webfact
Prosecutors file treason charges against PAD leadersBANGKOK, 30 August 2013 (NNT) - Public prosecutors have pressed treason charges against leaders of the 2008 protests by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD).At the Office of the Attorney-General on Thursday, the prosecutors decided treason charges against nine anti-government PAD leaders, including Maj.Gen.Chamlong Srimuang and Sonthi Limthongkul. The nine people were accused of persuading more than ten people to breach the country’s laws. The PAD’s lawyer Chanthapong Sabanatina traveled to the court on the same day to request the prosecutors to postpone a court summon for the nine people. The prosecutors later accepted the request and rescheduled their meeting with the accused on 27 September. The accused were having problem finding property to be used as bail and might ask for a second postponement, the lawyer said.-- NNT 2013-08-

I am so glad to see such an even handed legal system at work..... ok fine, I am all for justice, so lets charge PAD for treason, but while they are at it, a certain man in Dubai should have the same charges applied as well as charges for terrorism, as well as the red faithful, what PAD did is no different from what the Red shirts and their dubai sponsor did...
Popular Post soundman
These charges, and the subsequent prosecution, will of course be rushed through the courts in record time. No rain delays, ill health and a special provision for sentencing in absentia will also be made in this case, if one of the accused cannot make it. ......... Oh. I forgot, these charges will be allowed to evaporate if there is no opposition to amnesty for leaders of demonstrations.

Sorry. I was being a little sarcastic.Charge these guys with treason? Presumably that is punishable by death. The leaders of the other protests should be up on identical charges. Convincing 10 people to breach the law. Apply that to every government office. Pfffft. Edited August 29, 2013 by Thai at Heart

I am so glad to see such an even handed legal system at work..... Most definitely, Thais re lucky to have a government that does not practice double standards . PAD did do some crazy things including invading Swampy but this encouraging more than 10 people to break the law is intriguing. What about Jatuporn and others who encouraged tens of thousands to leave Bkk in flames which they did and now he sits as member of the cabinet. It's not sad that they do things like this as the sad part is they get away with it.
lujanit
Charged with treason? We can expect most BIB, politicians and civil servants to be charged shortly.
Ianatlarge
I always question the hole notion of "treason". If an act injures people, fine, go to court, and use the people so injured as the basis of the complaint, but how can a legal entity such as a nation be injured? This seems all too similar to corporations and limited liability. The charge of treason is all too easily used to stifle criticism of the powerful and crush dissent. Popular Post Tatsujin
It's April 1st guys . . . oh shit, no it's not . . . it's just Thailand's fair-minded use and application of "the law" to suit their own purposes. Double standards? What double standards? It's good to see that they've progressed past the name calling and pulling of hair in the playground though.
geovalin
And one more time, farangs -who would not allow foreigners to have an opinion about the local politic issues of their own country- know better than Thais what is fair or not in Thailand. boomerangutang
Only In Thailand: Man A swats a mosquito. Man B bludgeons a pig. Man A gets hauled up for cruelty to animals Man B get appointed governor of the province, even though he chooses to reside 4,000 miles away. Popular Post jaidam
The logic behind this is obvious. It is to get the yellows to agree to His amnesty, nothing more, nothing less. That the prosecutors are playing along with this silly game is risible.

GeorgeO
If my understanding is correct, the Statute of Limitations in Thailand does not apply to those accused of demonstrating against the government, but it does apply to murder (Red Bull case)....! gemini81
File charges against the prosecutors then, false claims & slander charges; if they wanna play in the circus, both sides can. tingtongteesood
If we can define treason as 'The crime of betraying one's country', then a great majority of politicians should be up on charges...
indyuk
As long as the DSI and the Public Prosecutor's office stick strictly to Thai Law without prejudice for all parties we, the foreign community in Thailand have no issue with current proceedings. The possible exception may be the long incarceration of Thai citizen's that have not been Tried and convicted of an offence under the Constitution of Thailand, which of course is in denial of their basic human rights. hellodolly
and rightfully so. Now if they will do the Democratic thing and charge Thaksin and his red shirt leaders with treason things will be equal. Of course they would all have to be tried in a court where the Judges could not be bought. Not exactly the Thaksin style of court proceedings. Think about your post a little. An outrageously corrupt government that openly flaunts the law charges 9 opponents with treason whilst completely ignoring the more recent same and more extreme behavior from its own supporters and owner. You don't really need a master's in political science to spot if this is fair or unfair, do you? Maybe you're from the former Soviet Bloc where this sort of behavior was regular and opinions weren't allowed. The rest of us don't suffer that same brainwashing. Yunla
PTP House Speaker, caught on tape taking orders from a criminal in a foreign country. That is Treason. It is subverting your powerful position in government and channeling that power overseas to unelected persons, who are fugitive criminals, who are not Thai citizens (if Thaksin was a Thai citizen he would have obeyed the laws of this land and gone to jail as ordered.) Also "we shall burn Bangkok to the ground" redshirt speeches onstage via mic, in 2010, sounds a bit treasonous to me.
