webfact Posted June 17, 2013 Share Posted June 17, 2013 Doctor drawn to help poor in remote areasPuangchompoo PrasertThe NationBANGKOK: -- Activist and philanthropist Dr Somprat Munjit has won this year's Outstanding Rural Doctor award from the Mahidol University's Faculty of Medicine and Siriraj Hospital.He said the inspiration that drove him to join the October uprisings in his younger years was also behind his devotion to the underprivileged in the remote parts of Chiang Rai today."Due to my participation in that political demonstration, I came to spend eight or nine years in the forest. All the time, I was aware of the social inequalities that existed and I was determined to work in remote areas where there's a significant shortage of doctors," Somprat said.Growing up in Nakhon Ratchasima, he studied at the Suankularb Wittayalai School and then the University's Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital. After graduation in 1991, he was posted to the Somdej Phra Yupparat Chiang Khong Hospital in Chiang |Rai.He has been with the hospital from that year on. During the past eight years, he has been director of the hospital as well as the Khun Tan Hospital.In the beginning, he was the only doctor at Khun Tan Hospital, working alongside 13 other staff members. Today, Khun Tan Hospital has more than 100 staff members."I'm proud that despite having other work to tend to, I am still treating patients for general diseases and Aids," Somprat said.He also set up a foundation to raise funds for patients and students in the field of healthcare.At the age of 56, Somprat |felt proud for receiving the award from his alma mater, he said."It's the most prestigious prize for rural doctors," he said. Yes many. Much of it unreported and without any higher/official acknowledgement.
