Storm in Thailand kills two, damages 100 homes

BANGKOK: -- A half-hour rainstorm swept through a northeastern Thai province, damaging more than 100 homes and killing a man and his 8-year-old daughter when their home collapsed on them, an official said Saturday.

Kampa Kulab, 31, and his daughter Natarika were killed Friday in Ubon Ratchathani province, a provincial disaster prevention center official said on condition of anonymity because she is not authorized to speak with the media.

She said the victims' home had been under construction and was particularly vulnerable because it was unprotected in an area of rice paddies.

The storm damaged about 108 homes, affecting about 300 people in two districts of Ubon Ratchathani, 480 kilometers (300 miles) northeast of Bangkok, she said.

It must have been one heck of a storm....very sad

very heavy rain in many parts of central Thailand from Tak Fa to Sa Keaw . Quite a bit of debris on the highways with whole trees down near Nakon Nayok. The high wind gusts and torrential downpours reduced visibility on the roads and insufficient drainage produced standing puddles which made travelling quite hazardous.

The rain caused all police checkpoints to suspend operation , and the army checkpoint neak Sa Keaw was unmanned.

Sad to see the report of a child's death, BUT........

Was this a brick/stone house that collapsed, or a bamboo hut?

We do need to get these things in perspective.

The report has no real detail, just sensational journalism.

Homes and Temple damaged by winds

A heavy thunderstorm joined the Songkran festival yesterday with torrential rain and powerful winds that claimed two lives, tore down a temple and an old cinema, and blew away hundreds of house roofs.

A home in Ubon Ratchathani collapsed on a man and his eight-year-old daughter as the storm slammed the northeastern province, a provincial disaster prevention official said yesterday.

The victims were identified as Kampa Kulab, 31, and his daughter Natarika. The official said their home was under construction and thus vulnerable when the wind stormed passed a nearby paddy field.

More than 100 homes in the province were also damaged by the storm, which affected about 300 people in two districts, the official said.

Storms are common during the Songkran festival every year.

The department of Meteorology has warned people of possible tropical storm to-day.

The storm developed from a high pressure wedge from China.

"Beware of thunderstorms, severe winds, and hail in some areas," the department said on it`s website.

Ayutthaya mayor Somsong Sapakosonkul said many parts of the municipality were damaged by a storm which brought hail to the town.

The wind swept away more than 50 house roofs and damaged some temples in the provincial historical area.

The oldest movie theatre in the province was also reportedly destroyed

The nearly 70- year old theatre which had been shut down was reduced to piles of wreckage within minutyes by the storm.

In Chiang Rai, Kasem Suk Temple In Muang District also suffered when it`s chapel was torn down by powerful winds.

Nearby resident Boonruang Chumano- said there was some damage to the Buddha Statue with parts of the head, ear and hands broken.

The storm also felled an AIS mobile phone signal tower and damagaed more than 1000 houses in the province.
