Landlord In Jail

Featured Replies

I have just discovered that my landlord (farang) of the house I rented through an agent here has been arrested and now resides in jail accused of underage sex. I have no idea for how long nor any idea of the veracity of the charges against him, but what concerns me is that he was arrested in a neighbouring property to the one I rent from him.

What bothers me is being shaken down on my return to Thailand by the BIB and becoming a suspect - aka money tree for the BIB, although my only contact with the guy is paying rent and occasional visits to sort minor maintenance issues with the property.

Am I overreacting? If I move I suspect I may lose my 2 months' deposit held by the landlord.....I have no idea how to contact the landlord and the agent isn't the sharpest tool in the box.

He's always been a helpful landlord (whatever his private life may or may not be) and I don't want to leave him in the lurch, but at the same time I don't want to compromise my own position.

Thoughts anyone?

I wouldn't pay the rent until I saved the deposit back for sure, if you are planing on staying however; I would keep the cash readily on hand if the landlord comes looking for it and I'm sure you can explain the situation with ease.

Assuming you've done nothing wrong, I wouldn't worry too much. You can simply say he is your landlord and you just know him because you've seen him to pay the rent and such.

If you sometimes entertain young ladies in your house (of which I niether know or care about, just for the record) I would be careful that you are sure their age is "approriate". Other than that I don't see why you have anything to worry about, as long as you are careful to avoid any notice from those who might try to take advantage of the situation.

As for the rent, if you can't contact the landloard. you can't pay the rent, can you? Just have the cash available if it ie requested....and make sure you get a usual reciept.

I really don't see you having any problems, especially if you keep a low profile.

That's what I hope. Nevertheless I do fear that innocence isn't always a barrier to a shakedown/extortion attempt here, especially over such a sensitive subject. Thinking of moving nonetheless now. Appearing on the radar in LOS, in any capacity, is never a good idea I fear.
