Where Is The Best Meal Deal In Town?

Spankys is a favourite of mine if I want farang food. Thin sliced hot roast beef sarnies, meatball subs e.t.c all for a very reasonable price. The owner is a nice bloke too. Don't know the name of the road but it is on the road that T junctions into the road that Las Vegas is on. The area around Tuskers and the Princes Hotel.

Spanky's gets my vote too. Great burgers and stuff, just like Mike's USED TO be, but about 40% cheaper. All food made fresh, and a friendly owner to boot. It is a little off the beaten track, but that's why he is cheaper and you are not sat in the middle of an endless flow of traffic and all their fumes!

Here's my directions as i couldn't understand the other ones I found on ThaiVisa...To get there turn off the moat down Chiang Moi Road (the corner where Mike's burgers is (to avoid disappointment, don't stop here... :) )), take the first left (wicker/rattan shop on the corner), keep right at the fork and he's on your left 20 metres before you reach a "T" junction. Mmmmm...

If you take the quality of the "beer" into concideration, 60B small bottle is high, if the place is nice or there is entertainment then thats an ok price. I think Darets is good deal for some farang food. They make a great club sandwich for 60B. Their beer prices are very cheap, last I checked the dreaded beer Chang was 50 for the large bottle.

if you know Darrets guest house by the east moat nr the thapae gate large chang is 45b so yes 60 for small is a rip off

Don't forget Franco-Thai. It's on a little back soi behind the IT shops at the top of the moat, behind fitness thailand.

I always get their chicken in mustard sauce for 140 baht. comes with choice of potato, salad and bread for the table. Great choice of sauces for their beef or chicken (and i think pork) dishes. Always a sure thing.

Also have to agree with U.N. Irish Pub, Spanky's and Duke's. Mad Dog and Pom Pui are pretty good too.

I second Praties. It's good food and the owners are really nice. (I believe an Aussie/Thai couple).

Another hidden gem is Reggies which is located on the first floor of an apartment building directly behind Payap University. It is similar to a simplified Subway sandwich shop. I was there last week and if I remember correctly, you get a half sub, coleslaw, french fries and a Beer Lao (not Leo), for 75 baht. If it is not 75 baht, it is 90 baht. Either way, they have some pretty good and cheap combos.

That's a fraction of the price of Subway. Are the subs good?

That sounds too god to be true. I think a small beer Lao costs about 35 baht so if that's included in the price of the meal it's a great deal. I hope there's enough profit in it for the guy to survive. Sometimes these places are too cheap so they don't make enough to pay the bills and eventually close. A friend told me about a place on the San Khamphaeng road just past the Superhighway junction, doing what he considered a very good pork or beef steak with mashed potato and veg for 39 baht! Very well presented as well as tasty, so he said. Needless to say it lasted about 6 months. If he was packing them in, maybe he could have made a small profit, but apparently he only had about 6 tables anyway. I wonder if these guys do any costing before they set the price.

The subs at Reggies are fine. If you go in thinking that it's going to be like Subway, you'll be disappointed but overall, they are good. They have about 5-6 different types of sandwiches to choose from and about 1/3 of the topping choices as Subway. Reggies makes their own french fries (the thin type). As far as the beer, I did ask the owner about how he can charge such low prices. Apparently he has his sources where he can get it for quite cheap.

Finding the place is tough the first time. Behind Payap University is a roundabout (it may be considered part of the Carrefour land complex). If you travel East from the roundabout, there are two large student-style apartment buildings immediately on the left hand side with a parking lot out front. Reggie's is on the bottom floor of the first apartment building.

Another option is in Meechok Plaza directly beside Siam Commercial Bank on Mae Jo Road. There is a huge sign that you cannot miss for their street stall. For 39 baht, you get mashed potatoes, veggies and a steak (chicken, beef or pork). Portions are small but price and food are good.

I think the price of beer is viewed with the *perks* the establishment offers when drinking in said location

Well, there's a couple of average but pricey pub/restaurants around town......I find it hard to think of any 'perks' they offer, especially the ones with no air-con.

Of course you might be referring to 'other' perks usually found in bars. :)

Cool, thanks for that - the cheap beer laos will happily wash down anything lacking with the sandwich.

Any of you guys ever hit up the buffet at Zoe in Yellow in the Reggae Rasta area ? They tout themselves as more than a bar, but a Greek and Turkish cafe, and it's pretty spot on when it comes to their buffet. Of the guys who run it, one is Greek, the other Turkish, and together they've assembled just about any and all of the Greeks and Turks in town to come hang out and eat or cook there. There's always real authentic food on hand at the buffet -the only time they actually have food - the buffet only happens twice weekly: Thursdays and Sundays at 8pm-11pm.

It's 140 baht, though every blue moon they host a free one for regular customers. There's always a salad and something else vegan, a couple more vegetarian and pasta choices, and then something with meat. They also have authentic Doner Kebab, but that's extra. I always get my fill, even of meat without the doner kebab . It's like crashing at some Turkish or Greek mama's house... there's variety and it's nice and made with love since I think they're making it as much to satisfy themselves as their customers.

And as for the music and all the backpackers n stuff.... Zoe manages to stay pretty mellow with just a few of us locals until the night really kicks in closer to ten. It's great to have a drink, eat and catch up with friends. But I'll admit, later, when they pack in the party crowd and the dj's get going, it's often too loud for old RTD to stick around, unless I'm really into tying one on and joining the fracas.

Greek & Turkish? Yummy, yummy, Mouth watering in progress here! Some directions for Zoe in Yellow please??? Where is the Reggae Rasta area? Really appreciated!

It's situated off Rajawiti rd, the best directions I could give would be coming away from the moat on the same side of the road as the UN Irish pub walk past the pub and it's the next soi and it's on your left.

Just to clarify those directions a bit... Yes walk down Rajawiti rd with the UN Irish Pub on your right, but keep walking towards the traffic lights and then turn in to your right at the last Soi before the lights, then you will see Zoe in Yellow on your right.

The taiwanese restaurant down the road from Kad suan Kaew shopping center has huge portions, gyoza there is only 55 baht for 12 pieces....portions of every dish there are also about twice of what you would expect, free hot or cold tea too.

portions are humongous and the prices are very cheap. tired of thai food, id check this place out. Taiwanese noodles are unlike anything ive ever eaten, the texture is very addictive.

Great farang food deal at West...opposite Hillside Plaza 4. Set meal: lots of choices: 3 course meal for 190 bt. Excellent caesar salad/soup; about 9 entrees for main course, and then superb desserts.

Wine at 110 bt per glass a bit steep.

Also, Red Lion by Night Market is worth a visit for both farang and Thai food. half litre of red wine for 210.

Agree about the Taiwan restaurant - good food and not expensive though obviiously not Farang!

There's also a new Farang food restaurant just along in the same block called SoupaSteak. Right next door to Salsa Kitchen, making for a whole block of varied culinary deligths as you've got The Leomn Tree and a Japanese place there too.

I haven't tried it but a friend checked it out a couple of nights back and reported great food and realistic prices with A/C and modern decor. Menu is western Salad, soup grill, steak type fare though I guess that's implied by the name.

Good food, very clean and not expensive by any means. No alcohol served as far as I know but I'm sure we all can manage at least one meal without beer lol. Breakfast is very good as is the Lasagne!

U.N. Has always been good as well in my opinion and not really that expensive considering the quality.

If all else fails and you can't be bothered to travel ... 1112 always delivers the goods <img src="http://static.thaivisa.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I refuse to eat in a place called, Pratties.

Guess you will be missing out on some good food then :-)

Not sure the spelling of the place but the place id recommend for value is "Seeow?'' (Laos for FRIEND), its a thai restaurant/bar with good live music thai country, and covers on request with great thai/Laos food and a buzzing atmosphere. The place is located near the Playhouse Theater and the Mercure Hotel in Chiang Puak. The average price of the food is 50baht per main, they have 3 large beers for 140baht . Only problem is this place is not geared towards the farang, so the menu is in Thai but the friendly staff will help you with your order, Id recommend the crying tiger bbq beef, the larb and the stirfried vegies. :)

Not sure if it's the same place you describe but there was a place called Hok Si Eoow (meaning 641 with a gambling conottation) located right next to Playhouse/Differ. Shut a couple of months ago allegedly after the owner disappeared owing money (you know how it is :) ). A real fun place with some very sweet staff including two gorgeous twins :D , but last time I ate there, not long before it shut, we had the most revolting food that even some Tai Yai companions wouldn't eat.

I think it recently got a makeover and has reopened as something else. There are several other new places on the same lot now (where the coaches used to park for Simon Cabaret). Very handy for dinner before enjoying the Soi 4 delights :D

The Terrace restaurant at Makro Hang Dong does Pork steak with French Fries for 35 - 40 baht which is ridiculously cheap. It may even include a free jug of water, which is barmy at that price. That's so cheap, you could leave a 40 baht tip and still have change from 100baht. Everyone's a winner.

I'm going tomorrow thanks to a recommendation from a guy on TVisa (he's been a regular there for some time, so it must be good).

TOTALLY AGREE......The Meals On Wheels service is great. Much cheaper than getting a tuktuk to Dukes and back. Food arrives hot and correct so I am happy to give my tuktuk money as a tip to the delivery person. I would like to "eat my way through" the entire Dukes menu but it's hard not to stick with what I love.......the pizza and the ribs.

I used to love the barbeque at Sojos but they've moved out by Grace so the tuktuk fee is more than the cost of the meal! Anyone find another barbeque to recommend?????

I've tried it, but only the cheeseburger that they have advertised in front of the store. - nice shop, but the burger needs some work. Will give them the beef steak test next, see what happens...
