  1. Posters here who want to compare and evaluate the speed of their fiber or other internet services need to be careful about a couple of things:

Speedtest.net speed test results done inside Thailand for international connections are almost always FALSE... A good example is the member above who posted a supposed test to Seattle that showed a 25 ms ping, when in reality, the fastest ping you can physically get between Thailand and the U.S. is something like 200+ ms.

It's occurred to me that you're being grossly inconsiderate here. There are farang all over Thailand who have lived here for years and regularly race to their computers to tell all their friends about the amazingly fast Internet speeds they've just signed up for. Ignorance is bliss and life was wonderful until you came along and spilled the beans about the true facts. What the heck do the facts have to do with it? I've just changed over to True's fiber optic deal, offering 15mbps for 699b/month. Here are the speedtest results from 2 of the sites you mentioned. They're clearly wrong and I fully intend to continue to falsely believe I'm really getting 15mbps smile.png Thank you True for my super-fast connection.

  2. thanks for all the replies. Since I've been in Thailand and swapped Internet accounts, I've become wiser as to how they regularly regurgitate 2 lies over here!

    1) ISPs here invariably quote extremely high Internet connection speeds, which are actually BS - and many farang will proudly repeat them in these forums. These speeds are actually for Thai websites only, and the truth is your connection to foreign sites (which is usually what we all want) is a fraction of that - 1-2mbps, nothing like 15 or 20 or 30 mpbs! I had this confirmed to me when I chatted to the customer service lady at 3BB, which is the only company in Khon Kaen to offer a special "premier international" package, costing 2,599 baht/month as opposed to the far cheaper other options. Even then she told me the international speeds are only 5 mbps on that service, roughly 3 times the speed everyone else is getting for foreign sites.

    2) I'm no expert at this but a friend told me that true fiber optic means getting your own (thick white) cable from the original connection point ... in fact that doesn't seem to happen here. When I visited True (the only one of the 3 Internet companies now offering fiber in Khon Kaen - the other 2 say they are at capacity), the assistant told me installation was free, unless I was further than 70 meters from the nearest connection point. Then she brought up a map of my soi and happily told me I'd be fine because there was already a cable running up our tiny soi servicing some neighbors. So it seems to me we are all sharing the same cable. Is this a real fiber account? If not, the only advantage of this "fiber" connection is that the white cable might be more capable of resisting storms etc...

  3. Hi, I've been using adsl for years but here in Khon Kaen the connection is appalling - it forever cuts out, which is annoying if you're watching the news or sport on a streaming website

I'm considering switching to a fiber optic account (not for the extra speed cos I know the speeds they quote are for Thailand only) but because I think fiber optic might be a more reliable connection
what confuses me is that I once read you get your own unique cable with fiber and don't share a cable with hundreds of others (as you do with 3BB in Piman 2 for instance) - but when I spoke to True about their fiber optic service they happily told me they'd be using the cable which is already hooked up down our soi
bottom line: is fiber usually a better connection and service?
    cheers
  4. thanks for all the help. I had no idea all along that I'd need to buy a satellite dish as well. I've got an old True TV satellite dish which my mate doesn't think would be OK. I went to the local 7-11 yesterday and they sell the box for 1599 but nobody has any idea where to get a dish from

then ... I found out the BBC is showing most of the games live anyway - since I have a VPN I can watch whatever the Beeb is showing and watch the rest live on firstrow (which is banned in Thailand but works fine with the VPN)

so thanks for all the posts. I'm gonna forget about watching on the TV or swallow my pride and go back to the ***** at Expat

    and rely on the VPN!

  5. CTH bought the rights to show the premier league for three years so nobody else will be showing the EPL until at least until 2016/17 season.

RS has the rights for the world cup.

Unless you want to watch the games that are being broadcast from another country (ie. over the internet) then you will need a set top box as described earlier.

Yesterday I ordered a HD box from 9sats at a cost of 1667 baht including postage, when I receive this and actually try it out then I will post my findings on here for anyone's interest. I am led to believe it connects to two types of satellite, including the truevision satellite, and it receives 200 channels, and it is a once only payment.

    HL

is there a phone number we can call and speak to someone who speaks English and can organise sending a box to Khon Kaen? I just phoned one number (1781) and it'll all in Thai.

I take it this box will work with any kind of TV? Mine doesn't even have the right socket (HDMI ?) to connect to a laptop

I've heard enough about this box to think it's worth having a go - at 1600 baht, it'll be money well spent even if I don't watch much after the world cup

  6. only just signed back in and realised so many replies -

if you want English commentaries like me and also more than 22 games, it seems you can either go for the streaming version (TV catch up or Expat) or this RS thing, which I've never heard of - for those of us who can't read Thai, can someone tell me what you get for your 1500 or so baht - and if they show Premier League live during the season also?

    cheers

  7. This is probably of interest only to fellow farang in Khon Kaen but I found out today that CTH has ended its partnership with KTV, so from now on we have to go somewhere else if we want to sign up for the World Cup football and Premier League.

I visited the KTV office at Keha Village and they told me they couldn't help me to sign up for CTH's coverage of the World Cup. I asked repeatedly to make sure (I hadn't heard it before) but they were adamant they were no longer involved in providing CTH packages.

They said I had to phone a CTH customer support number (1619), so I did. There's an English language option and an English speaker duly told me they had switched agencies in Khon Kaen to Home TV. I believe the only package which offers World Cup and Premier League footy is the top one, which costs 1,069 a month, plus an installation fee, plus a deposit in the 1st bill.

Apologies if you already knew this. I hadn't heard of it before.

Btw, in case you're thinking about signing up, you should be aware they're only offering 22 of the World Cup games and they've promised to email me the details of which ones are included.

  8. World cup Footy? I thought footy is only played in OZ giggle.gif

Haha. Mate I'm in Thailand on my Aussie passport but even I have to admit Aussie Rules is a distant 2nd to the world's number one sport !

  9. Will do thanks. BTW I don't mind being cut off if I'm overdue on payments but I'm ropeable when I'm cut off prematurely as Expat did :)

  10. 365 is by far the best option.

thanks, I searched online and all I found was something about 365 being another streaming option, which might not be any better than watching it on firstrow - could you tell me where I can find out more about it?

if not, I think here in Khon Kaen, the same mob that does the Premier League on TV (CTH) has TV rights to most games so I'll probably go with them

  11. Hi anyone know where to get English language coverage of Brazil world cup? I used to have UKTV and they were great but since the Expat takeover they've gone to pot and had the nerve to disconnect me prematurely when my renewal was due, causing me to miss a big game and they can get stuffed.

I'm now using a VPN to watch firstrow website but wonder if there are any other alternatives? Cheers

  12. Fiber may provide increased speeds for connections inside Thailand.

But thus far through many months of posts, I've yet to see any reliable, clearly documented posts here by fiber customers from any of the various retail ISP providers that show meaningful international speed improvements for the added extra monthly cost.

very interesting point - my friend here in Khon Kaen swears by his "3BB Ïnternational Premium" fiber optic deal, which "guarantees" high speeds internationally too

sounds like you're not convinced that is so - in which case, what would you say is the best deal you can get for international websites?

edit: just finished reading the rest of the posts - sounds like he's talking about the "premier" package, which you seem to believe is the only one that provides genuine international speeds - is that right?

  13. Hope this is the right place to post this, I just wanted to recommend an awesome place I just rented a scooter from

    http://kessayamotorbikerentals.com

The English guy there, Mark, has bikes for 600B a week and what's more, he brings it to your hotel and picks it up when you're done. Top service

  14. Any bar that shows newcastle is a good bar in my opinion.

Champions League for the magpies this year feel it in me water.

Lol, you must be feeling a bit stupid now. I think you meant Championship footy, not Champions League smile.png

  15. You admit you were in arrears.

You lose your deposit and your stuff will be chucked.

Why would you believe it should be any different?

what? I was only in arrears because my friend phoned her to give her money and she wouldn't reply to him.

We both tried to ages to contact her and she ignored all our efforts.

  16. I have a great cheap rental in Khon kaen but the landlady's always been difficult, refusing to pay for repairs etc. I'm now overseas and paid my rent in advance before I left. Yesterday she emailed me to say she wants me out immediately due to my rent being late. Actually my next-door neighbour, an Aussie, contacted her to pay the money for me some weeks ago and she wouldn't reply to him. She also ignored all my efforts to contact her. Because this is Thailand and I'm overseas, I feared she'd break into the house at any time and throw my stuff out.

Eventually last night I got her to visit a friend, who paid my arrears ob my behalf. Suddenly, she said she wanted an extra 4000 baht because the elec bill hadn't been paid for 6 months so I'd been cut off and the Power Company had taken away the meter and wanted a deposit for a new one etc. I contacted my Aussie mate, who says he has paid every bill on time since I've been away and has kept all the receipts. She is clearly lying through her teeth. Either the meter was never taken away or she got them to take it away to try to get me out

we have a 12-month contract that doesn't expire until July. Normally, in a civilized country, you'd show the receipts and take it up with the authorities but this being KK and me being a farang I fear I've got no chance of recovering the money she insisted we pay over last night

Have I got any chance of getting it back? She's also got 1 month's bond money. Yes, I want to find another rental ASAP, just wondering if I'll get anywhere if I take this further :)

  17. Hi I'm about to move to Thailand. My old retirement visa has run out so I was going to get a new one (through the same people I got the old one!) after arriving

I've now been told by DHL that customs will charge me duty for everything, even personal items, unless I have a work permit. Sounds crazy. Does anyone know if I'm exempt from paying customs duty if my passport shows a retirement visa instead? Surely you're allowed to ship over your stuff if you're moving there?

if they insist on charging me, does anyone know how much they whack you for? I'm only shipping over clothes, CDs, photos, 3 paintings and my collection of souvenir tea mugs - about 10 average boxes, total value around $3,000 USD

    cheers

  18. can anyone tell me if there are plans for the Expat player to allow for saving entire programs to hard disk as with UKTV (as opposed to recording as you're watching)?

if not, it will always be a waste of money and I'll stick with UKTV player

also, I've always had prompt email replies from Peter at UKTV - how's the service at Expat?

it would be good to know what they're planning for the future

  19. I've been very happy with UKTV but updated to ThaiExpat software as recommended - it was awful! So I've immediately switched back.

Unless I'm missing something the inability to record past programs is a deal-breaker as far as Im concerned

plus I couldn't even find a way to change the default directories to save the programs

and the live recording function was anything but user-friendly

I also tried that Mozilla add-on that so many people have been going on about -

ok, it's free but can u record programs you've missed and save them to hard disk to watch when u feel like it?

  20. this just got better, with CNN and others added - hopefully, it'll stay OK now cos it's brilliant!

I've only had it for a few weeks - does anyone know why it goes off every now and then? Authorities...?

  21. hi, I'm in Khon Kaen - can someone tell me the phone number/address to contact re setting up EPL coverage? All I've heard is it's CTH. thanks

Why not contact them direct and ask who they may be using as an agent in your area.

    http://www.cth.co.th/

because I thought a helpful fellow farang who lives here and already knows the answer might be quick and easy? thanks anyway!

  23. thanks - I ploughed my way through that but it's full of negative stories about insurance companies in Thailand, esp AIA and Bupa, while most other posters veered off into various other tangents. I didn't notice any stories of anyone having a great experience with either a broker or company here, which is also my experience to date. Maybe it isn't worth the effort!
