Officials of the Nopparat Thara - Moo Koh Phi Phi park authority held a crisis meeting yesterday where they were told that the bay has been ravaged by too much tourism. Thechook
ravaged by too much tourism. But still TAT pushes for more tourists where are they going to go, Pattaya is bursting at the seams, packed to the rafters according to TAT so can't fit in there. Phuket also is smashing all records and crammed full along with Bangkok. Might have to start shipping all the tourists to Isaan.
impulse
30 minutes after they open it up again, it will be thrashed. A few months closure can't mitigate the damage done by decades of abuse. Especially if they're still going for numbers in their tourism schemes, and nobody's willing to invest in maintaining the resource.
craigt3365
They just don't know how to manage natural resources. And only care about money. Such a shame.

So, is it closed to tourists, or is it closed to everybody? "Ravaged by too much tourism"? More like ravaged by too many Thais who couldn't care less about the environment! One thing is for sure - TAT will still make an announcement that tourism figures have gone through the roof during the same period. When the international airlines start cutting the number of flights into Thailand because they are only half full, somebody might wake-up. webfact
Maya Bay in ‘restoration period’ next June to September, but not closed to visitors Shela Riva Tour boats will not be able to anchor at Maya Bay from June-September next year, but the beach itself will not be closed to visitors. Photo: Jeffry Ng Darwis / Flickr PHUKET: The Chief of the Hat Nopparat- Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park Mr Worapot Lomlim has confirmed to The Phuket News today (Sept 29) that Maya Bay at Koh Phi Phi Don will go into a “restoration period” from June until September next year by not allowing boats to access that bay. However, he has also confirmed that the beach itself will not be closed to visitors, as they will still be able access the beach via an alternative route. “It was decided in a meeting with national park officials yesterday (Sept 28) that Maya Bay will go into a restoration period for about three months, from June to September, or thereabouts,” said Mr Worapot. Then the beach will still be overcrowded and full of trash just the coral will be safe. Guess they haven't realized coral takes more than 4 months to regrow
Metapod
the biggest problem the hundreds of boats all dropping anchors and destroying the coral. they just need to get some buoys out there and have reduce all the anchor dropping. it is such a simple thing but would make a big change on it's own. zaZa9
They dont anchor...they all drive up onto the sand ... This is simply 'low , rough season', that attracts small numbers anyway , being rebranded as some sort of environmentally friendly 'restoration period' ...even a 12 year old would know 4 months of ( partial !?) rest does virtually nothing for ecosystems... Oziex1
These comments are in fact code for the upcoming rise in the rates to bring your boat full of tourists to the bay. Any time of year. Edited October 1, 2017 by Oziex1
quadperfect
Just levy a tax and limit the numbers. Cause nothing will recover in low season with alternate routes. Geeze

Also go check out any of the popular dive spots. 100 boats all drop their own anchors daily. There are some real easy common sense fixes that would do wonders.
