Ming~Ming
No matter what way you look at it, the Thai government are slowly chipping away at the incentives that attract many of the Farangs to Thailand in the first place. They seem bent on getting rid of the type of Farang who visits Thailand for the ladies and bars. Think about it...First they close the bars early, then arrange high profile random drug tests in bars and night clubs and now they are herding up prostitutes. These are the staple diet of many Farangs who frequent the naughty areas. It is obvious to all that there will always be prostitution in Thailand and although this most recent episode is hardly the death knoll for the whoremonger, surely that day can't be too far away, can it? Perhaps the government should concentrate on getting rid of political corruption, scams and racist double pricing for tourists instead?
castelleone
All that should be said about this topic has already been said. But I think to claim that we farangs did ,,invent,, or ,,bring,, prostitution to Thailand, is a strong and wrong statement. If you know a little bit about Asia and Thailand, you know this has always been as well as in all countries throughout the world. Nevertheless it might be true, that prostitution with farangs got started in a real boom during the Vietnam war.

Bangkokbob
I can see a new visitor to Thailand reading the a news article about the crackdown, and taking a taxi over to Lumpini Park to assist some of those ex government workers. It used to be that as you washed up in Chiang Mia's biggest brothel, you could look out the window at policemen sitting at their desks at Chiang main police station. Prostitution on a larger scale was started about 400 years by Chinese merchants. Having a second wife became a status symbol. Most could not afford several wives so they rented them. And those who could not rent on a monthly basis rented just for the sex. As the the late Thai Prime Minister, M.R. Kukrit Pramoj, stated in a speech to the Thai Parliment, in 1974, "sex is a commodity just like tapico and rice".
flackjacket
I agree with the last entry, "bars" and brothels (even private houses) are in every town and village, have been exclusivly used by Thai males way back into Thailands distant past and sadly are the main source of AIDS in LOS. To use a condom just is not macho- I have witnessed one person this week in our village who is dying of AIDS, not a pretty sight to behold. rcalsop
I hope Thai officials do read those posts, they will then understand the cause of the problem. My opinion is:We foreigners created prostitution at the first place by offering Thai's money they could never make that easy by working regurarly jobs. For example a standard price for one night with a Thai is around 1000-1500 Bht; when if the Thai was just working she/he would make around 6000-10000 Bht/month on a six days week, 8to 10 daily. If you do the Maths you will see that that 6 customers equal a full months salary and they can sleep for the rest of the month! To get out of this: a) Thai goverment should help Thai's get free college education, including free books! Yes, there are a lot of Thai's who can't afford buying their own books and their farmer parents most likely don't want them educated, they want them on the working on the farm! We foreigners must STOP being SO CHEAP and not offer them money for sex. We're the ones to be blamed for prostitution, especially the "savors" foreigners who take care of "poor" Thai's, for the "Thai's" good! The biggest lie ever! Them are just the cheapest of all! Can't get laid and use their little money (because if they had more they would stay at their countries), to CORRUPT Thai's. Especially all these DISGUSTING old men who makes me want to puke everytime I go to Pattaya or BKK. How much of a low estime do U guys have? No one can like you with out your money? NO ONE??? Going the easy way and have sexual partners which you know that they feel disgusted by your touch??? How low is that? Do U deserve that???? Don't U deserve someone who would appreciate U as you are? What's wrong with U? Just try it! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think your opinion comes from a lack of understanding and limited experience of the realities of life .The so called sex industry is and has been present in virtually all human civilisations from the earliest days of our developement . My observations and experience from many countries where I have worked and lived always with local communities in local housing is that the level of the sex trade is constant in all countries , and religions,. The only difference is the hypocracy level , and how concealed or hidden it is , for example in muslim cultures it is well hidden and rarely can the westener see it or understand it . The custom of concubines still permiates the social background in Thailand and the real danger in the crack down is driving the system underground . Think back to the situation in the States and do your home work on which famous cities were founded on Prostitution and the correct open taxation of the trade .....Seattle for example was founded that way and Street lighting , paved streets, theatres, schools and hospitals all came from taxes raised . Crack downs and true controls should be applied and focussed to control child trafficing , sex slaves etc...... keep it open decriminalised and tax it with correct employment benefits for the "workers . You can't possibly believe that foreigners created, or even support the majority of, Thai prostitution! There are brothels in every village, town, and city in this country...and they sure as heck aren't serving farangs. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Filippos has no idea what he is talking about, and clearly knows little of Thailand, just the tourist eye view. The prostitution that the average foreigner sees is merely the tip of the iceberg! The other 9 tenths is hidden behind the Thai facade, and rarely penetrated (if you will pardon the expression) by the visitor, or even the expat. Doctor John
Great stuff, Now I would like to see laws passed that could prosecute customers of the Prostitutes, it is my opinion that many people travel thousands of miles purely to exploit the situation that exists here in Thailand. If prostitution is against the law in Thailand then people are travelling to Thailand to partake in an unlawful act. If they are really serious about cleaning up Thailands image, they will bust some farangs and fine and deport them, it would make world news and send out a message that sex tourists are not welcome here no more. I for one would welcome any laws that made the customer the guilty party. In my opinion people that travel thousands of miles to exploit financially vunerable people, should be made to pay for that crime, cos that is what it is, a crime.
