  1. If you feel so aggrieved it is surprising you stay, unless there are actually overwhelming compensations you do not mention. Also if everuthing were fair, everything would have to be ordered (contolled) and regulated which would hardly be fun. Do you not like the unexpected? Imagine the Tories winning the majority of seats in Scotland at the next election and Wee Krankie losing hers.
  2. If a guest is someone who is well behaved, is that not how you would wish to be seen in Thailand and even in whichever EU member state you choose to pay you social security.
  3. The issue of insurance bothers me. I am planning to apply to change from a visa exempt entry (with extension) to a Non-O with an extension based on retirement. Will I need insurance or does the application for the Non-O obviate the need?
  4. Djokovic, has had covid and so qualifies for a medical exemption from vaccination according to Australian rules and as now declared by the Australian judge. He is rich but he is a very pleasant down to earth man.
  5. Would not a more fitting punishment be to be pulled around the prison courtyard by the hair until bald?
  6. Giving in to ideological fanatics only strengthens their ability to terrorise the population and spread their geographical reach. As always with terrorists they target the religious and the teachers and try to prevent children, especially girls, going to school. All schools have military guards outside. Spent a week, before Covid, driving around the south. Talked to a number of soldiers in their makeshift camps in temples etc including a Border Police colonel who was retiring having spent his whole career fighting the insurgents. The grunts are all volunteers, seem to be well trained, polite and friendly.
  7. Have you not noticed the treasure and brain power invested recently in early planning for colonies on Mars? The approach to "climate change" is the same as towards Covid. No consideration of the cost benefit of alternatives; simply an all out frenzy by fanatics who have scared others into thinking that the end of the world is nigh.
  8. Are authorities in the other jurisdictions being less draconian than in Thailand? Certainly not in France and Malta. What does surprise is the visa rating for Thailand versus Malaysia, unless Malaysia has closed its borders since Covid. It is odd that the article says one can live in Thailand on 33,000 THB a month and yet the minimum immigration wishes to see to renew a retirement extension is 65,000 per month.
  9. if you qualify for a long stay visa they are provided.
  10. If the technology is better and the price competitive people will choose, but I object to coercion. And assuming a moral point of view with regards engines is similar to assuming it on homosexuality or prostitution.
  11. Of course there are winners, not so much between countries as most governments have shown that they love being able to scare and manipulate their population and the main media including social media are having a field day amplifying the scare and censoring any one who might question the "Right Way of Thinking". Omnicron is no more serious a disease than the flu or any other number of conditions. The issue is that as it is new not many have as yet built immunity so many will catch it. If there are no restrictions, of the millions who catch it, some will have serious symptoms and a few will die - but fewer for example than die on Thai roads every year (REMEMBER - everyone dies sometime, medicine does not save lives, it may postpones death) - so for a few weeks or even months more people than average will be off work and seeking a doctor's appointment, but after that people will have built up there immune system and be able to withstand further rounds. The alternative is continuous Anutin television appearances scaring people and forbidding them from this and that.
  12. Perhaps he had originally wanted to be a policeman. Top policemen in Thailand are on public record as saying the law does not apply to them.
  13. you may not have noticed but muslim extremists are waging a terror campaign in the south; the army is a disciplined force that can be used whenever there is an emergency - have you not noticed that everytime there is a flood, a fire, or need of extra resources it is the army that provides this? You may have a short memory but there have been numerous skirmishes with Laos, Cambodia and Burma. And if the army were abolished a new unifrom would have to be found for senior officials.
  14. Indeed. I doubt the author understands the meaning of cachet if he thinks a mass invasion of weekenders increases the cachet of what was a quiet peaceful little known seaside resort. In 1975 it had cachet.
  15. strange how the OP confounds "popular" with "corrupt" or "vote buying" when referring to Taksin. As to the F35, a sale is unlikely. Thai foreign policy is/will be to steer a line between USA and China, so not a good ally Even if a good ally, how can Thailand help? Therefore unless under threat itself no need. How can you trust Thai politicians, generals, pilots to not donate a 'plane to China in exchange for a luxury retirement? Diplomatic way to refuse is to say sale will be considered once Thailand has paid for 16 pilots to be capabe of flying it and ground crew to maintian it. The internal squabbles and skills required are likely to mean a decision need never be taken.
  16. As has been said by others above, it depends on the background and educational level of the girl and her family and importantly on the girl herself. It also extends to friends. A small group of girls, including my wife, who were at school together some 40+ years ago gathered for lunch or occasionally a few days out of town every few months, before covid. Some are rich some are well known but all are very nice. We only moved here in August, before that we would come for visits and when here I was always included, the only husband or man to participate. I let them order the food, but they alway sask me to choose the wine. Most have limited English but all make an effort. The cost is shared equally or almost as one of them frequently brings her adult daughter and somehow we all end up paying for her. Most grumble but dare not condemn the behaviour. She takes the view, common among many Thais, that friend and connections should be happy to be asked to be useful.
  17. It should read ... port to allow Thai fruit imports. Thailand is highly unlikely to export fruit from China tot eh rest of the world. The standard of English is depressing and yet many on TV complain about poor English among Thais. They should set the example. At the sports club of which I am a member many Thai adults speak to their young children in English, sometimes well, othertimes less so but they are trying.
  18. it must be recounted live, preferably with a drink to hand. Of course that could be arranged ...
  19. We drove to Ayuthaya (from central Bangkok) for the Amazing Thailand Countdown. Tight access - needed negative test + double vaccination to get in - and probably therefore very few people, about 200 within the grounds plus 100 officials of various descriptions. A good show, music, dancing, Kon, choir, and very good fireworks. We were given 5 x 20 Baht coupons each to spend on the stands within th eenclosure mainly selling traditional Thai food and drink (no alcohol). At least with so few people getting out of town at the end was quick. Driving from Bangkok att eh end of the elevated expressway there were signs saying the road lights would not be switched on because the lamps had been stolen. Indeed on the way back it was dark. Seems quite extraordinary - one would need a crane to reach the lamps, unless they were stolen before they could be installed. Has anyone seen notices of similar thefts?
  20. Many countries, including the USA, either ban or impose strict conditions including registration on foreign funding. Also in the USA one can find out a great deal of information on "not for profit" or charitable organisations (which includes NGOs) such as amount and source of income, spending, salary levels, promotional spend etc. Here I do not know but doubt it. I think it is quite reasonable to ban all overseas funding of an organisation that seeks to influence the policies of a government and to deny visa to foreigners seconded or hired to work for such an organisation. S pu or impose strict con
  21. do you know the shaggy dog story about the man lost in the desert who found a cricket ball?
  22. If everyone had to have healthcare cover from the time of birth thre would be no pre-existing conditions. For the premiums to be affordable the range of treatements/procedures covered would be strictly defined an the cost of treatment including physician fees controlled. In such a case there is no reason why there could not be competing providers, no need for government to run the system; it would probably simply ban everyone from leaving their house.
