BANGKOK: -- All temples in Bangkok have been told to ban the sale of amulets or Buddha images on temple grounds and to stop allowing posters selling amulets or Buddha images to be put up on temple grounds.

The tough restriction on the sale and advertisements of amulets or Buddha images on temple grounds was meted out by Phra Promdilok, the abbot of Wat Sam Phraya, in his capacity as the chief monk of Bangkok.

The restriction order cited that there were people capitalizing on the religious beliefs of people for vested interest by advertising the magical powers of their amulets or Buddha images in a way which goes against the true teachings of Buddhism and misleads the public.

This is a BIG business, wonder how this will pan out.

Pre sales for the higher standard metals used like silver and gold always command a premium and the resale is often very rewarding in places like Pantip in Nontaburi where a whole floor is dedicated to the sales and collecting of these amulets.

Wow, a hard blow to many smaller temples that basically survive and/or raise money to upgrade/renovate/support and so on by selling amulets.
Just look at Wat Arun where they are selling amulets... some of the amulets are sold support to naval soldiers and they have other amulets that are sold to help finance education for underprivileged children!
I have amulets that were sold to help raise money to buy equipment like ballistic west's for the border police in Northern Thailand and I have a Buddha image that was sold to raise money to buy new equipment to the laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Chang Mai University... but hey, what if Thai people just stopped donating money to the temples and instead start pay taxes like in the west and then the government could hand out money for those things instead... maybe he would change his mind then to that the temples sell amulets to raise money!?

2 other good examples are Luong Phor Khoon and Luang Thama Ha Bua that raised lots of money for many different causes by selling amulets and other stuff!
