Background:

University students have emerged as a new force in the antigovernment campaign.

BANGKOK: -- Students from 21 institutes and two schools plan to gather at Makkawan Rangsan Bridge tomorrow to join the People's Alliance for Democracy protest.

A group calling themselves Young PAD plan to meet at 6pm to express their opposition to the government, the group's spokesman Wasan Wanit, said.

Yesterday Silapakorn University's Sanam Chan campus in Nakhon Pathom called for the government to stop using violence to solve the political crisis.

Calling themselves Tab Kaew Alliance, the student group asked the government to withฌdraw charges against the People's Alliance for Democracy's leaders. They also called for the Samak administration to lift the state of emerฌgency in Bangkok.

About 500 students signed a petition that will be sent to Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej.

The PAD rally at Government House has attractฌed a growing number of students from universities including Thammasat, Chulalongkorn, Hua Chiew, Thai Chamber of Commerce, Prasarnmitr and the Rajabhat Institutes.

Some took the stage and gave speeches in front of the cheerฌing crowd while others, like Chulalongkorn's medical students, stayed among protesters at the rally site. "Although we are warned by Education Minister Somchai Wongsawat that we should not get involved in politics, we think it is our duฌty. His speech shows how unfit he is for the post," said a Thammasat student yesterday.

University students joining political turmoils... not a great idea.

No? Why shouldn't they? The tradition in Thailand (and in many other countries) has been that that the students are at the forefront of the protests. The recent tumults represent the exception from the rule.

Notice how the fuedalist-Nation newspaper blames the police (in a subtle way?)

E.G. Army Good! Disciplined, Patronistic, Loyal!!

Police Bad - Thaksinites, Uneducated, Undisciplined, Untrustworthy, Disloyal!!

The Nation is a shameful, disgraceful rag of the priviledged class. Feudal As-wipe in a sense..he, he.

In reality both forces are greedy mafias..

despite the photos and names they carry on their crests. A joke.

The students are a minority this time round. Everyone with half a brain can see this is the sakdida/feudalists trying to erase popluist one-person-one-vote from Thai politics for at leat the next generation. That's why the students, by and large, are staying way frm this.

AND by the way that's why the September 19 STUDENT MOVEMENT was among the VERY FEW with the balls to stand up and critize the 2007 Coup. Where were Sondhi and the other "Democrats" then, Hmm??

I just got this now on SMS, i hope the same doesnt happem as before, as Students can be very naive

Doubt this is naivety, think everyone is aware by now what can happen and this will only bring more students on to the streets, foolhardy courageous or misinformed maybe but not naive.

Students always join political protests - in every country.

What other group of people of voting age (so they care) have the free time to take part in demonstrations, and are naieve enough to think that protesting works.

Not necessarily good for the students (think Tiananmen Square).

A very tragic incident but saying that students(the future of a country) should not be politically involved is incorrect.

Hopefully this is not the start of something worse.

looks like a job done by PAD. so that they can make the ram uni student angry. They have the largest number of student and history of striking against the government.

Kent State comes to mind. It seems that in western countries/cultures, it's the students that do the protesting, being they know everything at such a young age. Here it seems to be mostly adults that do the protesting, and when the younger people get involved it seems strange. It's seems strange to me that is seems strange to others. People are strange...... :o

OHH...REALLY!!!...some "big" people are sometimes like children...happens very often HERE!!

So true - just like the rich chinese-thai 'kid' who ran down the people at that bus stop. Where was the justice there? You're so right.

Bet he had a wristband though..Jing Jing, eh, funcat? Does that make him 'better' than the populist poor people who want a bit of "your" country? The more expensive car one drives and the more yellow one wears...they are just so much more 'worthy' of Thailand aren't they? Is that it???

Yes now just hold your horses, the last newsflash from TV was to state it kindly "a real flop" here in the city where I live young men are shot, and shot at, almost daily, and that just for sending wrong eyes in the direction of the shooters, chances are that this most likely has nothing to do with PAD/PPP but are just the usual young Thai male testosterone madness.

TV dont send news flashes every time a young Thai male gets shot at, maybe TV should have waited to see if this at all is related to the ongoing unrest.

This had crossed my mind after my post.

Lets hope that you are right, otherwise the fan is about to be hit by one almighty amount of sh*t.

Probably an attempt to provoke violence and thus a coup. I would almost think that the PAD has the most to win by shooting students

On the other hand I didn't think thinking ahead for consequences

is DAAD's strong suit either.

This may have been their deluded shot across the bows.

The students normally come out in support of democracy, not against it. This is very tragic. The situation is too volitile for demonstrations.

Democracy sometimes delivers bad government but democracy is as good as it gets - the alternatives almost always (as opposed to sometimes) delivers bad government. If PAD gets control they will put business people, the elite and the population of Bangkok way before the rest of the population. The rich will get even richer, the poor poorer and corruption will simply change hands - not go away!

What ordinary people outside of Bangkok feel is that a corrupt government that helps them is better than any alternative offered by PAD - unless the King stands up and defends his democracy then Thailand will move slowly and inevitably to civil strife of some kind. This will leave the door open for other minorities to wreck havoc....I am so sad for the lovely people of Thailand
