NAKHON RATCHASIMA: -- As the government proudly tests Suvarnabhumi airport this morning, it could spare a thought for officials in this northeastern province who would like their eight-year-old airport to survive.

The 400-million-baht airport was built under former prime minister Chatichai Choonhavan and opened in 1997 on an area of 4,635 rai that used to be part of the Nong Teng forest in tambon Tha Chang of Chalerm Phrakiat district.

Thai Airways International (THAI) once offered a regular service but shelved it after it lost too much money. Low-cost carrier Thai Air Asia had a Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima service with a promotional fare of 99 baht, but gave it up in July 2004.

The airport is about 30km from the heart of the province, which is the gate to the Northeast. Travellers can take Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima buses which leave every 10 minutes and take three hours.

Provincial authorities, the chamber of commerce and the airport wrote to the prime minister and the transport minister, asking them to get THAI to reintroduce its service, but they have not received replies.

Airport chief Vichien Pho-im said the airport served no commercial flights but handled a few flights a day for the private sector and state agencies.

Buriram airport is 32km or so NE of the town and Nok air have two flights a week from Don Muang airport. (Mon and Thu) these are the only commercial flight to Buriram these days.

Unless you want to bus it (and I do not know what the route is likely to be) then you are on a flight from Chiang Mai and another from Bangkok to Buriram.

I would seriously consider pricing a taxi.

Sorry!Boys!All posts - not true.Airline which served Buriram - had gone bust recently;it is in another thread here,so at the moment

there is no flight connection to Korat/Buriram/Surin.

From ChiangMai you have good overnight buses to Korat,from there - it is only 130km. - but it is slow 130 km;transport options on this sector

are poor:local train,local bus(2 hours).You can fly to BKK,go to Morchit,take long distance bus To Buriram(6 hours) or express train(6 hours).

On one train you can have sleeper.Go by bus to Korat and from there you can arrange car - if you are tired already.Sector BKK-Korat is very fast by bus,they go every 15min.Do not miss BuriramPizza there - pure delight!

Nobody protests,but it looks,that NokAir has picked up Buriram and may be they fly 2 times a week on Mo and Thu.Good!But you have to check it up.

When does this flight start? I would want to know if the route is commercially viable. Only government officials, a few locals and resettled farangs would use it. I suspect that it runs at loss just to serve certain politicians...

Only if they had their sponsor pay for the flight, other wise they would pocket the money and take the bus.
