  1. I’m thinking of opening a sterling  deposit account with Bangkok Bank as a hedge against a future Corbyn government following a post election run on the pound introducing exchange controls which we last saw in the UK back in early 1980s.

My plan would be to transfer cash from that account to a Bangkok Bank current account in baht as and when I needed it.

Am I correct in thinking that each time I transferred some cash Bangkok bank would charge me 2% of the amount withdrawn?

  2. For those who may have the same problem in the future my lack of sound on John Dykes and others comments pre match half time and post match on CTH cable 136 was eventually resolved by replacing the box with a new one after approximately 20 calls to 1619 and two engineer's visits.

  3. Many thanks for the replies so far.

I always used the Laguna in the food hall for I guess 20 or so years on my trips up to Bangkok. Being a creature of habit and a regular I usually had the same dishes and the food bill always remained the same with little or no increase over the years despite the menu price increases. The same cannot be said for the drinks bill.

Can anyone please confirm whether the food stalls on the old mini night market at Soi 1 Sukhumvit are still there?

Also I seem to recall the Nana Hotel coffee shop had reasonable Thai fare at non rip off prices. Is that still the case?

  4. I live in Hua Hin and have not been up to Chiang Mai for over 10 years. I am going up there in mid February for a week and would be very grateful for any restaurant / bar recommendations nearby.

I have already searched the forum but have not come across any up to date information for this area and do not trust the Trip adviser reviews for obvious reasons.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  5. I live in Hua Hin and last visited Chiang Mai 6 years ago when on the advice of the Thai Visa forum I stayed at the Royal Princess which was fine. From a search it would cost me about 2500-3000 to stay there in January 2013 which is more than I want to pay.

I would be very grateful for any advice on a good clean and safe hotel/guest house in the same area at about 1500.

    Many thanks in advance.

  6. If my memory serves me correct I recall that at the time the cabinet was considering their options with regard to a disposal of TEC they passed a resolution changing the law in relation to the TE visa linking it to the life of each member as opposed to the life of TEC. I also recall seeing an article from Sunbelt confirming that this amendment had gone through all necessary legal hoops and been put on the statute books.Due to my limited computer skills I have been unable to verify the position. Whilst I appreciate that the current or any future government can change the law at anytime and may do so when they wind up TEC surely if this is the case it strengthens any negotiating position we may have.

Can someone please post a link to Sunbelts confirmation of this legislation?

  7. There is a very large temple complex on top of a hill at Tha Muang, excellent photo op! If you are renting a van you may want to consider getting dropped off at Saiyok and getting the train back to Kan, fantastic scenery along the river.

Many thanks for the replies so far. From the research I have done Erawan looks a must but am concerned about the Thai girls ability to walk up to the various waterfalls. To which of the 7 levels would the average thai girl reach and what footwear would you recommend for both the girls and the farangs?

With regard to the post immediately above is Tha Muang on the way to Saiyok and if not how long would it take to drive to each of these places and approx how long is the train ride from Saiyok, which sounds fantastic, and what is the frequency of the trains back to Kan?

  8. I live in Hua Hin and am making my 1st trip to Kan next week staying at the Phong Phen on the advice of this forum. We are a party of 6 people comprising 3 farangs with 3 Thai partners and would be most grateful for recommendations for the best way to spend 2 full afternoons sightseeing. We are happy to hire a minivan for any longer trips you may recommend.

We would also be very grateful for your views of the best restaurants and bars within walking distance of the Phong Phen.

Many thanks in advance for any advice offered.

  9. I see from the earlier World Cup thread that some of the games will be shown on Thai Channel 11. My problem is that I only have a True box and do not have cable TV but cannot find Thai channel 11 in the True programme schedule. I have tried unsuccessfully to contact True by phone today and would be very grateful if someone could please help me.

  10. Thanks very much for all the advice so far. A decent size pool is essential as my mate needs to swim for 45 minutes each day for health reasons and he will also want secure safe deposits available whereever he stays. He will not take a motorbike taxi so are there any normal taxis/tuk tuks around the River Kwai hotel or is walking around the cemetry the only option?

  11. I live in Hua Hin and have never been to Kan. A mate who is visiting LOS later this year and who stayed at the Felix Hotel on his only previous trip to Kan wants me to meet him there. He found the Felix to be too far from the strip and has asked me to research hotels with swimming pools within walking distance of the strip at around 2000 baht per night. From my initial online research the River Kwai Hotel seems a possibility and I would be very grateful if someone could advise how long it would take to walk to the strip from there and on its general suitability based on his criterion.

    All help greatly appreciated.
