FDA to investigate baby milk maggot claims

BANGKOK: -- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is to launch an investigation into claims that maggots were found in a box of infant milk formula.

Speaking on a radio station this morning, a listener phoned in to state that she had purchased a box of formula milk from a grocery store in the Phasicharoen area of Bangkok.

Upon mixing up the formula, she had discovered it contained maggots.

She then purchased a second box from the same shop, only to find maggots crawling around in the powder.

FDA Secretary-General Pakdee Pothisiri told reporters that FDA officials had looked at both boxes, and had found them to contain weevils and other insects.

The formula in question was imported from the Philippines, and produced on 21 June last year, with an expiry date of 21 December 2005.

Although it is possible that the infestation of insects was a result of negligence on the part of the purchaser, Prof. Pakdee said that the FDA would initially believe the purchaser's claims, and warned that the producers could face several penalties if they are found to have been selling contaminated food.
