Rangsit University Apologises For 'Naked' Beachside Hazing
By Khaosod Online

BANGKOK: -- The Thai social network has been buzzing with controversial photo purportedly showing group of freshmen at a university standing naked in the sea - with their private parts barely covered by their hands - during a hazing session supervised by senior students.

A woman, believed to be one of the senior students, was also seen walking by the group of male students, seemingly oblivious of their stark nakedness.

The photo appears to be a reminder that the rituals of hazing (rub nong), in which senior students forcing the freshmen into series of humiliating activities to earn "respect" from the older students, are still widely practiced despite campaigns by some progressive students and human rights activists against the culture.

After much speculation and discussion, Rangsit University, which is based in northern suburb of Bangkok, issued an apology, acknowledging that the students who appeared in the photo study at its Faculty of Engineering.

The statement says the students organised the trip to the sea on their own way, and the university is not involved in any way.

It also insisted that the university has strict regulations over students′ activities. They are required to respect dignity of fellow humans and refrain from lewd acts or alcohol consumption, according to the statement.

Rub nong trips outside Bangkok are common for many university students. There has been constant complaints of sexual harassment, forced alcohol consumption, and excessive violence during some of these trips. Injuries or even deaths in rub nong trips have been previously reported by Thai media.

Supporters of rub nong culture claimed that it reinforces the principles of ′SOTUS′ - a short term for seniorty, obedience, tradition, unity, and spirit - among the students, while civil rights activists argue that it amounts to dictatorship and inhumane treatment of younger students in universities.

Typical behaviour of engineering students. Although, I'm impressed as there is no alcohol in the picture, and none of them are vomiting. It's a fact. that civil engineering students drink a lot and have the highest vomit per student production on campus. They also have the worst skin, and are sexually frustrated for their entire time of undergraduate studies. Mechanical and chemical engineers are usually cool. They also can do amazing pranks. They have good skin and do not vomit as frequently as the civvies.

Science faculty freshies never engaged in such activity. There was the ultimate Frisbee drinking challenge to compete in. whistling.gif

Anyway, what's the biggie? A bunch of adolescents engaged in homoerotic activity. It happens.

I think the old boy is giving us way too much information here!

In a few years these potential national leaders will be in another picture similar to one we saw a few days ago, they will be with a woman but this time they will be in bad military uniforms.

Alert, alert,... sooner or later there's gonna be a government rule that forbids wearing revealing clothes and put you to jail

There are gonna be crackdowns on everything that young people have fun with,... Etc...

But the moral of the story is, it's human nature for youngsters to piss of their parents, teachers, boring professors or any other authority figures...

That's what you get as a Face constructed society that worships mediocrity, blindly following your elders, bosses and teachers without questioning and an education system that really doesn't interest anyone with the rote learning crap...

All unis ever do is apologise after the fact, they never try to prevent any of the nonsense that happens.

Mind you it's common practice to deny anything is excessive and hide behind culture, teaching teamwork and other weak excuses.

The uni"s know only too well what goes on but choose to do nothing about it. It's easier to wait, deny all knowledge and issue a poor and less than sincere apology.

Can't speak to all univeristies, but my faculty at Mahidol severly curtailed these kind of activities years ago. Currently our students are only involved in activities for one week prior to school opening, and its most cheering, singing, and memorizing alma mater, etc. The last activity is to sing the university and college songs for graduates at their graduation ceremony.

Good to know especially if it's working. The uni I taught at many years ago saw new students being met at the bus station with music, cheering and nice welcomes and it was known that any hazing was to be done on campus away from the public gaze. Needless to say the uni president and senior staff knew " nothing ".

I will stop complaining about this and stop finding it "strange" ( to say the least), the moment someone can tell me, what ridiculing and humiliation has to do with life at a university and why freshman- students have "obey" senior- students with rituals like thin and much, much worse ones!

Not according to the girls in my office

How do you know? Have you seen their junk?

I really do object to the American expression " junk ". My bits and pieces are high quality, so I've been told, I'm very attached to them and no way am i throwing them out.
