Help! I Want Wireless For My Home.

Featured Replies

Sorry if this question has been raised before in this forum, I just couldnt find the answers I was looking for.

I currently have ASDL (Maxnet) at home hooked up to my laptop which has 802.11b/g via ethernet cable.

I would like to have a wirless connection. And one day I might buy a desktop so networking equipment is required. (?) Questions......

1. The house Im in has concrete walls/floors. Which wireless router is the most suitable?

2. How easy is it to set up? Is it plug and play stuff?

3. Cost?

4. Where from? Im in Chiang Mai.

I have heard Billion is reliable and good.

thanks

DB

The actual setup is easy. Linksys, for example has a website that will guide you through the process and help with the proper settings. All you have to do is plug your ADSL into the router, then any desktop you have into one of the other plugs on the router. Your laptop should pick up the signal anywhere it's in range. It's a little bit more difficult if you want to secure the network, but not much more so. The main problem that you'll run up against is finding a wireless router with enough of a range to cover your house. You may need to have some sort of a booster.

I installed cheap wireless router in a typical apartment and had no problem with coverage. When I tried doing the same thing at my father's place (5500 sq. ft.home with steel beams and concrete walls), the signal from the small router didn't carry very far. I could only pick up the signal in the adjacent rooms.

If I may attach my question to this thread.

I wonder if anyone is using an apple laptop with apple's airport express wireless router. I'm not using mine because right now I don't need it (and don't want to give up even a bit of speed/connectivity/or whatever).

But soon I will be moving to a bigger 2 storey house and will want to use it, and my question is - is the apple router as good as one can get for a 3 bedroom house - and what's the best location?

Hi,

I only use the Airport card in my Apple laptop, so can't tell how the Apple router will work out...but...

Try the Apple website, they have a discussion section which might give you the info you need - if not, you can post a question yourself.
