I think Thai kale is Chinese broccoli (gai-lan). The ones I get at the markets in Thailand are usually younger and more tender. There are many types of kale: lacinato, curly and Russian that I know of. People use it in salads or saute it. Kale is supposedly a very nutritious food. I like the taste of all these vegetables.. Not sure if I have seen kale at the stores... If so, it will most likely be the curly type which many people like in salads or to make smoothies/juice.
Oops. I forgot to say... In the USA, there is or was a big thing about kale and much talk about its high nutritious value. At farmers markets, one can get many varieties of kale = curly, Russian (purple and regular green) and Lacinato are the types that I've seen. Many people like the curly kale in salad or in smoothies, but I like them stir-fried or added to bean soups. I do not know if it is related to the Thai/Chinese kale or not although they all seem to have a slight bitterness.

If you want real fresh duck, please message me. We have a man near us in Tonkam who rears ducks.
Thank you, but I think the Muang Mai market and Makro will fit our needs this time.

Often things have different meanings here.
Fresh can mean not old or not frozen, either that is was never or was frozen previously. It can also mean many other things like it was it was frozen when fresh (is there another kind?), cooked recently or has a bad attitude.
That Tesco Lotus sold never previously frozen duck would surprise me though I never bought or saw "fresh" duck there.
I find the frozen duck breasts at Makro to be quite good. By scoring the skin the fat renders nicely and cooking to a true med-rare gives one a juicy result.
Yes, I should have probably asked for raw duck. We want to cook it by ourselves. We have in the past done the whole ducks, rendered the fat, made duck confit with the legs and had the breasts as you described. However, we are too lazy and it is too hot to do that now so this time, we are probably only after breasts.
Also, yes, I think Tesco's may have been frozen first, but I cannot be sure because I did not find them that way....
It has been ages since we've gone to Makro. Do you still need to get a membership card now?
-
Get mine frozen from Makro. Not fresh, I know, but it looks like duck, tastes like duck, so must be duck
Thank you. Sometimes frozen is an advantage... I.e. Not forced to cook right away after shopping!

The butcher section of Muang Mai market.
Thank you.

We used to buy fresh whole ducks or fresh duck legs or fresh duck breasts at Tesco Lotus. We have been checking periodically over the last couple of months and have not found any. Does anyone know where to buy fresh duck?
Thanks...

Thanks. I'll try the Mae Hia market. Sounds just the job!! Great if it's good quality and fresh and will survive the fridge a few days. Just to be sure I've got the RIGHT market (as there seems to be several about) it's the market between Samakhi School and 700 Years Road right?
I've been to Big C dozens of times but for the life of me can't recall whether it does rotisserie chicken. Never been looking for it before but can't say I've ever seen it there. Maybe it's just the one on the Super Highway that does it.
Mae Hia market - from the Big C/Home Pro go towards Canal Road. You have to turn on Canal so turn left. You will see cars parked diagonally on the left. The market is there. There is a Rim Ping Market further down.

I am pretty sure that there is a rotisserie chicken cart at the Maehia market. It is at the front part of the market not too far from the som tam place. I haven't tried it though. At that market, I usually get sai oua and nam prik.

Oh, also as soneone else mentioned, use a credit card that has collision and theft coverage for your auto rental.
-
Many times, I have found that the in town price for car rentals are cheaper than rentals at the airport. However, it is not as convenient so it takes more time and planning normally, but I thought I would mention it since it could save you some money.
-
Theres a guy operates at lower ground floor, Kad Suan Kaew, charges 30 Baht for a laminated credit card sized copy of your main passport page. I had some done last week in view of current problems out there. Not easy to describe exactly where, but on a corner position, very close to front entrance of Tops Supermarket.
From Tops going towards the food court, there is a guy that makes copies in a small corner. Is that who you are talking about? If yes, I didn't know he laminates also. I go to him for copying.

I don't think that they have a test. When you go in, maybe you can ask to look through the books so you can decide which level you want to try.
-
Yes, address is on the back of driver's license.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I went to the facility between Lotus and Big C/Home Pro on Hang Dong Road. It's closer to Big C.

You fill TM30.
Its obvious, you live somewhere and therefore should file the report
My understanding is you have to re-file a TM30 if you leave the country, then you file the TM30 within 24 hours
I think I was confused by the word "business" for that form. If I ignore that, then just follow instructions.
-
Regarding TM30, I followed a link to a web page on the Immigration website. On this page, it says it is for "Notification of residence of foreigners for businesses". If one doesn't have a business (i.e. not renting out their place) then does a "housemaster" have to fill out the TM30 or not? Do people just need to fill out this form to report that they are living in their own place and to be able to report when they return (within 24 hours) online?
Also, does one need to fill out a TM28 for when they go visit another province or can one rely on the hotel that one is renting to fill out a TM30?
Sorry, I am a bit confused....

I went in to renew a 5 year drivers license last Thursday at 1pm. Thanks to people who posted, I had everything I needed:
1. Original passport and copy of passport page + non-immigrant visa + last entry page
2. Proof of residence as stated in previous posts - original and copy
3. Thai Driver's license
4. Application that I think I got from this forum topic
5. Fee (car 500 + application 5 + smart card 100 = 605TB); also an additional 50 TB for change of address
Went to the 2nd floor and showed the information desk. They sent me to window 28. They looked through the paperwork, gave me a blue number and told me to wait until 1:10pm. Anyway, if you just watch, all of a sudden there will be a bunch of people heading for the testing room behind and to the left of window 28. The guy had us line up and we took turns as he pointed to colors and applicants answered. We had to wait until we were all done. Then there was a rush to pick up your application. I followed while the herd and ended up at a classroom. Oops. I went back to window 28 and asked them what to do. They brought me to the computers and started the video in English. I watched the hour long video. Went back to window 28, they sent me back to information where they gave me a white number. When they called the number, I went to the window and paid. Then I was told to get picture taken and, of course, I got another number. It took about 3 hours for the process and other than the wait due to the number of people, it went smoothly.

We have used Goodspeed (the one at Pantip Plaza several years ago) and Jibb (the one on one of the side streets off the North side of the moat). We had specifics before we went in and had done research on pricing online first. They both seemed fine.

thanks all i will stop in on monday
Monday is a holiday. Here's a link that I think is the current schedule. http://www.ymcachiangmai.org/UserFiles/File/program/YMCAThaiClassesforForeigner59.pdf
It is easier to sign up and talk to them in person. You will need to get a Y membership (I think it was 100 baht), pay for class (varies depends on level) and book(s).

I agree that KSK is more "comfortable" and I use it most often as it is the most convenient. I go there to make copies, top up my phone, get a massage, get a hair cut, go to the post office, buy stuff at Central, Tops or maybe something on the 3rd floor. Once in awhile, we'll go to the more hidden parts to see people bowling. The center outdoor area has displays on occasion and I quite like the Star wars stuff that is currently on display. There seem to be many kid friendly events and on display can be quite nice. Maya seems more formal and not as "lived in" although it is growing on me. I am very happy that there is a Rimping there although the selection is not as good as other Rimping Markets (it is a small store). The cinema is quite nice and we are taking advantage of it. It was nice to see the photograph displays this year there too. I like to look around at the Daiso store and on the roof, it is nice to look around at the city (maybe not at this smoky time). Anyway, I am happy to have a choice of places that is an easy walk.

Hmmmm unfortunately vegetarian food never rocked my boat. Mostly too boring for my taste buds.
But for some and for whatever reason they follow, it's their way of life.
Give me meat and 3 veg any day and I'm happy. But no meat ever? I'd be sick too often.....
I could go on about the chain of evolution and survival of the fittest etc....but why bother.
Each to their own.
I am a meat eater too, but the vegetarian food that I've eaten here can be very good. I miss Khun Churn because there was such a variety of dishes. We are not in the Kad Farang area very often and much less at lunch time, but will keep this in mind.
Thanks for letting me know that it may open again soon.

Elaine. See response #4. Just depart from Tha Pae Gate, cross the river, proceed 2 blocks, park car, take old wiper, search various shops along the 2 sides of that major roadway. You will succeed.
Drive carefully, you'll be going the wrong way on ThaPae road until just before the river.
We, actually, were coming from the railway station towards the river so it was not an issue for us.

+1 regarding upgrading windows
Also, if it just started bothering you, then maybe it'll be okay after February 22nd (see post #13). If this is the case, maybe take a short trip and come back in a couple of weeks...

Yes, I don't normally make Middle Eastern type food in Thailand because many of the recipes I want to make use lemon. Limes just aren't quite the same...
