BANGKOK (dpa) - A Pakistani drug smuggler died of an overdose after plastic bags of heroin that he had swallowed burst in his stomach, a news report said Wednesday.

Mohammed Ismail was arrested in the departure lounge at Bangkok International Airport last Sunday after police noticed he appeared to be in pain and very nervous and found he had swallowed three kilogrammes of heroin in small plastic bags, according to the report in The Nation newspaper.

Police sent the suspect to Bangkok's Bhumibol Hospital where doctors gave him a laxative to facilitate the elimination of the drug.

Over the next two days he eliminated several heroin-filled bags, but the remaining ones burst early on Tuesday, killing him quickly as the narcotic was absorbed into his bloodstream.
