  1. I saw this thread on the Samui board and I thought it was a good idea. I have yet to experience the fattening bliss of an excellent pizza. Anyone have suggestions? Where are the prime pizza joints?

I've been living in Phuket for well over a year now and I have yet to find quality pizza. But I haven't really been looking and I bet there's some good stuff to be had.

A good place in my area is Twins restaurant on Surin Beach.

    mmmm...pizza

    :o

  2. I love it when people congregate at the bottom of escalotors either after going down or waiting to go up. Big C in Phuket is the worst for that. They decide that their conversation is more important then the queue waiting to get on or off the escalator. Most Thai people will wait till their finished....I just put my head down, and bull doze through while repeating, Koh Toad! Koh toad.

And don't get me started on people budding into line-ups (queues) at 7/11s or any kind of shop. I know a British guy who went crazy for this reason, after living here for 2 years, he vowed never to return. Ha! All because of the queues.

I think the first sentence I learned in Thai was: "I came here first!"

  3. But everyone is missing the point. The Thai Muslims in the South (Southern Songkhla and all the provinces south of Songkhla) who are making all the noise are separatists.

They have a unique language and culture that is different and separate from the rest of Thailand. They want to protect this unique culture from assimilation into Thaksin's and previous government's views of how the south should be. This struggle has been going on for a thousand years or so.

Thus, as separatists, the Southern Muslims are fighting against the government of Thailand. Their targets are not tourists or Westeners...their targets are the ones who are trying to repress and squash their ideals and demands of recognition. Thus, the Thai army, police and various government institutions are the targets.

But, there is always the possibility that other foreign terrorist groups have or will seek refuge in the South of Thailand due to the lax security. But this has not been proven yet.

Thus, we should not jump to conclusions and deem the Muslims of southern Thailand as petty terrorists but as a people who are trying to protect their identity. Although, the recent bombings of such soft targets as Buddhist Temples and Government schools was counter-productive and will eventually strengthen Bangkok's determination to suppress them (especially now that the World is watching).

  4. The thread is about Mexican food in Thailand. I sort of broadened it to include anywhere in Asia.  If you have found great (or even decent) Mexican food, in any form, in Asia, please post.

    TH

Actually, I believe this post that I started was about Mexican food in Bangkok.

  5. Where I live they are no PC games sold at all.

I have to take my puter back to the shop where I bought it and they install the games for me. I have been doing this for three years now and they still have not charged me one baht.

Problem is I want MS Flight Simulator and they do not have it.

Any one here got a copy ?

Sounds like a pain in the ass....but free games nonetheless.

  6. Welcome to BBK.

Try Mexico, :D they may have some….me think… sorry, Kan not help you with that one in BKK. :D Try some Thai food, heard that is very spicy… :D

Tony Roma’s on Sukumvit near soi 5 to 7 me think for BBQ baby back beef ribs… :D

Thanks for the insight. Very practical.

Thai food...remind me...do you mean spring rolls? Those aren't spicy.

um...Mexico...? Whose has the time to go to Mexico? And who can find it, all tucked away up there.

So, BBQ ribs huh? No quite what I'm looking for...but I hear Naritiwat or Pattani has the best baby back pork ribs. Must be the sauce. I highly recommend it. If you do make it to the South, and order some ribs, just mention that you are a staunch supporter of Thaksin, and they'll give ya a discount.

    Good luck. :o

  7. I think I ate at Pico's last time I was in BKK. Is that in the Silom Area?

Chilli's in Jakarta...quite a long haul for some fajitas. I ate at the Chilli's in KL's Petronas Towers Shopping center (or whatever the name is) and it did the trick.

El Gordo was the nickname of a 22 year old senior during my old days of high school. He was the welding king....four years of welding skills ahead of everyone.

Think I'll pass on El Gordo's.

But thanks for your input...I may just try out a few of these places. Store up for the upcoming Monsoon hibernation period.

    Cheers!

  8. Only thing good about sizzler is the salad bar...especially when you're weekly veggie intake is as low as mine...

Outback Steakhouse...I could use some chain-store steak about now...

    I'm getting hungry.

    Thanks for the info.

  9. Bargirls...a very crafty, street-wise sort with a vast ability to annoy me to the point of well, annoyance (to be civil)...though I have met a few who seemed genuinely interested, in...well, manipulation...oh my...have I let their secret out?

As for bars, I am a fan, though I have yet to find a bar in Phuket, and in Thailand, that I would deem home...I need a little more than Bon Jovi and the Eagles to motivate me to pay tourist prices for sub-par beer

And Bob Marley is not the answer

    ...but

foosball & pool tables would possibly change that

  10. I'm desperate here. Is there even a Chilli's there? Even suburban mall tex-mex food will suffice as long as its better than the mexi food found here in Phuket and elsewhere in the South.

  11. I will be heading to Bkk soon for some electronics shopping and I would like to know where some, if any, high quality mexican restaurants can be found. The last time I had mexi in Bkk I was thouroughly disappointed (forgot the name of the rest.).

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Oh....How about a good steak restaurant with BBQ sauce? None of this Pepper sauce crap. Anybody know a good BBQ steak house in Bkk?

    Cheers.

  12. Yes, I'm a freak. The Xbox is my master. When the waves are high, and the slanted rain stings my eyes, and UBC is as disappointing as usual, I turn to my lovely little black box.

Anyways, any of you cats got an xbox? Where do u get your games? I found three or four places in Patong that have games (usually B180 per pop, but sometimes B150). I heard of a shop in town that has them, but I'm not sure where. And of course TESCO, which is where I get most of my games cuz the guy who owns the shop is honest and funny as ###### (and he has good games, and most of the new ones). Anyways....anybody got some other xbox game locations 4 me? Cheers!

  13. How's playing online games with TT&T's ADSL HiNet package? Is it worth trying?

I have neglected my PC games since I got an xbox a month or two ago. Got something like 30 games (2 orginal!), and man oh man, the xbox is king. Halo and Ninja Gaiden may be the best 2 action games of all times. Halo 2 is coming out in November. Fable looks wicked and if it lives of to the hype may be the best RPG of all time. Starwars Battlefront looks awesome....but I would need some xbox buddies to hook up an ethernet connection between 2 boxes to have some 8 player multiplayer mayhem. Any Xboxers in Phuket looking to have some Halo mayhem? Yes, games are addicting and potentially damaging to social relationships...but they refine my hand and eye coordination. Is it worth it....hells yeah.

  14. can we set up an anti speedo law in pattaya, mainly against the european middle aged tanned skinny men in luminous speedos,

Luminous Speedos....Oh my...those are the worst offenders. They're like the heroin of the speedo underground. Very addictive. Very destructive.

  15. Seems to me this tread is yet another example of yanks trying to impose their "values" upon the rest of the world, including Europe, Asia and South America.

If the sight of a fat person in speedos offend you look the other way. Nobody force you to look. Sheesh!

No yanks here my good chap. Just a good ol' Canuck. And a concerned citizen. Sure, the European comment was a generalization, but in all honesty, Europeans are the biggest Speedo offenders out there.

Its pretty hard not to see speedos when they're everywhere! Speedos to the left, speedos to the right, Speedos jammed up that man's crack! Argh. I'm in Speedo ######!

Now that its rip tide season here in Phuket, I'm very concerned. Are these strong seas gonna rip off these speedos? Will these now speedo-less walruses need my help when their struggiling for the shore? Will I have the strength and mental fortitude to grab onto these hairy varments and rescue their speedo-less asses?

Time will tell. God grant me the power for if I fail, natural selection has done its course, and the world will be be short another speedo-wearing beast.

    God grant me moral indifference.

    :o:D

  16. Of course there are good men in Thailand just as there are good men in other countries. And of course there are good women, vice versa, etc. Successful relationships/marriages in Thailand are based on a few major factors (which can be applied to men and women):

    1) Loyalties: Will your spouse remain loyal to you in heart and mind when family pressure begins to arise (or will they abide dear ol' mom's every command)

    2) The independence of your spouse (Was your spouse sleeping in their parent's bed when you first met? Does your spouse have to support their family?)

    3) Money Issues (Whether or not this is important to you, it may be important to the spouse or their family)

    4) Does your spouse have an alcoholic Uncle? (Speaking from experience...beware of these lurking time bombs)

    5) Are you willing to be separated from your family and do they fully support your decision to live in a foreign country? Guilt can ruin anyone.

As for having kids...educating your child may be the reason for you having to leave Thailand (unless you can afford International School tuition)....Is your spouse willing to relocate? Can they be separated from their family?

As in any cross cultural relationships there are many factors ranging from minor to major that could put strain on a relationship.

Looking at what I wrote...it looks as if family IS the essential factor for relationship bliss. Is your family supportive? Is your spouse's family open minded? Do they hold stereotypical views? Time will only tell.

  17. Grrrr.....

Tell me more about the benefits of a modem/router compared to the USB modem that TT&T provides. I have the USB modem and so far its working good. But I'm not reaching speeds of 50 kb/s. More like 30 kb/s. But I am in Phuket. I have my USB modem hooked up to USB hub with a separate power source which is supposedly better.

What do mean about multiple access points?

    Thanks for the info.

  18. No more speedos please. For those unfamiliar with speedos, they're those tight spandex swimming shorts that professional swimmers wear. It seems like Europeans are the biggest offenders. I can't have one day on the beach without seeing some fat, hideous Europeans prancing around the beach with their balls dragging in the sand.

Are you guys unware that speedos aren't considered casual wear? And as a rule of thumb, perhaps you should be under 80 or 90 kilos when wearing speedos. I understand that many of the speedo wearing europeans are the ones that came here seeking misadventure with ladyboys and are most likely prone to wearing speedos around the house and to business functions. But I have seen some fat older monsters wearing speedos and my lord, I have had nightmares. Children should not have to see this. This may cause irrepable damage in these fresh and innocent minds.

Thus, my proposed legislation for Phuket:

    Artilce 56. Section C-1:

Speedos are banned in all public areas unless worn in a competitive swimming event. All fat Europeans will have their bags searched upon arrival at the airport for evidence of speedos or speedo knock-off products. Any contraband will be confiscated and your name will be recorded in the official "Black Book of Shame".

I request that signs be posted on all beaches warning of the repercussions of wearing speedos and have "Speedo patrol officers" working around the clock keeping our beaches free from lewd, and perverse savages who fail to abide and comply to the "Speedo Laws".

If you want to wear speedos, go back to the mediteranean or where ever they condone such sick and twisted behavior. Keep our beaches clean and Speedo-free!

    That is all.

  19. Hey BUTTERFLY.

What company provides ISDN? I'm on-line nearly 24 hours a day? Does ISDN have reasonable unlimited hours packages?

Basically we try to make do with what we can get...and outside of Bangkok that sort of optimism is needed because when it comes to internet companies nothing is as it seems.

Its not easy to try every option because every province operates differently and its quite difficult for a non-speaking Thai person to seek out the information they need. Most of my Thai friends cannot find the answers to my questions. My Thai GF can't always find the information I request. And google can sometimes fail me.

So when your S.O.L. you tend to latch on to whatever you can find at the moment, otherwise you're increasing blood pressure and melting synapses would cause a sudden bout of insanity resulting in some form of road rage with 2 or 3 tuk-tuk drivers laid out on the pavement and the police beating you with big sticks.

"Serenity now. Serenity now". An important mantra and chant to mumble when things fail to materialize in the way you had hoped.

  20. Greetings all. Long time reader, first time postee. I signed up for the good ol' TT&T ADSL 1000 baht/month deal (through Hi-Net) a week ago in Phuket. It has been going relatively good as long as I kept my downloading times to non-peak hours (after midnight, or 6 am and beyond). But the conection has been down for a day or so. Does this happen often? I can connect now, but websites time out or take 10 minutes to load.

On another note, I've been talking to the Hi-Net engineer in Bangkok and he says that they minimize their international bandwith. 80% is devoted to local use and only 20% to International. No wonder p2p networks and other international web necessities are so sluggish. I asked him to increase the International bandwith and he said he would, but when I talked to him a few days later he said he hasn't done it yet. He's a real nice guy and completely honest. So maybe if we all call him and *beg* him to increase the international bandwith for us poor, feeble-minded ex-pat exiles he would.

Here's his number: 026-614-1250. Remember be nice or he will screw us. I think if we put some pleasant pressure on him he MAY cave in. I guess its worth a shot but I am quite aware of what the outcome will likely be.

    Cheers,

    Phuket mp3 junkee
