NACC drops cases against Pheu Thai MPs and Suthep

By The Nation

The National Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday dropped some cases that were filed against Pheu Thai MPs as well as former Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban.

The commission has cleared Pheu Thai MPs and members of the former coalition of allegations that they received expensive gifts during a New Year lucky draw, NACC secretary-general Apinan Isarangkura na Ayutthaya said yesterday. Allegations that Suthep abused his power as former deputy prime minister to have the national carrier, Thai Airways International, provide special flights from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son have also been dropped, he said.

The commission resolved that the Pheu Thai Party had not hosted the New Year shindig on December 23, 2009, so no party executives could be held responsible. The bash was organised by MPs and attended by other party staff members and fellow politicians.

The NACC also found that no expensive gifts were handed out and the car key shown as a lucky-draw gift was just a mock-up. No car had been prepared for the raffle, and investigation showed that no party members had won any expensive gifts.

The law prohibits MPs from receiving gifts worth more than Bt3,000, unless allowed by regulations.

As for Suthep, investigators found that it is normal for the national carrier to provide a new flight for government officials if all its regular flights are fully booked.

THAI provided a flight to 40 MPs for a business trip to Mae Hong Son and sold the remaining seats to the public. It did not provide a special flight to Suthep as alleged, Apinan said.

But all in a sudden, no other passengers were on the plane. Haven't heard a better joke before 5555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555+:jap:

Well if any passengers happened to be in the airport, and wanted to go from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Song, on an unadvertised and unscheduled flight, they would have sold tickets. It is just unfortunate that there weren't any. Of course you would've had to be less than picky about your travelling companions.
