BANGKOK: -- RUBBER FARMERS in Chumphon province yesterday threatened to launch a mass rally if police forcibly disperse the ongoing protest by fellow farmers in neighbouring Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Local politicians, who are leaders of the rubber farmers' group, made this decision despite promising to provincial authorities on Sunday that they would not organise any mass protests. When asked about the format of the rally, the leaders said they would consult leaders of rubber farmers in the South first, adding that the protests would possibly be held at government offices first and that roadblocks would be used as a last resort.

Some 1,500 police officers have been stationed in Prachuap Khiri Khan to possibly break up the rally of 400 farmers at a key intersection in Bang Saphan district. This move came after the leaders met Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnog and failed to strike a deal for increasing rubber prices.

Pracha gave the Prachuap Khiri Khan protesters until 6pm yesterday to have their representatives meet a tripartite committee or "measures enabled under a law |on rescue and recovery missions |to ensure law and order would |be adopted in response to the protest".

The minister said rubber farmers, represented by a Nakhon Si Thammarat-based 35-leader committee, had agreed to a price of Bt90 per kilo of rubber at a meeting last month. He added that two of the 35 leaders who did not accept the Bt90 price were behind the Bang Saphan rally.

The protesters have set up several roadblocks on Phetkasem Road, which is the main thoroughfare in the South. Police have been directing the traffic to an alternative route and Pracha said the blocking of this road would not be tolerated.

Another outrage set to cause more major disruption to Thai society, but it was all of a Thaksin governments making. They that sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind .

"But the panel will follow the regular channels in another case, agreeing yesterday to recommend that the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) file criminal and civil charges against three companies and 42 people, including five members of the Thaksin cabinet, for alleged graft in the 1.4-billion-baht rubber saplings project, he said." http://asiancorrespondent.com/20884/corruption-cases-against-the-thaksin-regime/

"In 2004, the controversial rubber sapling project was proposed by then deputy agriculture minister Newin Chidchob in a bid to expand rubber plantation fields by one million rai and help raise the income of rubber farmers." http://antithaksin.wordpress.com/2009/08/17/overview-of-rubber-sapling-scandal/

It appears that didn't go to plan, who intheir right mind would think that increasing supply would increase prices, predictable it just caused a glut that dropped rubber prices.

It seem that if you trace all of Thailand political and social woes back to their root cause they always start with Thaksin.

Rubber farmers continue blocking road to South

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, OCT 29 – Rubber farmers from Thailand’s South have defied the authorities’ order to stop blocking Phetchkasem Road, the major route leading to the southern region, and vowed to continue their demonstration until their demands were met.

The rubber and oil palm farmers from 16 provinces in the South, however, moved chairs and tents from Km Marker 415 in Saphan Noi district to the roadside but refused to disperse.

Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Wira Siwatthanatrakun met with the farmers' leaders but no agreement was reached.

Motorists heading for or coming from the South were instructed to use the seaside road to avoid Petchkasem Road which was blocked between Km 400 and Km 423.

Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan said the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act would remain in force in the province to facilitate maintaining public order.

A tripartite committee comprising employers, farmers and academics was set up to find resolutions to the falling prices of rubber and palm oil.

Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnok said it was impossible to agree with the farmers’ five demands which, most importantly, involve pledging rubber price at Bt100/kg.

He said the provincial governor was empowered to take legal action if the protesters refused to open Petchkasem Road.

Agriculture Minister Yukol Limlaemthong said the government could not interfere in the market mechanism by purchasing rubber at Bt100/kg but farmers would be granted financial assistance for rubber production.

Oil palm farmers from 26 provinces met in Surat Thani yesterday to discuss solutions to declining price of palm oil and agreed to submit their proposals to the government for further action. (MCOT online news)

Well the rice farmers are getting paid much more than the market can pay for their rice, so why not the rubber farmers. Next it will be the palm oil farmers, then the fruit growers, then the fish farmers, then the tapioca farmers, then the shrimp farmers, then ....

The thai tax payers really are very generous people. While the PTP is responsible for this stupid situation, the reality is this situation was caused by inept policies many years ago. Simply put, Thailand has far too many farmers. Small farming is just uneconomical and has been promoted for years because of this "self sufficiency" theory.

Unfortunately for the thai rubber farmer, technology may rule the rubber tire obsolete in the future, and so their livelihood also.

This is nothing to do with the rubber price, it's to do with the fact that the govt lavished plenty of money on all the rice farmers who vote for them, ignored the South which didn't. This govt is now skating on thin ice, they know it, now the timing is right to pressure them. The govt can't afford not to come to an agreement.
