  1. I've been to Thaitown in LA. I use to buy my tickets to Thailand from an agency located there. Yes, for sure some good places, but most in the US cater to American tastes...not hot enough!!!!

It always cracked me up to visit a Japanese restaurant in Vegas or California and see Mexican cooks! I knew I was at the wrong restaurant then....

Japanese restaurants can't afford Japanese cooks

  2. No, I won't be going.

Check out their website! This is NOT a Mexican restaurant! All they have on the menu that is remotely Mexican is nachos (which is junk food basically, I have never ordered that anywhere and never will) and Texas chili which is of course Texan, not even Tex-Mex. They sound like they do have a good chef, but he is doing European food mostly. Cheers. Folks, there is no way this place is what we are looking for in Pattaya to rate like the real Mexican places in Bangkok and CM. Why delude yourselves?

you are right, that review was bullshit

  3. The location of this Red Palm Mexican bistro is well off my radar. I am more likely to visit a Mexican restaurant in Paris France before I get out that way ...

All I can say about it based on the list of dishes in the review is that it is some kind of gringo-Mex, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (burritos rule), just saying ...

If the chef is so good (who cares if he's rude!), why not locate more centrally and give the masses a taste of this reported good stuff?

It is not that far, after all your complaints about the other places you should make an effort and share the review with us.

  4. I try places once. If they are crap, I stop. I don't believe in supporting the bad Mexican restaurants here. I don't think that helps our chances of getting a good one someday. I love Mexican food but I would rather have nothing than what's on offer here. I realize I have an extreme position on this. Hope for decent Mexican food here springs eternal.

One thing I don't understand. There are now multiple serviceable or better Mexican places in Bangkok. So there is competition there now among decent places. Here there is really no place that meets the decency standard of Bangkok. What's stopping someone from bringing good Mexican food to Pattaya? If all these bad places can stay open, imagine what a gold mine a really good place would be.

I realize a lot of people think Mike's is OK. But I can't imagine calling a Mexican restaurant that can't offer decent salsas OK, unless we are talking about a more formal kind of Mexican place doing things like huachinango veracruzana (which it isn't).

Blue Parrot's food is like a cheap place in Texas or California selling combo plates. Two kinds of Salsa, based on spice level as well and it is decent. i adapt to my surroundings to get a fix.

You can make your own Salsa, can buy this at Friendship.

  5. I also didn't like Jomtien Sam's. Once was enough to make a judgment -- piss poor effort. I don't like any Mexican restaurant in Pattaya. Still waiting for some smart person to start doing it right here, like has happened in Bangkok and CM.

so you don't eat Mexican food in Pattaya?

  6. I ate at the Blue Parrot once years ago and I found it atrocious. Have they improved? I find that hard to believe, but anyway ...

I don't understand how anyone who has had experience eating good Mexican food in the US or Mexico could feel the Blue Parrot has good food. Maybe a European thing?

i think the Blue Parrot is better than Mike's to tell you the truth for a basic plate, not sure about Fajita's, etc. . You should give it another try.

Been to Sam's once in Jomtien, not value for the money IMO. Al's little stands are the worst IMO, some kind of Euro style Mexican food.

Bob's BBQ has a decent buritto.

  7. Anyone tried this place? http://www.thepattayacantina.com/

  8. There is an excellent one at Jomtien Nivate which is on the hill on Thappraya Road - called Relax(?) (I was always there but now not sure of the name.)It is across the road from the Jade House! Has an air conditioned and unair conditioned exercise areas, sauna and it not expensive and the staff are good.

Does anyone know what Soi this is?

  9. I need to buy some Acid Reflux medicine. Where is a reliable pharmacy short of going to a hospital? I don't want grey market, etc from India and I don't trust the local antibiotic dispensing pharmacies on every corner

  10. Unlimited data would be really nice. Last I was in Thailand, I used DTAC/Happy and they charged data by the minute instead of by the byte. Unfortunately, the Nexus One likes to do lots of small polling operations. When I went to bed for 8 hours it seemed to use 5 hours of data time. So I was forced to disable data when I didn't really want it to be charged.

Dtac does have unlimited data. You have to sign up for a plan, otherwise you get charged by the minute and it is expensive. Unlimited edge 999 baht, 140 hours 399 baht, etc. Edge service was pretty decent and good enough for browsing when I used to use it.

If I have a 'regular' DTAC sim from 7-11 can i get one of these packages/internet access in general or do I need a special 'internet sim' to get data?

  11. the website in the US offers two versions. Which one is better for Thailand or does it matter?

    ---------------

Two versions of the device are currently offered. Both versions support four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900), but the supported 3G/UMTS bands will differ depending on the version selected. When ordering, you'll be able to select either of the following devices:

    • 3G coverage on networks that use the 850 MHz, 1900 MHz, and 2100 MHz frequency bands (recommended for use on AT&T in the US)
    • 3G coverage on networks that use the 900 MHz, AWS, and 2100 MHz frequency bands (recommended for use on T-Mobile in the US)
