Two grenades fired at Chaeng Wattana protest site

BANGKOK: -- Two grenades thought to be M79 type were fired into the Chaeng Wattana protest site of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee at about 8.30 pm Thursday night. There were no casualties however.

The first grenade smashed into the road parallel to a pedestrian overpass in front of the Department of Special Investigation while the second exploded next to a women’s toilet behind a tent of medical staff.

Phra Buddha Issara, PDRC core leader at Chaeng Wattana later ordered guards to spread out around the protest site to ensure security for the protesters. He also inspected the scenes of the explosions.

Glad nobody was hurt but either these M79 grenade launchers / grenades are past their sell by date or the operators are completely incompetent.

Or perhaps it wasn't grenades at all?

Or perhaps they wanted to scare not kill.

Sounds like you WANT people to get hurt.

Bit bloodthirsty aren't you!

Some grenade, eh? Couldn't even make more than a couple of tiny holes in a plastic hosepipe! More likely to ba a firecracker thrown just to keep the idiots on their toes.

I wish that none of that ever goes close to your head. But it if it ever does, I hope that your head is harder than the tree or the floor tiles that you can see on the picture.

Really...? I can promise you, you wouldn't want to be standing next to it when it went off...!!

Red terrorism as usual probably from the red idiots from pattumtani. This time they were relatively harmless (the grenades) I doubt they were the real thing or more damage would have done. However I am sure they could do damage if landed at the wrong place.

Do you think it is a game? M79 is not a large explosive, but Google M79 attack victim and see for yourselves the harm that it can do.

edit;

btw. What a coincidence that the first result that comes on my Google is this one, dedicated to the Red Shirts:

The M-79 grenade explosive head is rather small..

It has an explosive inside and there is a piece of brittle wire wound around the explosive with small nicks in that wire.

When the explosive goes off all those nicks in the brittle wire make the wire fragment into small pieces of wire that act as shrapnel.

The purpose of an M-79 is to cause casualties in a crowd by shrapnel wounds from those small pieces of fragmented brittle wire.

Quite often you won't see much of anything obvious where a M-79 has exploded, mainly because the pieces of wire are so small.

it won't show much a crater because all the fragments are small pieces of wire, hard to see, but they are more than enough to cause wounds in human flesh.

M-79 grenades are really designed to cause casualties in a crowed area, if it is fired into an open area, without a crowd of people in that area, the results are very unimpressive to see afterwards..

There are very little large pieces shrapnel to be found because the wire fragments are so small.

And often there is not much of a crater because the M-79 warhead explodes on contact and most of the blast only goes into fragmenting that wire up and out to cause wounds to people in the crowd near where it lands.

If there is no one or few people near where the warhead lands, often no one is hurt.

So that just shows the warhead was fired away from a crowded area and not really intended to hurt anyone.

if it had landed in a crowd, the casualties from shrapnel wounds would have been much worse.

PDRC leaders and Democrats remain targets of violent attacks

chaeng-wattana-bomb-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Two M 79 deadly grenades were fired into the protest site of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) in Bangkok and a hand grenade was thrown at the house of a Democrat and activist in Ratchaburi last night but caused no injury in both attacks. Small bombs were also thrown at another protest site at Makkawan bridge but caused no injury.

The attack on the Chaeng Wattana protest site occupied by anti government protesters under the leadership of Laung Poo Buddha-issara happened at about 8.20 p.m.

Two loud explosions were heard. Security guard of the protesters and soldiers rushed to inspect the first scene near the tent of protesters under the pedestrian overpass. It was found to be shrapnel of M 79 grenade. It was fired into the protest site but hit the overpass instead.

The second M79 hit the toilet tent of women. But nobody was hurt.

The Chaeng Wattana protest site was a gun battle zone between red shirt supporters of election and unknown group of armed men clad in black coming out unexpectedly to protect the protesters last Saturday which left a dozens injured, including red-shirts, protesters and passers-by.
The armed red-shirt supporters were forced to quickly retreat after the intervention of the mystery armed men.

Earlier, PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban asked the abbot to dismantle the protest site on Chaeng Wattana to join the Lard Phrao protest site citing security reason, but was rejected with reason that it was a significant strategic location to mount pressure on the caretaker government because it is near Government Centre Complex.

Meanwhile, several loud explosion of the deadly giant firecrackers also rocked the protest site at Makkawan bridge near Government House. Nobody was hurt.

Protesters here laid siege to Government House which is the official office of the caretaker prime minister for months. The seizure forced the caretaker premier and her cabinet to have no office to work and therefore have to use the compound of Army, the Air Force, the Supreme Command, the National Police Office as temporary venue for cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile in Ratchaburi province, a former election candidate of the Democrat party Mrs Kallaya Sitinswakul alerted the police after a hand grenade was thrown at the front gate of her house on Katathorn road in Muang district last night.
The house is also an office of the Democrat party.

She told the police that her driver’s wife heard a bang at the gate as she was about to come out of her car to enter the house.
The bang was caused by the impact of the grenade hitting the gate, she said.
She said she just returned from a farmer protest rally blockading the Wang Manao intersection on Rama II road.
She said she joined the PDRC protests several times and had became a target of gun attack recently.
The attack last night was purely politically-motivated, she said.

Police inspecting the scene said it is a MK 2 hand grenade. The safety pin had been pulled out but luckily it did not explode.

M-79 grenades fired at Chaeng Wattana protest site, no injuries reported
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 7 --Two M-79 grenades were fired at the anti-government protest site at Chaeng Wattana, damaging a medical service station and a makeshift bathroom tent but no injuries were reported.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)'s Erawan Medical Centre reported bomb-like sounds were heard twice at the medical service tent at the protest site at the Government Complex around 8.30pm last night.

M-79 grenades were reportedly the source of the explosions, one falling at a footbridge over the medical service tent and another hitting a nearby temporary bathroom for woman protesters.

There were no injuries reported from the attacks.

It was believed that the grenades were fired from launcher and passing over the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) headquarters to test the path of the grenades.

At around midnight another explosion was heard at Makhawan Rangsan Bridge on Ratchadamnoen Avenue, with no injuries report.

In the western province of Ratchaburi, the office of the Democrat Party was attacked with a hand grenade but it failed to explode. (MCOT online news)

Two grenades? That's all? Just another day in Bangkok with the retard protests.

coffee1.gif

Is your definition of a retard someone prepared to stand up for their principles even when subject to regular attacks?

A retard, for me, is someone who goes to protest for something without even knowing what it is going on behind the scenes, screaming for Democracy while at the same time blocking elections, protesting against corruption while listening to one of the most corrupt politicians in the country's history, asking for reforms and when asked what they would be, he answers "we're still working on that", thinks private militias shooting at civilians in the city is okay, etc.

For me, that is a retard. You might have a different opinion and I respect that.

According to Chalerm, this attack was perpetrated on the PDRC by themselves. When a man like that is in a position of power, in his capacity to refute reason itself, conduct his own investigations, make his own outlandish conclusions, and backed by no evidence - it simply fuels people's desire for reform, and their exodus from an administration that no longer places much of any weight in due process or the protection of its citizens.

Excellent assessment from someone who knows what they are talking about. Many thanks.

Returning to the attack, either it was meant to be a warning or a show of strength without the fallout or the guys who fired them were amateurs.

Best example of retarded is, hands down, your posts.

Standing in the face of PTP using the demonstrations as a tool for change and a statement to PTP? Guess you prefer marxism, communism.

I have a different opinion because I've got relatives, friends, and coworkers that have been protesting for the last 3 months, and they are still there. Protecting their country against corruption, abuse of power, disrespect of laws, and family mafia.

But I am not going to try to explain further, because a retarded is a person that does not want or cannot understand. I am not going to waste my time.

Similar to many pro and anti democracy posters on TV.
