  1. Oceanus,

My best advice, considering you don’t want to go for a job as a ridiculously underpaid job as an english teacher, is to get hold of an agent (often referred to as a pimp) operating in this region. Management experience will certainly help if you’re looking for a position that offers a decent salary and some benefits. I know at least a couple of pimps, they’re always looking for skilled people at management level. Having said so, the opportunities are getting scarce and the packages are less tempting.

Doing it all by yourself will be difficult. As always, connections are useful and being in the region is crucial. I understand you have neither, so you need to find yourself a pimp.

    Good Luck

  2. Britain's not THAT bad, is it?
I lived in London for 10 years. It was my home. I loved the place. Still do. But there's a flip side of every coin. To sum it up: Britain can be VERY bad. Especially England.

What do you mean? Have you lived for 10 years in Wales and Scotland too?

And what do you mean 'Britain can be VERY bad'? In what way?

I mean that there are loads of good things to be said about Britain. But there are bad things also. VERY bad. For instance, I don't think I have ever been to a country where people aren't able to handle criticism; no matter how correct you might be, tell them something negative about their country and it is kindergarten time. But if you ask me (and you did), I would say the worst feature of an unusually large percentage of the British population is a tendency to blame others for their own mistakes and tell lies. Obviously, this is a personal opinion based on experiences rather than empiric studies and I could have been just unlucky, but you asked for it...

  3. A little OT, but here's a story that relates to the topic:

When I came to LOS I quickly made friends with a person who'd lived here for five years. I was a freshman here, and didn't know much, but it was obvious that his mindset was not exactly a perfect match with LOS. He spent the last six months in this country complaining about Thais. Lok this and lok that. He spoke so badly about Thais I sometimes felt really uncomfortable. In his mind, there wasn't a Thai person who wouldn't scam you if he got the opportunity. He used words as scumbags and useless idiots. One Friday he asked me for a loan, he was relocating back home in order to take care of his mother, and had already transferred all his funds to his native land. For this reason, he was out of cash and would reimburse me the following Monday as soon as the bank opened. I was later told his flight had departed 7am on Monday. I haven't seen the man since.

When I think about it, paying 50K baht to make sure the idiot stays away from this country is probably the best thing I have ever done to improve the reputation of farangs.

My point is (in relation to the initial topic): I don't think the question can be answered. Me myself, I have a bunch of Thai friends I wouldn't trade for anything. There are idiots in both camps. As for the "falang lok" who traded a good friendship for the pathetic sum of 50K baht: I doubt even a mother can love him...

  4. I have come to the conclusion that there is an enormous concentration of doubtful Thai characters in direct relation to any tourist dense area of Thailand. Interestingly enough, the exact same places are also home to most farangs referred to by the average local taxi driver as “bullshit farang”. Personally I couldn’t care less about their native origin; I can’t stand either one of them.

  5. If you dont have any previous finance or thai creditcard, 35% down on passanger car seems normal without thai guarantor. 10% is doable if creditrating is excellent.
Ok, thanks, that pretty much makes sense.

I guess a Thai Amex Corporate card doesn't give me any credit rating even though I recently received notice that they have shared my credit information with the appropriate credit rating agencies in Thailand?

  6. I am on the verge of buying a car. I am not to sure I want to cough up the +1.3M for a new Camry. I was thinking more in terms of making a 300K downpayment and finance the rest. After reading some of the threads on this forum it appears that downpayments are "refreshingly" low in Thailand, but in my case it seems like 35% is the minimum. This is just not the Toyota dealer, Honda appears to have the same policy for the Accord.

Is this just a hoax or is this the usual farang terms I simply have to settle for?

I should mention that I dont have a Thai national as guarantor.

  7. Well, thank you! Next time I need some advice on anger management I'll be sure to check on your psychology advice topic on this forum. But this is a discussion regarding TV Channels. <deleted>, keep your advice to tourself, Dr. Frazier Crane, and learn how to focus on the issue.

<deleted>, try using more than 2 buttons on your remote before you pop a vein. :)

<deleted>, are you a cardio vascular expert as well? Why dont start a new topic and discuss that with alikes?

  8. Sounds like someone didn't read their Truevisions magazine this month?
You're absolutely right, if I recall correctly I went for a few cold ones with my mates, played a couple of rounds of golf, went to Ko Chang for some scuba and on top of that enjoyed the pleasures of my girlfriend as often as possible. But read the Truevision magazine?? Nope, I missed that one. <deleted>.

    :)

  9. Movies have moved to the 40's
Hey, the mystery is getting solved - I HAVE the movie channels, It's just that there's something going on with the decoder. I can only get to the channel by manually entering "43", if I go via the TV Guide or browse using the P- and P+ buttons it skips all channels but 41 and 49.
  10. I am fuc_king FURIOUS!!! Someone deserves to get punched in the face. Twice.

I'll echo what the others have suggested (I have True Gold package as well). But seriously man, an even more important suggestion is to get control over the anger. Maybe this is just exaggerated online venting, but a reaction like this can get you into serious trouble in Thailand.

  11. what channels did you lose? my gold package has seemed to reorder the channels but I don't notice any missing. Ones I watch anyway.

Most of the sports channels (the old 60-69), for instance. I have one sports channel now (107).

I also lost the movie channels (the old 12-17).

  12. A couple of days ago I was notified of a change in the True gold package. Today I came home and realised I have lost more or less every channel that was the orignal reason I signed up for the subscription in the first place.

Is it something wrong with my decoder or am I just subject to an advanced cable-TV scam: get a large number of customers and when the contracts are signed, change the conditions...
