Unpaid debts drive father to kill family

An indebted father apparently shot dead his wife and all three children before committing suicide inside their luxury home.

All five members of the family were found dead in their beds yesterday morning without any trace of a struggle.

The tragedy took place as breadwinner Boonchai Surawuthipong, 49, was clearly worried that his debtor would harm his children.

In one of the notes he left, Boonchai said a man called "Choosaeng" had ordered a mafia gang to abduct his children in a bid to demand repayments.

Boonchai also left a suicide note: "Dad and mom, I am so sorry for causing you problems all along. I have made several wrong decisions. I am so sorry that I haven't repaid you for what you have done for me. Now, I've decided to take my family with me because of debts."

According to police, Boonchai borrowed 800 million baht from a bank to expand his factory many years ago. Later, he needed a further 130 million baht and Choosaeng offered to help him secure the loan for a service charge of at least 4million baht.

Boonchai obtained the loan but had yet to pay Choosaeng any of the money.

"We are going to do a background check on Choosaeng," said Police Colonel Charn Saengsiangfa, a superintendent at the Metropolitan Police Division.

At the time of Boonchai's death, his luxury mansion had just been completed and still needed some more interior decorating. Many luxury cars were parked inside the compound.

All three children of Boonchai and his wife Penphimon, 40, had studied at Bangkok Patana School.

They were five-year-old Panich, 15-year-old Nattamon, and 18-year-old Nattanich.

The bodies of Boonchai, Penphimon and Panich were found in the same bed. Nattamon and Nattanich died in their own beds in two different bedrooms.

Servant Poon Chanhom, 50, said he and a housemaid immediately alerted police after finding the whole family dead.

Poon had worked for Boonchai for a long time, first as a driver then as a handyman when his sight deteriorated.

"My employer was a good, kind-hearted man," Poon said.

According to Poon, Boonchai used to operate a small perfume-oil factory. Buoyed by bright business prospects two years ago, Boonchai decided to buy a 20-rai plot of land and built a large factory and a luxury house.

The house was only just completed and Boonchai took his wife and children to live there two weeks ago.

Bangkok Patana School manager Pornpimon Charoen said she knew all three of Boonchai's children.

"But we never knew about their family's financial problems," she said, adding the family was never late in paying tuition fees.

A rather insensitive non sequitur from Khun Pornpimon I think.

Claim in suicide note denied

A man identified in a suicide note as the reason an indebted businessman killed his family and himself has denied the claim.

Boonchai Surawuthipong, his wife and three children were found dead in their beds in their luxury Bangkok home on Tuesday.

A suicide note written by Boonchai claimed a man known as "Choosaeng" was going to harm his children if he did not pay him Bt5 million.

The money was a fee for arranging a business loan for Boonchai. The note said Boonchai was unable to meet the payment.

Klong Tan police inspector Lt-Colonel Wisit Muensuwan said yesterday the man reported to police at 2am and denied making threats.

Wisit said Choosaeng requested his name be withheld because of concern it would harm his work as a financial adviser. He visited in the early morning to avoid the news media.

Choosaeng told police he met Boonchai twice and no threats had ever been made, according to Wisit.

With Choosaeng's help, Boonchai secured a 130-million baht loan to expand his factory. Boonchai's note claimed a commission of 5 million baht was owed.

Wisit said Choosaeng did admit to asking repeatedly for the payment. "But he denies he resorted to making threats," Wisit said.

Klong Tan police superintendent Colonel Sukhun Pornmai said the deceased's relatives did not suspect any foul play.

They said Boonchai was a hard-working family man and believed the deaths were a case of murder-suicide triggered by stress, according to investigator Lt-Colonel Parinya Wongkla.

"Boonchai was described as a man who took things very seriously," Parinya said.

A source said Boonchai was paying significant sums in daily interest on loans and his wife had suffered trading losses on the stock market.

Funerals were held at a Bangkok temple yesterday.

No foul play suspected in murder-suicide

Police are waiting for forensic test results to wrap up the case of an indebted businessman who killed his family and then took his own life.

Klong Tan police investigator Lt-Colonel Parinya Wongkla said that after inquiries with the deceased's relatives, officers believed that severe stress led Boonchai Surawuthipong to murder his wife and three children before committing suicide. The family was found dead in their beds in their luxury Bangkok home on Tuesday.

"We are awaiting results of forensic tests for gunpowder on the deceased's hand and on the handwriting in the suicide note only to support our assumption," Parinya said yesterday.

He said neither Boonchai's relatives nor the man he had blamed in a suicide note were suspects.

Boonchai's suicide note claimed that a man he identified only as "Choosaeng" was going to harm his children if he did not pay him 5 million baht.

"We don't think the man is related to the murder-suicide. He told officers that he had avoided meeting anyone because he is afraid of the deceased's relatives, although the relatives told police they didn't know Choosaeng," Parinya said.

According to the officer, the relatives said Boonchai was a hard-working family man who always took things very seriously. They also believed the deaths were a case of murder-suicide triggered by stress from Boonchai's business, which was not going so well.
