I can't make any leasing recommendations, but it might be worth you actually buying a car, used vehicles hold their value much better than they do in the West.

With the BTS, Red and Purple lines all operating in that direction, is public transport an option if it's just for your commute?

    Thank you for your reply.

The new Pink Line actually just started servicing my work area, but between the 3 different lines I would have to use, it would still be around 1.20 or so, so still preferably to take the car.

  2. Hi everybody,

I moved work place during the pandemic and started to need a car to drive to work everyday (25km north of Bangkok).

I got a great deal (IMO) from one of the large international car rental companies as they had no tourists to rent their cars to (newish Toyota Altis 15K a month all-in).

Now, my lease is up and they, understandably so, would like to increase the monthly rate significantly.

Anyone has recommendations for good long-term rental car companies or leasing companies that are worth seeking out?

I do not mind paying up to 25K a month, but preferably for a nicer car than my current one then.

Thank you in advance for your advice,

  3. Good morning,

Anybody successfully registered and received the new M-Pass as a non-KTB customer?

I got a new car recently and tried to register for the old Easy Pass to be told it's being replaced by the M-Pass?

However, after 2 less successful visits to 2 different KTB branches, I am still a bit confused about how to get the M-Pass as a non-KTB customer.

Anyone got any experience with this who like to share their stories?

    TIA

Pretty much every PCR test provider will have to report your result to health ministry. It is then up to them whether they send ambulance your way or not. So it's hard to talk about any low risk options.

The question was therefore, if any members here had personal experiences with hospitals/clinics where they were either sent home or to hospitals. Which would effect my decision on where to go for the PCR

No need for a PCR test… you’ve already tested ATK positive.

If you have mild symptoms there is no need to tell anyone, just isolate until ATK negative for 2 days in a row (about 7 days for most ppl).

You can phone the government Covid line if you want… they’ll tell you to stay at home & send a care package. You’ll be over it by the time the care package arrives !

This is good advice and I would do that, but I work for a company where policy is to get PCR tested once you test positive. So the PCR is a must. Question is now, where to take it with the lowest risk of getting admitted?

Thank you all for your helpful comments.

  6. So after having managed to escape Covid for 2 years in Bangkok, the dreaded 2 stripes finally appeared on today's ATK test.

Now, I am aware of the proper procedures and I intend to follow these, but I would really prefer home quarantine instead of any combination of hospital/hotel etc.

Are there hospitals/clinics you can go and take your PCR test, where the chances of them sending you home to self quarantine larger than others?

I could imagine that private hospitals would be more inclined to admit you than government hospitals, but this is just a feeling.

FWIW, I live by myself, am young and healthy and only very very mild symptoms.

Any experiences with this or advice, please share.

    Thank you in advance

honestly, you are far better off just getting a gym membership for a proper gym.

the only condo I would recommend is Ascott Sathorn. It is a serviced apartment with a high quality gym and a lot newer and nicer than Waterford (if you can afford it).

Again, I'd say getting a nice condo + a nice gym is a lot easier than getting a nice condo with a nice gym

A good suggestion. I actually had a viewing there and the gym is exactly what I was looking for.
Rooms and furniture however, were a bit too outdated, especially considering the asking price.

If you can afford it check out the River near Icon Siam, has a few very good gyms and a few pools as well on the property.

Thank you for the suggestion. I do love a good river view, but I am more looking for something on the Bangkok side of the river.

  9. Happy New Years!

I am looking for a condo with rental units in Central Bangkok (Suk/Sathorn/Silom) with a proper gym.

Proper in the sense it got bar bells, squat rack, pull-up station, dumbbells over 20kg etc.

A good example would be the Waterford Diamond in Suk 30/1, but preferably a condo slightly newer.

Anyone got any suggestions or recommendations?

    Thank you in advance

Because they didn't have it or it was too old and dated?

What about an older medical certificate?

So, you went in without an appointment?

Same building as where I got my license I presume (kinda forget)

    Thank you

Seems like they had a proof of residence, but there were some issues with it. What they were, I do not know.

You need to have a new medical certificate. Can't remember exactly how old it can be, but not more than a month old or so. Dr. Donna took care of it in 10 min and dirt cheap so that would be my recommendation.

No appointments for foreigners, is my understanding at the moment. Only walk-in and first come.
Cannot stress how important it is that you get there early. 6.30 or so, and you'll be good.

Yeah, same building as always. Big purple front at the end of the complex when you come from Phahon Yothin.

  11. Went to the DLT in Chatuchak to renew my license last week.

They only process 40 foreigners a day, on a first-come basis. I arrived at 6.50am and all seats were filled up by then, so go there very early. Quite a few had problems with the proof of residence and was turned away so make sure you got that in order.

That being said, once you get your queue number, it is as smooth sailing as dealing with Thai government entities gets.

Best to go and check as DLT offices are fond of pretending they are closed due to Wuflu but are in fact open certainly for road tax and some other services. Banglamung kept me at bay for 3 mths before an adjacent driving school (Pattaya Klang) told me they were actually open all the time with an antiseptic spray on the way in and were just trying to reduce applicants

Oh, that's definitely a hot inside tip. Thanks a lot. Will give it a try.

From what I know you can, the DLT's in provinces do some things differently and during a pandemic the only way to find out is ring your local DLT up or go there and ask them.

Thank you very much for your reply.

After calling various DLTs and having some Thai friends do the same, the conclusion was that you can indeed apply 3 months before expiration.

With the small caveat of course that they are now closed for the foreseeable future for all inquiries.

  14. Sorry to hijack the thread (Mods, let me know if you prefer that I start a new one).

Have anyone tried to convert their 2 year license to the 5 year well in advance of it expiring?

I got my 2 years temporary license 4 months ago and would already like to convert it to the 5 year permanent.

Anyone have any experience with this?
Recent being, is that I would like to obtain the International Driving Permit.

    Thank you in advance.

  15. Thank you for the replies so far.

@chickenslegs, very useful link. Thank you.

As I read it, I am going into the Case 1, which states:

Case 1 Passengers' accompanying belongings which are not for commercial purpose and do not exceed 200,000 baht in value
    Procedure

      1. Customs officers at the "Goods to Declare" channel assess flat rate duty and taxes
      2. Passengers make payment of duty and taxes by cash or debit/credit card
      3. Passengers are provided with payment receipts and retrieve their belongings

The key word here is flat rate duty, as this will most likely be a lot less than the "real" duty that you would pay in retail, as this duty is measured in large by the perceived retail value.

If anyone has direct experience with this, please chime in, as I would be interested in knowing what the flat rate duty would be and how they calculate that there on the spot.

  16. With the moronic taxes on wine here, I often bring back a bottle or two more than allowed when I travel.

However, I am heading to France soon and I want to bring back 6-8 bottles back of hard-to-find wines.

Needless to say, I would prefer not to get caught and run the risk of getting my bottles confiscated.

Has anyone any experience of surrendering at Customs and get them to work out a tax by bottle to be paid on the spot?

More specifically, how do they calculate the tax on the individual bottles? Whatever tax there is to be paid, can I pay with credit card there? And any other good advice on this subject?

    Thank you in advance.

  17. Hi everybody,

Anyone got a personal recommendation for a dermatologist in Bangkok for foot corn treatment?
I usually go to Samitivej for all medical issues but that seems a bit overkill in the case of a foot corn. So I am looking for a dermatologist or a regular GP that can help me out with this issue.

    Thank you in advance.
