A 39-year-old Thai worker was injured in Israel during fierce fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza on Sunday.

The worker, identified as Chaiya Mahakote of Udon Thani province, was wounded at his hip by stray shrapnel. He was rushed to hospital in Tel Aviv and was now under recovery, but continues to experience some pain at the site of his wound.

Chaiya’s plight came to light after a Facebook page of Thais working in Israel reported the incident. The page posted photos of Chaiya lying and bleeding on a floor. A photo showed a friend trying to stop the bleeding at his hip.

During the weekend, it was reported that Israeli aircraft and tanks had conducted more than 350 strikes in the strip, while militants from Hamas and the separate Palestinian Islamic Jihad fired close to 700 rockets and mortars. Both sides entered a ceasefire on Monday, suspending some of the deadliest fighting since a war in 2014.

The Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv assigned its consul, who brought along senior monks of Sangha Thanmara temple in Buengkarn province to visit Chaiya in hospital. The monks were visiting the country as part of an embassy project.

Chaiya, who was working in an orange field in Ohad in the south of Israel when the incident happened, told the visitors he was now in a better condition and had received good medical treatment.

Meanwhile Chak Samutklin, a labour official, revealed that Chaiya went to work in Israel under the Thailand Cooperation on Placement of Workers project of the Labour Ministry’s Employment Department.

Chak yesterday went to visit Chaiya’s mother, Bualoi, 68 to inform her about labour rights and compensation her son will receive from a ministry fund as he was working legally in Israel.

Bualoi said she learnt about her son’s injuries after her daughter showed her photos from Facebook. At first she was afraid to look at the photos and kept asking how serious his wounds were.

“I’m quite relieved that my son is now recovering and has his employers and friends to take care of him,” she said.

Chaiya had worked overseas in Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Israel, she said.

The Thai Embassy in Israel and the Labour Office have prepared evacuation plans for Thais in case of an emergency in the volatile region.

Another Thai worker, Payab Kongchuay, who went to work in Israel under the same project, died of heart failure. The Labour Ministry will take care of the process of brining home his body, as well as compensation for his family.

He's bound to recuperate really fast now he has monks there to speed his recovery. I wonder if they'll hold an inquiry into whether he was wearing the correct amulet at the time.

I didn't realise that Thais were that adventurous, I wouldn't expect to bump into one in Israel.

I doubt when he signed up to be sent to work there as a laborer that he was thinking about all the exciting adventures he might have.

It looks as if he’s been in some interesting places ... Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Israel ... so he seems quite happy to travel and make more money than at home ... otherwise he wouldn’t do it.

Having visited IL recently yes, there are many Thai working in agrariculture-even some kibbutzes and other jobs. Also thousands of Pinoy in service jobs. They more or less replace the Palestinians who are left behind impenetrable walls. Prices in IL are higher as in EURope.

But as has already been stated they are earning multiples of what they would at home.

Yes it's sort of relative as they earn less than the locals but much more than in LOS and he looks very jolly with his group of friendly monks.

But let's spare a thought for the poor Israelies murdered by the religion of peace terrorist groups Hamas Isis Hezbollah all supported by Iran.  The sooner Trump gets involved in Iran the sooner terrorism will stop and Israelies, hard working Thais and visitors can live in peace.

You are 100% correct every visit I make I see more and more Asian faces, and less Arab in service jobs. Generally it is hard for an Israeli to employ a Palestinian as they sort of pose a security risk as difficult to assess if they are dangerous. Plus when Israelies see their brave IDF getting shot and kidnapped the Pallestinans create very bad press for them selves. So would you employ a Pinoy who's greatest risk is seducing the husband, and getting pregnant versus a potential risk of employing  a suicide bomber. Personally, the Pinoy wins hands down so to speak. As to the walls absolutely required to keep the terrorist threat in check, can't beet big well defended walls to stop people getting in just ask President Trump who is protecting American borders with his ambitious security wall.

Also for the Palistinians who are denied their rights, it is an awful situation from both sides.

Yes, it's a very lopsided battle, those Palestinians have and endless supply of rocks to throw at the few Apache attack helicopters provided by USA!

Palestinians get as much aid from Muslim Nations as Israel does from the USA

No one born in Israel is denied rights, but many who claim to be Palestinians (Who received lots of aid) are not in fact Palestinian as born in other countries.

Israel whilst not perfect by any means including the torture of British soldiers and booby trapping their bodies or the use of terrorist tactics such as blowing up the St David’s hotel to establish the state in the first place. There is blame on all sides. However, it is the only real democracy in the region. Plus they don’t cut people’s heads off stone them to death, or throw them off buildings for not conforming to the barbaric rules of the ‘religion of peace’. Think Gays, Christians Yizadies. In fact Israel is tolerant of other religions. Further they treat women as equals unlike all their neighbours.

So perhaps they deserve some credit for in the end carving out a democratic country that was pretty much uninhabitable desert before the state of Israel was created?

Including a lot of tactical military equipment and training from their partners in Iran.

Yea they’ve got Apache AH64s some Bell OH58s some Sikorsky 63s and black hawks. They need them

when most of their neighbours want them obliterated!

if you’ve ever been hit by a rock you will know how lethal they feel.

Unless you were a migrant worker in Israel , besides your regular anti Semitic posts , for the life of me I can not see how you know with such certainty how Israelis view or treat migrant workers , but if you insist on posting rubbish, let’s also look at how thai treat migrant workers or any of Israeli neighbors treat migrant workers, mind you Muslim brothers

In my experience Israel treats migrant workers much better than other countries in the region and they are protected to some degree with regard to Health and Safety and wages protection. When we worked on projects in some Arab states there was a low value put on a life and if a safety measure cost more than that value it appeared the risk such as falling from height was not mitigated, as virtually no penalty for a migrants death just a cheque sent. Those who have never set foot in Israel or the wider Middle East should perhaps visit and actually see what goes on, they would then be better placed to comment. Much better than sitting at a keyboard in their bedrooms waiting for their mum to tell them their tea is ready.

Israel has the right to defend itself including defending the multitude of different religions who are free this allowed to follow their desired religious beliefs.

Unfortunately, there are few states close by who don’t persecute non Muslim beliefs via their ‘religion of peace’. Syria was more tolerant of Christians (Yazidis) than most and is still under areas controlled by Assad but now torn apart largely by ISIS and fundamentalist backed groups (Hamas ISIS ).

Unfortunately, the socialist press and their followers such as Corbyn in the UK seem to think the Palestinians are like cuddly teddy bears that we should hug and embrace, when in fact they are not and send tickets into Israel daily, their sponsors such as Iran want the destruction of Israel at any cost.

Not everything Israel does is perfect but try walking around any other Middle East state wearing western clothes or a cross and you will soon regret the decision, or may not even live to regret it!
