I used to earn my living as a freelance studio musician in the SF Bay Area. We had a saying: "Play a banjo, go to jail; that's the law."

Still want that banjo???

Actually, the banjo is a fine instrument when played properly.

That's funny, I was just in Bangkok and saw a banjo in a band for the first time in years. It was a 6 or 7 piece Thai band playing foot stomping Irish music in an Irish pub. They each had an instrument and there was an accordion a as well as a banjo, and a smallish guitar-like instrument that I don't know the name of (mandolin?). I'm not Irish but the music was lively and enjoyable.
