When I get my replacement I need to check it works properly by going to several countries and that may take some time. As I have pointed out - they do not have to issue him with a new passport - they can issue him with travel documents that allow him only to travel to Thailand Embassies do this every single day. For someone who knows Russia as well as I do, it is absolutely not surprising that he was robbed. Surely, he was an object of special attention from local mafia the moment he stepped on sacred Russian land. Thus, I do not believe that it is something self-organized. Thaksin, who has been living in exile since a coup last year ousted him as prime minister, had entrusted his briefcase to an aide sitting at a nearby table as they had a meal Monday at the McDonald's restaurant on the Arbat, said his lawyer, Noppadol Pattama, in Bangkok. When the party got up to leave, they found that Thaksin's briefcase, with his passport and about $9,200 in dollars and rubles, had been snatched, he said. Kommersant reported Saturday that the amount of cash in the briefcase was closer to $20,000. It said the briefcase had also contained a digital video camera and a digital camera. A woman who answered the phone at the restaurant confirmed the robbery but directed all other questions to McDonald's head office. Officials there were unavailable for comment. Thaksin, a billionaire, was in Moscow to accept an honorary degree in science from the Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics. Noppadol said the Thai Embassy in Moscow had helped Thaksin, issuing him a new passport and other temporary travel documents. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the ministry had not received full information about the theft and as a result was not in a position to comment. A city police spokesman said he could not immediately comment on the case. The Thai Embassy could not immediately be reached for comment. Thaksin made a fortune in the telecoms business before entering politics, and has been living the life of an idle billionaire since losing his post, traveling between a residence in London and various countries in Asia. (Yes, they tried very hard to nail him as you say but no substantial results as you admit). I saw an interview with Mark Faber on CNBC, where he very respectfully talked about khun Thaksin. Now, in fact, I never saw anybody from business world (outside Thailand) ever spoken negatively about khun Thaksin. The reason why I brought about the name of Mark Faber is because he is a very well known investor (and world known book writer) based in Thailand. By the way, his interview was after the coup. Even the opponents of Thaksin concede that he had widespread support in the rural population, although they would question the way this support was obtained.In practice this support for Thaksin could also be found in the urban lower middle and working classes.Nevertheless you seem to be saying that this was obtained by Thaksin financed mobs, perhaps threatening those who had different opinions.I'm not for a moment suggesting the TRT didn't have a thuggish presence in some places, but it's absurd to suggest that that strong arm tactics had a major influence on the rural vote. I am afraid your version of the rural majority's view is rather eccentric and would not be supported by any detailed analysis of opinion.Having said that if your Thai family could see through Thaksin's rather cynical strategy, then good for them but it's fanciful to think this reflects the majority perception in the countryside (leaving aside traditional Democrat strongholds).
