  1. Tenerife - the one in the north Los rodeos? - top of the hill, one second its a long way to the sea and then suddenly you're on the ground. Taking off is the same - I dont think they even need to go up, they just go straight and the land falls away. And effin' windy too!!

don't like Rome airport - always seems to take so long to get thru.

Changi is a bit sterile I think.....Heathrow is OK because it is so busy.

  2. I need a couple of days at the beach. I've stayed at Kata a few times and I really like it there. But what is it like now? Is it safe to swim? Is Phuket OK for tourists or is it best avoided for a while yet?

I'd appreciate anyone actually down there to give some info.

    Or Krabi.

    Thanks alot.

  3. I bought a 40Gb HD and a housing (you need both) for 5100Bht at Pantip about 1 month ago for the same reasons as you. Came with a little fake leather wallet and all the cables - out of the wallet it would fit in my shirt pocket.

It is USB 2.0 - tho' my laptop is only USB1.1. Took a while to copy off my HDD but had no problems with it.

It needs two USB ports as they are a bit power hungry so I bought a 4 port USB hub for about 250Bht.

60Gb HDD were also available which fitted into the same housing.

I bought it on the third floor - can't remember the shops name but ask around for the best price. The HDD itself was a fujitsu.

    good luck.

......beat me to it....The one I got was a 2.5" for a laptop so the size/speed issues raised above come into play, but I only use mine for back-up .

  4. Well done to the paddies. Best on Ground was Jack Russell.

As an aussie I would have loved to have been in Ireland for the matches, I'm sure there would have been a ###### of drink to be had and great 'craic' (is this the right word).

Pity the aussies didn't take it a bit more seriously but judging by the crowd, the Irish enjoyed the series. Good to see a bit of biffo too!!

    :o

  5. I am about to move to LOS and I have a Toshiba TE2100 laptop.

I plug it in to the mains with a 100-240V AC Adaptor. I think this should be OK to use in Thailand if I add a two pin plug adaptor.

But I was wondering - do I need a surge protector or UPS?? Is there anything else I need to know about using a computer in thailand??

    Thanks

  6. Never had an accident but feared for my life a few times in taxis.

First time ever in BKK caught a taxi from the airport, down the tollway - when he slowed down, he was doing 140km. White knuckled it the whole way and then he took me to the wrong hotel.

Another time in BKK in a taxi with a friend, came across a bus/car/car pile-up. The taxi driver drove past rubber-necking it, smiling, trying to see what the body count was and nearly cleaned-up the ambulance arriving at the scene.

I'm sure there must be some sort of contest going on for the BKK-Airport route...some of those guys drive SO fast down that tollway.

Never seen an accident in Phuket tho'

  7. merci francois,

I have been using adaware and spybot for a long time - nothing found

I tried the Trojan Remover - nothing found.

I just ran Norton Anti virus - it hung at C:\windows\system32\appmgmt\(a directory with random numbers etc)\ which the file explorer showed as empty.

I deleted that directory, ran the scanner over just the C:\windows\system32 folder and it scanned the lot with no problems showing up.

(There is also a directory c:\windows\system32\appmgmt\MACHINE which seems to have nothing in it.)

SO I don't know why its having the problem when scanning My Computer.

I read someting on the net about XP roaming profiles not exiting after use and ending up in C:\windows\system32\appmgmt\ - but then my eyes starting glazing over - above my level of understanding .

My computer works OK - but Norton keeps warning me that I haven't done a full scan for a long time.

Francois can you reccommend a good free virus scanner I can get off the web?

Thanks muchly for your help and suggestions :o

PS I've just done a full virus scan since deleting that directory and it completed with no viruses shown :D

  8. I was there once as a tourist - ordered a Guiness (I thought it would be a pint), a singapore sling (for the little lady) and a small plate of French Fries.

The pint was only a half so I ordered another.

    57 singapore dollars!!!!

It was a nice place, birds flying around in the bar, and those old mechanical fans on the ceiling but I won't be dinking there again.

Alcohol was EXPENSIVE everywhere in SIN - could never stay there too long. :o

  9. I use Norton Systemworks which has Norton Antivirus bundled with it.

Whenever I do a complete system virus scan it always hangs at a file somewhere in C/windows/system32/*.*

Sometimes the file is part of Adobe SVG, other times it is a *.DLL file.

It means I can never fully scan my computer because the only way out is to abort the scan.

I can select particular folders to scan but I think? it is probably important that the Windows/system32 folder gets scanned.

Anyone else have this problem/ know of a solution??

    Thanks

  10. I've never had trouble getting GOOD advice on this forum - plenty of laughs too!

If you read the forums a bit you'll soon work out who has the valuable knowledge about things in Thailand.

It's not WHAT gets said, but WHO'S saying it!!

  11. My travel agent pointed out that TG may not let me board if I didn't have a correct visa despite having a return ticket.

Who wants to take the chance of getting hassled on entry....I've never found it difficult to find out the entry requirements of any country I've visited.

Maybe I'm strange but I try to be across air tickets/visas/money more than three days before leaving. :o

  12. No physical harm was done here as in other wrong doing reports. Just another case of a guy trying to get ahead in life who has realised that the system doesn't favour him and his dreams of making it.

    Hi

I'm just a guy trying to get ahead in life and I'm pissed that the system doesn't favour me and my dreams aren't being fulfilled.

I was wondering if I could rip your bank account or credit card, perhaps knock-off your house when you're out - there'll be no physical harm, and besides there's a whole industry out there frauding and thieving...and they couldn't possibly be considered undesirable!!

    cheers.

  13. I was going to apply for a 60 day tourist but I got advised by people on this board to try for the non imm O - which proved to be great advice. I have just got the Non-Imm 'O' visa.

I have a few questions about it.

    The visa says as follows:-

"...seen at the Royal Thai consulate on 9 Sept, 2004. Good for Multi journeys to Thailand. This visa must be utilised before 9 September 2005 if passport remains valid."

I am arriving in Thailand at the beginning of November; does the 12 months validity start from when I arrive or from the date shown on the visa?

Is money in the bank something I need to worry about ie. 400,000 Bht ??

    "Multiple Visa - Multi Entries"

I take it this means I can make unlimited entries. I have read about re-entry permits - Do I need to get these? before I leave Thailand?

I have to leave the country every 3 months? And therefore I don't have to register my address?

"Non-Immigrant Visa classification 'O'. Extension of Stay not permitted."

    Is this usual??

Anything else I need to know - when I go thru immigration at BKK, any other hoops to jump through??

Thanks in advance...this board is a very valuable resource

  14. sporting dog, is that bank DIRECTLY across the road ?

Its across the road and maybe 100 metres to the right as you walk out of the embassy - but I really can't remember fully. I know its not far because we walked. The bank process was quick - they obviously had made out bank cheques to the embassy before and I THINK it cost about 40 baht for the cheque.

It was a pain in the arse on the day because we didn't know we couldn't use cash until we fronted the cashier's counter at the embassy - you pay first BEFORE handing over any documentation.

But now you know so it should be no big deal - at least not compared to the effort of getting together all the other stuff you need.

I've had no problems with the embassy.....be patient, be polite , smile (think of the beer after you've finished :o )

    Good Luck!!
