Network Printer

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm after some info on networks. Just wondering if it possible to have a printer, without a computer attached, connected to the internet via a phone line? And I connect to it by means of a private network. So I connect to it from wherever I am, via the internet and print.

Hope you all can understand my question, and thanks in advance.

Hi Mussen,

It certainly is possible, but it will be very expensive!

You will need a stand-alone VPN server, which will enable you to establish a network connection over the internet. Combine this with a network printer and you are good to go...

We are talking 3000 US$ and over :o

Much cheaper option would be an old secondhand PC, with a modem and set-up to act as a dial-up server. You could then dial your home phoneline (where the PC is located), connect to the PC and then do whatever you like (including printing)

If the PC is on adsl you could access it worldwide wherever you have internet access.

Remote control software, like PCAnywhere, would enable you to use that PC and printer, just like you would be sitting behind it from pretty much anywhere...
