If you go over the bridge at Mukdahan there is an office on the left, small door, just passed the Immigration box where you get your passport stamped and the 2nd box where they do the paperwork for your car. The cost is 200 baht i think for 1 week or 1,000 baht for 1 year. But if you have never taken your car across before don't forget you must have a Car Passport that can be obtained at your local Motor Transport Department, where you pay for your Registration and License. The car cannot be under Finance to go over to Laos and the first time you must present the car book as well as the car passport for proof to Customs on the Thai side so all the relevant information can be recorded on their computer.Have all your paperwork to do with the car with you as you never know what customs will ask for. This is now strickly policed as many cars have been been left at the Casino by Thai's who have borrowed money against them there to gambly and lost so they just leave the car and if they don't go back and pay to reclaim the car, then the reposession agents have diffulty getting the car back to Thailand as it should not have been allowed to go over in the first place. Good Luck.

Hi I driven into Laos on a couple of occasions, without any problems, the cost of insurance is only a few hundred Baht, there is usually an insurance shop on the Laos side which are not open on Sundays, depending on which crossing you choose they may do the paper work for you, on coming back into Thailand at Chiang Khong, the boat crossing will cost you 1000 Baht weekdays, week ends and holidays 1500/2000 Baht. As above you will need a car passport.
