the poorest blacks and winos.

Over the years, Gallo reached a level of sales at 100 million cases and decided selling MORE wine was not the way to go. It sold the Thunderbird brand and introduce Hearty Burgandy a very good very inexpensive wine. Over the years its cheaper brands were phased out as they introduced more upscale wines. They roughly held at 100 million cases but increased their revenues 100 fold.

The idea only a few will benefit is BS. Yes of course the richer more connected people will get more money. They get more of the backpackers money and more of the low end tourists money.

If for example Thailand get 20 billion dollars in tourist income now on 14 million people and it can get 100 billion on the same 14 million by upgrading its tourist to a higher end client, you think Thailand does not have more money? Go back to the second grade and study math.

Now the fact will remain the poor in this situation will be poorer. This is true the world over. Look at China where now you have huge numbers of mllionaires compared to 20 years ago. The poorest people are not getting this New Wealth and are in fact poorer, but China over al is richer.

Governments do not care about the poor. That is lip service; not dissimilar to those of you, myself included who promised undying love if we could just ( no, I'll only put it in a little)!

They need the poor and ignorant, because you can get far more money and power exploiting the poor than you can the rich.

Rich people do not squander money on politicians, they invest in them and expect a return on investment.

Ask a poor person and they will tell you they are helpless against the politicians.

Rich people just smile and change the subject.

  17. I go with legalize all drugs. Making laws did not stop people from taking the drug alcohol in the 1920's and actually Organized the theretofor unorganized crime.

Opiate use in the US has remained steady.

We still have people dying from alcohol. If they want to die from something else, let them.

Making the drugs illegal on makes the drugs more expensive. This increases the likelyhood they are going to break into your house or mug you.

Means we need less police, less prisons and less property crime.

You are never going to legislate morality.

These are crimes without victims, unless you want to count the families, who need to bring massive pressure on the INDIVIDUAL just the way it is done with alcoholic intervention.

Legalize them, tax them and let people who want them have them.

  18. pretty much all transoceanic flights are on two engine planes now as the older planes are being phased out. Planes have gotten more reliable. However, stuff falls off them all the time.

There is a man near JFK in NY who has this huge collection of things he has picked up. This only made the news because the part hit a car.

Notice it didn't crash. Notice it landed fine loaded with fuel, though some of that might have been dumped as well.

Your chances of dying going to and from the airport is much higher, but no where near as sensational a news story.

  19. I find it fascinating how the Puritian ethic has spread across the world. Pleasure and feeling good are bad, apparently.

If one wants to look at a failed drug problem, one only needs to look at the US during the 1920's and Amsterdam today. For Prostitution look at the State of Nevada.

The US governement statistics show between the enactment of the Hartley-Taft Act the percentage of opiate users in the US has been constant.

When you look at the lawlessness and the true establishment of organized crime in America's Prohibition Period, you can see people are not going to listen to the government telling them what to do when it comes to pleasure.

When you push people outside the Legal System, you get people who operate in VERY unethical ways. Looking at drug companies in general, you can see they are always trying to push the envelop of etchical behavior, mostly because in the US, the government is a semi criminal organization and an actively criminal organization the closer to the top you get.

One rarely hears of the Budwiser truck shooting at the Coors truck as they ride down the streets today. You never hear of someone drinking contaminated Ballentine Scotch. Reason? these companies are regulated and operate inside the legal system.

A friend of mine who was a doctor in the emergency ward at Bellvue Hosptial in NYC told me more than 90% of all drug deaths were either related to contamination ( bad cut) or accidental overdose. You never hear of drug companies putting battery acid in their morphine. Hence no bad cuts in the "legal drugs".

Accidental overdose happens because if you are a user and your dealer is a low level man who sells you product which has been "stepped on" ie cut many times, you are used to shooting say 2% heroin. Suddenly your dealer gets caught and thrown in jail and the new dealer you find is out there selling 5% heroin, but you don't know this due to inadequte labelling ! ;-)

Suddenly, you have 2.5 times your normal dose and you die.

The arguement drugs are bad for you is silly. So is alcohol, Macdonald's, too much sugar and living in a big city. More people die behind the wheel of cars than die from alcohol ( the number one killer drug by far). Are we ready to outlaw cars? or even alcohol, for that matter?

Drugs causing crime? Again, alcohol is a drug and you rarely see real crime other than the overserved acting overly stupid.

Travel to Holland and you will find a very well ordered society which has found it is cheaper to actually give away drugs to a certain group (opiate users) than it is to have police, courts, jails, prisons, probation officers et al.

By legalizing every drug, we stand the chance of having drug companies working out some of the problems with addiction and bad side effects. Of course there will always be the cheap, not so good drugs, just like there is Glenfiddich Scotch and there is the Brand X rotgut stuff.

Will some people die? Yes. People die in cars, falling down stairs and in bathrooms as well. Are we running out of people?

By making drugs legal, we stand a better chance of people Not Dying, than we have under our current situation.

On to selling pussy> Nevada has a law to allow women to work in legal brothels which are regulated, taxed and require medical check up. This same system exists in Holland. Both have lower rates of any STD's than places where sex is illegal and not regulated.

By legalizing both, you will bring all those people within the legal system and stand a much better chance of stopping drug wars, harmful drugs and women being exploited and people contracting STDs.

Of course this would lower property crime, which would take away the great FEAR which drives insurance income, police bribes, political bribes and extra high taxes.

Given how sensible it would be to do this, you can be sure it will never get done.

    Zip

  20. I think this is creating a dangerous temptation for pickpockets, bag slashers, armed robbers and muggers.

I believe "dangerous temptation" needs to be listed as "auspicious opportunity".

Plus the police will have far more employment opportunities, hospitals will get more business, then the medicines sold to ward of infections and for aches and pains, why this is a new works project.

Clearly there must be a lack of crime in Thailand, now, and this insightful program is doing its best to overcome this tragic shortfall.
