Windows Xp:grave Accent (~) To Switch Languages

Hi.

Does anyone know how to enable the grave accent (`) to switch languages on windows XP. Some of the computers at work have the "Grave Accent" option in Language Bar->Settings->Key settings and some don't.

Staff can't get use to using Left Alt & Shift to switch languages which is the other option.

Is is the Thai version of XP only that has this option?

I'm pretty sure that with English XP you can't just use the grave accent. You can set it up to use various other key combinations by going to Regional and Language Options in Control Panel. Then click the "Languages" tab, followed by the "Details" button. Now select "Switch to Thai" and press the Change Key Sequence button.

It works with the normal Windows XP. You just need to set the default language to Thai.

In the regional and language options, go to the advanced tab, set the language for non-unicode to Thai, and then click apply. Now, when you go to the input languages, you can select to change by using the grave accent.

Setting the default to Thai won't affect much... it will just make it so that certain programs (like Nero) will default to displaying Thai characters for multi-byte characters. For anything English, there is no noticeable change.

Hmm no go for me. Still don't get the "grave accent" option under Key Settings. Oh well, no biggie.

Although, that did fix the other problem with Thai characters displaying correctly in Quicken. So Thanks :o .

I found this on the internet a while ago and kept it as everytime I redo the hard drive I always forget how to set up the Thai in WinXP!............

How to set Thai to windows xp with grave accent language switcher

Step 1 : Go to "Start >> Control Panel"

Step 2 : Select "Regional and Languages Options" >> Double click to open it.

Step 3 : Select "Languages" tab and click "Install files for complex..." and "Install files for East Asian ..." >> Click "Apply"

Step 4 : The box says "Install supplemental language" will pop up, click "OK"

Step 5 : Click on Advance. At "Language for non-Unicode programs" box, choose Thai. Click "Apply" and "ok"

Step 6 : Reboot your system

Step 7 : After reboot, go to reginal and languages options again. At "Text services and input languages" box, click "Details". Click "Add", then choose "Thai" as an Input language, and choose "Thai Kedmanee" as keyboard layout. Then click "OK"

Step 8 : Then Click on "Key Settings" --> "Change key sequence". You should be able to choose "Grave accent" now.

After turning on the Thai language support, there should be a "language bar" added to the task bar, located on the right hand side. It will show as EN or TH. When typing in Thai, the language bar needs to be changed to TH. You can do this in two ways, either left click on the EN and you'll get a box where you can choose to change, or hit the tilde/accent key (far upper left corner of the keyboard). The letters you then type will be in Thai. You can change back to English the same way.

Other things you might need to check on, make sure the Thai version chosen is Thai Kedmanee and that the tilde/accent key is the method chosen for switching languages. Both can be accessed by right clicking on the language bar, choosing settings, and then Key Settings for changing/checking the method for switching languages. It should be on "Grave Accent". The Thai version can be changed by removing Thai Pattachote and installing Thai Kedmanee (found under keyboard layout.
