mattcodes
I have a Thai friend that I want to donate a computer I inherited to (P4 Celeron 2.5ghz, 512mb RAM, 40gb disc, cd-r drive, 15" lcd, usual mobo network/sound). She has used a computer before for basic hotmail.com and when she previously worked at electrical store so basics of mouse/key/internet explorer are probably okay. Here's what I'm thinking so far: I figure I will swipe the hard disc. Install Windows XP SP 3 (licensed so won't be one of these dodgy spyware hel_l hole OS forks that the market sells - like the non existant XP 2007) Install NOD32 (again licensed, set to silent mode for non intrusive notifications and background updates where possible, not keen on AVG free seems it want attention too much) Update drivers and optional updates - Install IE8 and Firefox Set language & keyboard to Thai. Then what? Some of you must have Thai friends/wifes, what other software? settings? utilties? A few non graphic intensive games perhaps? Any thai-english software? Any offline educational material? I figure I will check if her area has a wifi connection, put in a PCI wireless card in if a unsecure network exists too.. mattcodes
Ah yes of course, VLC a must, thanks for the heads up. Slightly OT, Is there any Thai torrent sites where I can download a movie or two every other week and pass it on via a USB stick?
filingaccount
General anti-crapware Spybot S&D (update weekly) Spywareblaster (update weekly) CCleaner PCtools firewall Media player and codec FFDshow with media player classic homecinema (instead of VLC) Tweak UI UltraVNC to remotely control and remotely update any softwares and drivers. (only requires your friend to open the program and tell you the current IP address (www.whatismyip.com) Make sure you password protect the remote access.
