Tourist Police arrest Arab accused of producing pornographic movies here in Pattaya.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Wootishart, the Chief of Pattaya’s Tourist Police Division called a press conference on Wednesday to announce the arrest of a man from UAE aged 47 who we cannot name because of new reporting regulations. He was caught after an arrest warrant was issued in his name because of a complaint from a Thai woman who worked in a beer bar who refused to be part of a pornographic video production allegedly produced by the suspect.

Acting on the warrant, Tourist Police located the man and arrested him inside his room at the Maree House Apartments in Soi Asia Hotel off the Pratamnak Road. Inside his room was video production equipment, woman’s make-up, sex toys and mini-dv tapes which revealed previous video productions which as you can see through the necessary pixilation of this picture they are of an explicit nature and contravene obscenity laws here in Thailand. The man will now be charged with a variety of offences related to the case and he is now on remand awaiting his court appearance.

I find this funny, in a different way. Maybe because I'm older than most here. Back in the days of film, before video tape and DVD, Thailand was known as the "Blue movie capital of the world." If you watched a prono movie in the 50's and 60's, there was a better than even chance that it was filmed somewhere in Thailand.

I tend to see many males with cameras around Pattaya recording girls that don't seem to know they are being filmed. They could just be tourists having some fun and meaning no harm but you never know, do you?

On one of my birthdays in Pattaya some man filmed the whole lot that I'd never seen before in my life. I assumed it was a friend of someone that was at my party. When I asked around it turned out no one knew the guy!

I've seen males film in shopping malls also, just the other week me and a friend was filmed whilst in a mall, it really isn't right. It is tourist behaviour to want some memories of their holidays but going around intentionaly filming females without their consent is a little perverted to me.

This behaviour just stands out to me as I am a female but has anyone else seen it?

I agree that there are some issues in the middle east, such equality in rights between men and women, that should be addressed. These are due to some historical factors that I will not go into today. However calling these people names or insulting them will not make the situation any better.

Indeed it is a difficult task, but not impossible in my opinion. The general dominance of men over women is unfortunately a universal phenomenon, even in the so called developed countries. Just look at the gender representation among politicians, executives, etc. How many women presidents US had for the last two and half centuries? Why are still there inequalities in salary even today? etc. Do we remember that women had the right to vote in switzerland only since 1971? (France 1944, UK 1928, US 1920). That's not so long ago!

Therefore, I believe with today's communications and media, the same process will occur in the middle east, but gradually that is. Indeed there are some positive signs for this change, such as the granted right to vote for women in Kuwait this year. So it's only a question of time I believe.
