  1. I've been out most of the day but I recall reading that there was video somewhere of Black Shirt armed combatants speaking Burmese to each other. Has there been any more information regarding that that has come to light? What's it mean? Anyone?

Someone said that it wasn't Burmese, but a north-easter dialect.

And then we remember when the proxy-government brought in the forest police from the same region and they used tougher measures on the PAD demonstrators (4 dead in one afternoon IIRC) - so who knows, could be something to it.

    Thanks

Cambodians? That's what this ex-red protester said today after getting out of the red stage area. Dressed in military uniforms, not sure if she says they are armed.

  2. If he was shot in the head with a high velocity round (from some distance) then he would not have much of a head left. Looks more like low velocity from close distance.

Rubbish, as usual from the "weapons experts". There is as yet nothing to support either piece of total conjecture.

Never professed to being a "weapons expert". But I suppose you have never owned or fired a firearm.

  3. We had the same dilemma last year when we applied. There was no option other than an xray if we wanted visa approval so we could give birth in Australia.

We consulted our pregnancy doctor in thailand, did all the research and finally decided that it was safe to do the xrays. The medical consensus seemed to be that done correctly with the knowledge that the patient was pregnant, that it was safe. We made sure that the dr and hospital radiologist communicated etc the pregnancy situation so that enough shielding, low rads etc were used and thought it was fine.

There are some real benefits to giving birth in Australia over thailand I think. Did they outweigh the potential risk of xrays I don't know. Our little 1 had a minor birth defect (webed little and second little toe on 1 foot) when she was born. Was it caused by the xrays? Research suggest not but we don't know but really makes us wonder if we made the wrong decision.

We traveled 3 months before the due date, about the latest that airlines say they will accept you. Get into your birth hospital straight away when you arrive in Oz to register because 3 months before being due is very late in Australia to get in the hospital system so as you can get pregnancy classes, check ups etc which are well worth it.

  4. Sorry I do not know anywhere in phuket or thailand but I do know about the process. I have the same dilemma myself with 50+ film reels (some of which are of bangkok in 1960's) that I want to archive digitally, so I've done some research.

The standard and most common way (cheapest) to transfer super 8mm to digital is to play the film with an 8mm projector and to video tape it with a digital video camera. On the web it's generally about US$30 per foot. This will be the way that any service that offers the transfer will do it no matter what they advertise. Although the alternative is to digitally scan every frame then put it together in a NLE package. That will cost you several thousands of dollars for a short reel so you'll know the difference.

If you want to do it yourself you will need a super 8mm adjustable speed projector from the 60/70s/80s that are hard to come by but can be bought on the web. A safe bet would be from a specialized site (not from ebay) as there are lots of things that go wrong with them if not looked after, especially lens deterioration. They are priced from US$500 ++. You will also need a digital video camera. The process itself is rather simple. You will never get as good as the original film, the digitization is good for archiving, easier editing and easier viewing.

  5. Spouse visa has basically 3 timed steps as far as I'm aware and really depends on you actually spending most of your time living in Australia.

    Either

    1. Subclass 309 visa (temporary) for 2 years

    2. Reviewed and generally if circumstances haven't changed receive a Subclass 100 visa (permanent) automatically for a further 5 years

    3. Within 4 or 5 years (haven't looked in detail) you can apply for citizenship which takes something like 8 months

    or

    1. Subclass 309 visa (temporary) for 2 years

    2. Reviewed and generally if circumstances haven't changed receive a Subclass 100 visa (permanent) automatically for a further 5 years

    3. Next apply for a Resident Return Visa which last for 5 years with eligibility based on the amount of time spent in Australia as a permanent resident

The application fee for the spouse visa covers both subclass 309 and 100 so you don't pay a fee when you get your subclass 100. As for citizenship I think the fee is AUD260 which covers the test and the RRV subclass 155 visa is also AUD260.

  6. Thought I would add our waiting time for our second stage Spouse (Migrant) (Subclass 100) Visa to this post

As I mentioned originally we were in a long term de facto relationship (7+ years) and married 4 months prior to our Spouse (provisional) subclass 309 visa application

Because of the long length of our de facto relationship we contacted ACTRO shortly after arrival in Australia to inquire about early consideration for a subclass 100 visa. A few months later it was approved. Here is the timeline

    7th August 2009 - Arrived in Australia

18th August 2009 - Wrote ACTRO an inquiry email

25th August 2009 - Received a reply email with necessary .pdf paperwork to submit by post

29th August 2009 - Received a a postal letter acknowledging our inquiry and and outline to the process. Of note was the paperwork had to be submitted within 2 months of receiving this letter

18th September 2009 - Submitted paperwork by registered mail

6th January 2010 - Received a phone call from our case officer and a 15 minute phone interview was conducted with both my wife and I

11th January 2010 - Received a postal letter of visa grant effective as of 4th January 2010

So that's about 105 days (15 weeks) from lodging application to visa issued

    Hope that helps somebody

  7. You get new start 14 days after applying at an office. In that 14 days you have to supply all the info they need, if u been away from australia for a long time the hardest is the required id to prove your identity and your address. You need your taxfile number as well. AUD$400 per fortnight

You can get rent assistance about AUD$220 fartnight, need lease agreement as proof

You can also get parental benefit i think its called, something like another AUD$400 a fortnight depending on age/number children

You probably are ineligible for baby bonus as I think has to be claimed within a year of childbirth

Your wife can claim emergency benefit if she is on a spouse visa temporary (about the same as newstart I think)

The amount of information they need is a lot for your wife as well. Bring all passports you have had your entire life as you have to put dates of periods in different countries and all bank account details and current statements (overseas as well)

  8. Happend very close to soi sri Ayuthya Bangkok near tewet market about 1pm on the last day of the violence. No 1 was wearing a red shirt but the group of about 200 were red shirt supporters with a mobile loudspeaker platform and speakers. About 30 minutes after recording a guy was showing the picture of a guy being drag away after apparently being shot dead (the picture that started the killing people accusation that was on cnn ireport).
