Historic plane to be first to use new Bangkok's airport

CHIANG MAI: --Eighty years ago, it made a historic flight from Thailand to Laos, Vietnam and China.

This year, thanks to the efforts of aviation enthusiasts, a replica of 'Miss Siam' could be the first aircraft to land on the runway of Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Group Capt. Samran Kaysorn, head pilot for the Foundation for the Preservation and Development of Thai Aircraft, told reporters today that the Royal-sponsored foundation hoped to replicate the flight made in 1932 by Luen Phongsophon, aviator, MP and inventor of the long-tailed boat.

If the proposals get the green light from the countries involved, the replica 'Miss Siam' would take to the sky once more, flying from the country's northern province of Chiang Mai to Bangkok, the central province of Nakhon Phanom, the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani and over Laos to China.

'Miss Siam', said to be in perfect working condition, is currently housed at a hangar belonging to the foundation at Bangkok's Don Muang Airport.

The foundation hopes that it can be the first plane to land at the capital's new Suvarnabhumi Airport when it officially opens in September.

Group Capt. Luen, Thailand's first civil aviator, took five days to make his historic flight back in June 1932, and is said to have met with many adventures on his way

I heard that the new airport would be ready enough in September 2005 for a plane to land to save face. Sounds like something as photogenic as this would be the ideal plane... :D

I seriously hope it wouldn't be the first plane to land at the new airport though - I hope they're not using replicas of 80 yr old planes for the test flights! :o:D

It wouldn't require much of an airport to land a plane that size, just a bit of road, or a small lawn :D

How very apt! A copy! :D

It had to be. Phuket Air uses the original for the Bangkok-Shanghai shuttle. :o
