Tat To Pull Out Of Longstay Company

The Tourism Authority of Thailand plans to sell its 30% stake in Thai Longstay Management Co (TLM) to create a level playing field for the industry.

Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani wants TLM to be privately-run without state support to be fair to other companies in the same business.

Set up by the Thaksin Shinawatra government to help promote the tourism industry, TLM offers a wide range of privileges to tourists including accident and health insurance, medical services and special care by tourist police.

However, its performance remains poor and its major shareholder, Pol Col Ruamnakorn Tubtimthongchai, had sold off his 50% stake to a number of small investors.

As of yesterday, TLM, which has registered capital of 100 million baht, reported a net loss of 60 million baht.

Pradech Phayakvichien, TAT adviser and director of TLM, said before selling off the shares, TAT will improve TLM's management by focusing mainly on the longstay service and not investing in property projects as planned earlier, he said.

He believes investors would be interested in the company thanks to the potential of the longstay business, whose target group is retirees from developed countries who live on pension funds.

He suggests that tour operators and hotels prepare themselves to serve this group of clients.

Had the Long Stay mob email me ages ago about setting up legal tranferable leases in perpetuity - ie solving home ownership problems here once and for all. Said it was starting in Samui and then spreading nationally. Having TAT onboard naturally this sounded very interesting. When I emailed with questions several times I never received a reply. Don't know if it ever got off the ground, but it was having the government involved that made it interesting as it seemed they were looking for a solution that would benefit all stakeholders. Seems so much for that. :o

I wish they'd just close this and the elite card down.

Like a broken record.

OMG

you rant like a guy looking to jump of a balcony, raging the world is gonna end

this website sure brings out the many whinging foreigners frustrated in their lives living in los

It's easy to get frustrated when you live in Thailand as a Westerner.

But Womble is bang on. Get rid of these two disasterous projects immediately before more of this country's coffers are squandered.

its not even an important news article for anybody

yet you guys are treating it as some opportunity to rant and rage like a couple of negative old whinging farts

and by the way, the countries coffers are being raped, pillaged by the many thai generals along with their lovely bugdet increases.

It certainly could be an important news article for somebody. Who are you to judge?

There's certainly a lot of negatives about these two projects though. Time for both to be scrapped.

longstay is not the elite

at least get your negative comments in tact

longstay is part of a listed company on the set, that is the purpose of the tat having to give a press conference on their shareholding.

and is this news article such a life and death scenerio for your seemingly frustrated life in los?

or are you just using this useless bit of news as an excuse to rant on tv

The only one ranting on this thread is you.

For such a "useless bit of news" you seem to be getting rather worked up about a couple of throwaway comments on it.

Perhaps time for a lie down?

i am enjoying replying to guys like you who use any excuse to rage their negativity on tv

oh

and what happened to this useless bit of news article being soooooo important to you, that now you seemingly whimper in the distance

Not that important to me.

Seems quite important to you though judging by your reaction. Either that or you are delibrately flaming.

No one is using this as an excuse to "rage negativity", whatever that means.

The two projects have been disasters and Womble has every right to voice his disapproval, as have I

Of course you could add something useful to the thread and discuss the merits of Long Stay or the Elite card if you wish the thread to take a more positive tangent.

you two guys are just ranting like rabbid soi dogs overly frustrated in your small lives in los

its humurous for me to reply to you

this news article is a useless bit of space for which both of you have added nothing more than negativity, even bringing other programmes into the fray which have nothing to do with longstay

as for the other programme you speak, then add your negativity on those wasted threads on the subject on tv, for which there are many in the archives

as for longstay, i believe the programme in question was always going to be second best as it charges 40-60 k a year for a service which competes with the retirement visa, and the retirement programme as i believe never charges anything like those amounts, so of course longstay would lose out to the retirement visa for which as of last year had over 12000 retirees all extending their visa's directly from thai immigration.

OMG, you reply to a guy that rants, why do you care.

Want something to rant at...?

Ok try this. Typical of this place - TLM, Elite, Bangkok Fashion Week and on and on, are all examples of everything that could be good here gone wrong.

The locals are very good at telling everybody they are gonna be the hub of this and that - throw a big splashy party and press conference - find a few suckers to pay for it - and then abandon it. Lots of flash - no substance.

What are we the hub of this week? I agree with the guy who said shut them down. They are a complete embarrasment to actual good long term projects based on welcoming foreigners to stay here and spend here over the long term - you know like the new spousal 800,000 baht requirement. Oops, sorry did we not say we can change the rules as we choose to screw more money out of you farangs?

Credibility, trust and transparency (yes I did say transparency) are earned - not bought, bartered or PR'd.

Sooner or late someone will wake up and say "These fancy TAT arrival figures don't seem to match what every business owner connected to the industry is saying. I wonder who does the accounting? More to the point, TAT states that while the arrival figures are up YOY, hotel occupany is down big time because we have so many more hotels." Hmmm. Pretty quick answer and quite frankly almost had me fooled into thinking that all the empty restaurants , hotels around the country were in fact full with all those tourists that are staying in newly built hotels - the ones in places like Vietnam, Malaysia, and others.

Can we get some real data? Actual, verifiable numbers that both the private and public sector can agree on?

Perhaps Mr H can call up a friend and get those across to us by noon?

Anyways, have a good Friday everyone. :o

Based on their website's latest news item (unsurprisingly, there's nothing on TAT dumping them), it's not surprising this company is losing business. Their CEO sounds like a lunatic and their "News Editor" could be replaced by a Bulgarian vagrant teaching ESL at the 123 Language School in order to attract customers with something resembling English....

The Future of Long Stay Tourism

Mrs. Piyapat Suban Na Ayudhya, Chief Executive Officer of Thailand Long Stay Management Co Ltd had voiced out her opinion on long stay tourism policy to some senior management of 30 consumer products companies who gathered at the conference room of Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok on Wednesday 4th of July 2007.

She stated that Thailand right now needs more tourists to spend their long holiday in Thailand than previous time. She pointed out that short stay visit is not a real mean for healthy tourism because the country would have to face a harsh impact that caused by tourism in term of ecology, culture and social.

Mrs. Piyapat Suban Na Ayudhaya, a veteran administrator in hotel business is newly appointed as CEO of Thailand Longstay Management Company Limited (TLM) since last May. Following the company’s reengineering on management to provide and develop new idea on long stay tourism which supported by Tourism Authority of Thailand who holds

shares for 30% of the company, Mrs Piyapat has foreseen the future of long stay tourism in Thailand as not being in easy situation when it has to complete with some other countries in the region such as Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. For example in Vietnam, the authority there seems to provide more special privileges to foreign tourists than rendering to their own citizens. Such policy will induce foreign tourists coming to Vietnam much more than the old time. In case of Singapore, it has an ambitious plan to lease 2 small islands in Malacca Strait which belong to Indonesia to develop as long stay paradise. That would send a tremble to Thai long stay tourism business as well.

“To stand with believing that Thailand has an upper hand in tour business more than any other country in the region would make Thailand move backward or slow to develop their services in tour business” Mrs piyapat stressed. She also added that Thailand should do more in developing its own services in tour business and of course they should take abundant action on long stay tourism and should not underestimate the counterpart.

She also told the conference about the negative outcome of some political situation in Thailand that has harmed the tour business for the time being. She pointed out that short stay tourism seems not to be worried too much with the

situation right now but long stay holiday has to bear the burden as many foreigners may regard Thailand as an unstable country and hardly want to choose Thailand as their long holiday destination. She joked about the military tanks that had rolled from time to time on the street of Bangkok if it intends to add some more souvenirs for tourists or just wants to make Thailand as an amusing country. The only problem she is facing is how she could explain to the foreigners if

Thailand is stable with those tanks. It looks troublesome and needs explanations, Mrs.Piyapat concluded with her speech.

it's taken awhile...

You've got your witty hat on today. That's twice you've made me snigger. Must be all that Japanese porn.

Excuse my ignorance but back on topic, what's the difference between "long stay" and "elite". I think I heard something about long stay but it didn't get much coverage.

If they can't get the english right on something that is 100% aimed at foriegners what can they get right.

Not much as has become quite obvious.

Is better for her to discuss with immigration bureau and relevant agencies in attracting more longstayers and foreign tourist. Tourism industries don't like to listen flip-flop stories. Look at today Bangkok post, AOT might impose aircraft noise fee on passenger and airlines companies.
