(Reuters) - Disgraced USA Gymnastics ex-team doctor Larry Nassar has been removed from a federal prison where he has been held, records showed on Sunday, less than a month after his lawyers alleged he was assaulted.

Nassar was at a federal transfer facility in Oklahoma City after being removed from a penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona, Federal Bureau of Prisons records showed. It was not clear to which prison he would be sent.

Last year, Nassar, 55, was given an effective life sentence by a Michigan court for sexually abusing young female gymnasts entrusted to his care. He is also serving a 60-year sentence for a federal child pornography conviction.

Nassar's lawyers said in a legal filing last month that the former doctor was assaulted soon after being released into the general population at the medium-security Tucson prison.

Officials from the Federal Bureau of Prisons and lawyers for Nassar were not immediately available to comment.

At his sentencing hearing in Michigan, more than 150 of his victims gave harrowing accounts of abuse at the hands of Nassar, who served as the program's physician through four Olympic Games and also worked at Michigan State University.

I am very surprised that he was ever released into the general population.  You don't have to be a criminologist or a forensic psychologist or whatever to know how that will play out.

I remember a criminal lawyer once told me that on a tour of a prison, he noticed that the sexual offenders were incarcerated separately from the general population.

My older and more cynical part of my mind wonders if someone had made a "mistake."  Admittedly, I can't help but to lack sympathy for Nassar.  He committed not just a gross violation of professional responsibility, but also highly violated basic decency and the trust of his patients, which I understand were all or mostly minors.

Disgusting!

Although, I do hope the facility can keep their "big house" in order for their own sake.

History shows that even those tough boys in the Orange suits don't like those who abuse children, even if sweets or medals go along with abuse. Similar to Catholic Priests (Oh No! Father whats-his-name would never do that). Doctor has a choice, Prison general population or solitary confinement. Free running shoes.

Yes, a “mistake by his jailers” Maybe Nasser got mouthy with them? Since all the guards have to do is open a door to prove they are all that protects the predator from becoming the prey.

There was a coverup from US Gynastics association and University.

Nassar was sentenced to state prison forn rapes. He is in the Fed for kiddie porn.

US Federal prisons paedos are "attack on sight", if one does not  you get targeted to be messed up by other inmates, locked up with killers doing life. They get 5 years for another murder in prison it only improves their reputation. This guy is notorious he can only survive in protective custody or seg unit (i.e. The Hole)

The US must be a really backward place. The UK has it's own 'pedo' prisons. Purpose built places that are run more in line with psychiatric hospitals, for the many thousands of sex offenders that are jailed every year. The problem and the cost is huge. These people are not mixed in with the general prison population for the very reasons you describe.

It has one prison, repurposed -not built- for sex offenders.  The total offenders being just over 300 in the UK.

Both facts can be googled in one click.

In Canada, this guy would be held in protective custody for his entire time in provincial jail (23 hours per day, 1 hr alternating each day where he could get “yard” time or use the pay phones and shower).  PC in provincial jails as a sex offender isn’t fun - the COs hate them, gen pop inmates curse and spit at them during transport to court, and they are on ranges where most of the other inmates are in PC because they were bullied off the general pop ranges.  (And nobody bullies harder than someone who was bullied themself.)  But the tight lockdown schedule keeps them safe from everything except self-harm.

Inmates stay in provincial jails for sentences less than 2 years, or until their trial is finished if they get sentenced to 2+.  For longer sentences they go to the federal system.  Federal prison ranges from SHU maximum security, where you’re shackled every time you leave your cell, to minimum security camps, where you live in a townhouse and can sign out to go fishing for the afternoon at the Rideau Canal.  Where you get assigned depends on the length of your sentence, your likelihood of trying to escape, and the risk to the public if you did escape - plus a bunch of psychometric sorcey, and however the warden feels on the day he signs your transfer form.

In Canada, Naser would have spent his trial in a cramped cell for 23 hours per day, probably holding 3 people but designed for 1, and given his size and charges he’d be sleeping on the floor by the toilet.  The guards would be cursing him and denying him any reading material except for whatever the chaplain insisted he got.

Once in the federal system, his background and risk level would make him a prime candidate for a minimum security camp.  In Canada he’d get nowhere near the sentence he got in the US, but with that notoriety he’d still draw about 12-20 years.  Because of that length he’d get sent to a medium facility to start.  They’d put him in a prison that wasn’t solely dedicated to sex offenders, but probably has a lot of them due to the programs they offer.  He’d have a job, TV, and even a PlayStation if he could afford it.  Other inmates would give him a wide berth, but he’d meet other diddlers and rape hounds and play cards with them.  Eventually he’d make it to a camp, where the inmates and guards call each other by first names and he could go fishing.

If he was ever classified as an escape risk, or a violent risk, then his life would be very different.  He’d be locked up in a cell close to Paul Bernardo and they’d swap stories and jailhouse recipes.  But without a life sentence or violent crime past, he’d never see anything worse than medium.  Depending on the facility though, his notoriety could get him targeted, and in that case he’d be in the federal version of PC.  Same daily lockdown, but in a cell for one and he can keep his tv and PlayStation.

so, how about billing the inmates?  attaching future wages?  of course this can lead to more corruption and abuse by the system

It will be virtually impossible for them to find a prison where he will not be made to feel at home, by the other inmates. He will always be given "special treatment" wherever he goes. Child molesters are not held in high regard in the big pen, and he has alot of "good times" and plenty of his own molestations ahead of him, to look forward to. He got what he deserved. And more! Good, good. None of our hearts bleed for this predator worm.
