Hi everyone im sure you know me by now.Well as you may know or not im moving shores to japan.I have just come back from there where i was sorting out my job and a place to stay.What a wonderful place it is.yes expensive but of course the wages are higher.The food is much above what you would find inThaiand i mean not everyone is getting fat due to there sugar intake.The peoiple seem nice and it seems a lot more safer than thailand.As for the women well japanese ladies win hands down in al departments and of course you know there not with you beacuse of your money as they already have it.Im back in thailand for a week and i just cant wait to leave .I do have some fond memories of this place but the bad outweighs the good.Good luck to everybody and of course i will try to log in toi thaivisa when im there.Bon voyage.

Carefull where you shop, supermarkets can be relatively cheap to high proced depending which one you use

Accomodation can be ok if you live a little outside the cities, and or more than 7 minutes walk to nearest rail station.

Avoid drinking out every night, that will kill you in terms of cost.

Get outside the cities, loads of great places to see and do.

Learn some of the language will make life easier, and check on teh expat forums for all manner of everything.

I can't say that living in Japan appeals to me as a whole but on those points you made i really couldn't disagree

Believe me, I have a lot of experience in Japan,it has its good points and its bad points, go to the expat forums and you will find nothing but whining about how the Japanese are stupid, the Cops are lazy, the women are cold etc etc.

Its no different to the whiners here complaining about everything that doesn't suit them in Thailand.

Oh and be careful what you download from torrent sites, from October the 1st downloading copyright material can land you in Jail for 2 years, a 2million Yen fine, about 800,000 Baht. And you certainly don't want to go to a Japanese Jail.

And the Myth that all Japanese people are rich is no different to the myth that all Farangs are rich in Thailand, its just a myth, that's all.

Anyway, have a good time in Japan, it's certainly different.

Free wifi spots are rarer that hens teeth too, even in Hi Tech Tokyo, and trying to get a mobile phone in Japan can be a nightmare if you don't have a residence card.

But, Japan is a fascinating Country, the people are in General very polite and helpful and usually honest, I left my wallet in a Tokyo Taxi, I still had the taxis reciept with call numbers to the taxi company, there was about 3000 USD in the wallet, Credit Cards, ATM, drivers license etc etc.

Within 30 Mins I had my untouched wallet delivered to me by the driver,and it isn't unusual, that heavens another Gaijin didn't get in the same cab and see it first !!

I think that's a once in a lifetime occurrence. Very lucky!

I left my blackberry in a Thai taxi a few months ago. Called it a few minutes later and the taxi driver had already removed the sim card and claimed it as his own

My suggestion... Get a bicycle. No need to go for something high end, just something to get you around your area for shopping.

And yeah, the downloading rules do suck, but people are hoping that they will only go after you if the copyright holder makes a stink. If they come after me, I will fade into the mist.

Free wifi? Even if you happen to be in an area with a wifi signal and it looks good... You will need to sign up and pay. I can't believe they are so stingy.

Always keep your ID card with you. If you get caught without it, the police can take you to the station giving you the opportunity to call someone to help you out.

Food Shopping

You can spend as much or as little as you want. Depending on your budget, stick to the usual stores the Japanese shop at:

Daiei - Good prices

Peacock - Criminally high prices

Tokyu Store - 50/50 Somethings are good, some are bad

OK Store - Very good prices

Marusho - High Prices

Nissin - (Import shop - just one location in the high rent district) High prices, but I found some beef sausages imported from Thailand. They were cheap and the taste was not bad.

Queen's Isetan - This place will break you

Seijo Ishi - High end

Olympic - Medium

Don Quiote - Decent prices on liquor, porno goods, dry goods and refrigerated items. Good prices on bicycles too.

Yamaya - Tons of imported liquor. They have the biggest variety of imported liquor I have ever seen in Tokyo.

Keio Store - High Prices

My Basket - Small grocery store chain (AEON Brand) with shops popping up all over. They are usually the size of a 7-11. Decent prices but a small selection.

Daiso - The 100 yen shop. Sometimes there are some good items to pick up.

The Ponies

There are 3 race tracks in the Tokyo area and it is always a kick to go. You will see entire families from the little ones up to grandpa/grandma having a good time. G1 races are a mad house and the Tokyo Race track (Fuchu) can hold 200k people.

I lived in Japan for a while and yeah heard as much complaining as here, probably more come to think of it but less foreigners there so griping was more intense. Personally I couldn't wait to get away from the place but the majority of my time was spent in Tokyo.

Sounds a bit like Thaicruze, he has a Cruze so they are the best, he has an Apple so naturally they are the best. You are off to Japan so that of course is the best place. Thing about the world is that different things appeal to different people. I holidayed in Japan and really liked it. However for living it seems, like the West, to be a controlled Statist environment, many like that, others don't. Thailand is still pretty free and easy and I like that about it, suspect though it won't last forever.

Never heard of you before but good luck with your move to Japan. I spent two weeks there a few years ago and it was a very interesting experience. The guy who said it was lucky that the wallet in the taxi was returned is wrong, you can throw your packed wallet into a crowd of Japanese people and if you come back the next week it will still be there untouched. Unless one of the evil foreigners gets their hands on it.
