webfact
Indian loan sharks arrested in Ang Thong - but many escape Pictures (2): TNA Military and internal security agencies arrested two Indian loan sharks preying on and threatening victims at Ang Thong market. Arrested yesterday were Siri Ram, 38, and Banresh, 27 who were on collection rounds when they were caught. Evidence in the form of 4,970 baht and two mobile phones were confiscated. The arrests follow numerous complaints about loan sharking on the 1111 government hotline. But many others got wise to the impending arrests and fled the area, reported TNA. One trader said that 20% interest was charged. The men would charge 200 baht a day on a loan as little as 5,000 baht and if they didn't get their money they would make threats of physical violence. Some borrowers who couldn't pay had fled the area in fear, she said. The suspects played dumb saying they couldn't speak Thai. They claimed they were clothes sellers. But they had been watched over a period of time and were taken away to Muang Ang Thong police for prosecution. TNA said that the men were part of widespread loan sharking operations in Ang Thong, Suphanburi, Singburi and Suraburi. Some other arrests have resulted in deportations but more people are being investigated as complaints pour in.
