Jatuporn and Natthawut got court permission to visit Hong Kong

BANGKOK: -- Red-shirt leaders Jatuporn Promphan and Natthawut Saikua were granted permission to leave the country temporarily because it was believed they would not jump bail, the Criminal Court said yesterday.

Court Chief Justice Thawee Prachuaplap said that Jatuporn and Natthawut - like other defendants granted bail - had the right to travel or meet anyone, even if that person might be fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Jatuporn and Natthawut, key defendants in a terrorism case in connection with the political unrest and riots of 2010, met with Thaksin in Hong Kong last weekend.

According to the chief justice, Jatuporn sought court permission to travel to Hong Kong from October 6 to 8, while Natthawut sought to visit Vietnam on October 3-4 and Hong Kong on October 5-7. They were required to report back to the court tomorrow and place a surety of Bt60,000 each.

"The court always allows defendants to travel overseas if it finds that the persons will not try to escape," Thawee said.

He added that the court might not allow such an overseas trip if the defendants were suspected of going to plot a severe incident or to meet with someone considered dangerous or wanted for serious crimes.

When reminded by a reporter that Thaksin was a fugitive, Thawee said Jatuporn and Natthawut did not specify in their requests that they would meet Thaksin. "As far as I know, Thaksin was sentenced to two years in jail - and that was not a severe punishment," he said.

In 2008, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders imposed a two-year jail term on Thaksin for abuse of authority over a land deal but the former PM had fled the country.

Natthawut, who is deputy agriculture minister, admitted yesterday he had met Thaksin in Hong Kong last weekend but said they had not discussed politics.

Natthawut travelled to Hong Kong with Jatuporn, who is tipped to join the Cabinet headed by Thaksin's sister Yingluck.

Natthawut said he just happened to have some errands in Hong Kong while Jatuporn wanted to take a vacation. So they took the opportunity to meet Thaksin, which was a common thing to do because they had not seen one another for a long time.

Referring to a Cabinet reshuffle, he said that was within the power and consideration of the prime minister.

The minister guaranteed with his honour and dignity that during the meeting with Thaksin, they did not talk about domestic politics.

Thaksin wanted to convey his concern for red shirts who were detained or injured, and urged them to look after one another and give moral support, he said.

Observers say a reshuffle of the Yingluck Cabinet is imminent following Yongyuth Wichaidit's resignation as deputy premier last week. Many politicians seeking Cabinet seats were seen travelling to Hong Kong to meet Thaksin, while Yingluck has kept insisting there will be no reshuffle soon.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung denied he met Thaksin in Hong Kong over the weekend, saying a photo of him with Thaksin published in the Hong Kong media was an old picture from five years ago.

"I actually met Thaksin in 2007. I did nothing wrong because at that time I had no (political) position. It was before the then Power People Party, who won the election, formed a government. If I had failed to meet him I would never have been appointed interior minister," Chalerm said.

Meanwhile, Democrat Party Deputy Spokesman Mallika Boonmeetrakool said she had gained many clues on Thaksin's whereabouts from civic group networks and social media and would submit them to the PM's Office so they can arrest Thaksin.

She was also investigating the photo of Thaksin and Chalerm, she said, to see if it was an old photo as Chalerm claimed. If it was a current picture, she would submit a petition to the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate the deputy prime minister's ethics.

No politics discussed, probably only moral support for the prolonged battle, like earlier in March, 2010:

"Thaksin, red-shirt leaders betray their own people"

http://www.nationmul...e-30124866.html

2010-05-26

"Thaksin Shinawatra speaks to Lateline"

http://www.abc.net.a...10/s2910366.htm

Oh and BTW, with k. Thaksin concerned about jailed red shirts and UDD leaders too busy to take care, who else will stand up for these innocents ?

"Thaksin, a former billionaire businessman, distanced himself Thursday from direct involvement in any political movement.

He insisted he is not advising members of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), the formal name for the Red Shirts, who enjoy wide support among Thailand's rural poor and working class.

"I don't know them," he said.

But Thaksin also said Abhisit's conservative coalition government, largely supported by Thailand's wealthier urban population, must sit down with UDD leaders to discuss their concerns."

cheesy.gif and I am sure they thought that about the greatman himself and look how that turned out

Meanwhile, Democrat Party Deputy Spokesman Mallika Boonmeetrakool said she had gained many clues on Thaksin's whereabouts from civic group networks and social media and would submit them to the PM's Office so they can arrest Thaksin

Many Clues !!!...cheesy.gif ....must be some real Sherlock Holmes types working the Democrats

Surely in a case like this the PM could be impeached for obstruction of justice, failing to carry out their duty as "democratically" elected official or conflict of interest ?

funny scene at the Hermes store biggrin.png

is that Chalerm staggering from too much ear medicine at the end of the video? unsure.png

,

The red shirt leaders always claim that AV is out of touch with the poor.

I always have difficulties digesting the fact that a billionaire, playing around in 6 star hotels, claims that his only goal in life is to help the poor

Just doesn't sell.

Some famous Thaksin words: If the army wants to clean up the protest side, resist. If they use force I will come to Thailand to fight with you. I am very close to you now. Can be there any moment.

A few days later.....my people told me it is not safe for me to go back to Thailand now. Sorry you have to continue with your struggle without me. Remember, I am thinking of you (and my money).

TBH it looks like the old boys had a night out on the lash after not discussing politics, you know the first rule of going out on the lash, no talking about politics.

Look at about 1 minute in, Thaksin having a stagger and trys to get into some person of restricted heights taxi. What Thaksin, human? It cannot be, shurely..........

There's the Court Chief Justice suggesting that Thaksin is not Thailands most wanted man, or the Worlds only escaped fugitive Prime Minister as he was also known by the local rags (except he's not if you take into account Syrias' escaped fugitive Prime Minister, Riyad Hijab) but actually a PM who was deposed by a military Junta as the rest of the intelligent World regards him.

I'm guessing that seeing as they're 'key defendants' in the terrorism case, and have enough knowledge to have Thaksin banged up for good, they have never been in a better position to make a few demands, say a ministerial post or at least a few more million baht.

Plenty of thorns in T's side.

A two year jail sentence is not a severe punishment when you can get just a suspended sentence for killing people?

When people talk about two year jail sentences not being severe, i'd love them to spend two days in a Thai prison cell and then come back and repeat that comment.

PPD? Is that a TLA?

If you're replying to me, which I presume you are, you might want to use my username TheKrayTriplet. TKT is fine as well if you can't be bothered with writing which judging by the brevity of your "question/statement" is all too apparent.

You may notice that the my post quotes the Justice Minister direct from the OP. There really is no other way of reading it. If you read the OP you might notice that the quote/s I posted are the Justice Chiefs response to the "journalists" reminder that Thaksin was a fugitive. Read my post again - It's all there.

So in response to your
"Really? The Court Chief Justice suggested that?"
the answer is Well, Yes he did.

...get bail....to meet with a fugitive........has this ever happened before......anywhere in the universe........

No, amazing Thailand is the first and only country where two criminals out on bail are officially allowed to leave the country to go and meet another impertinent fugitive criminal that got (only) two years sentence. What a judge! sick.gif

Much more funny: "The minister guaranteed with his honour and dignity that during the meeting with Thaksin, they did not talk about domestic politics." .... with his honour and dignitycheesy.gif
