BANGKOK: -- A former special branch police officer was shot and burnt alive in Yaha District of Yala Province this morning.

The shooting was reported at about 7.00 a.m. inside a no-name petrol station near Samyaek Kamnan in Tambon Yaha of Yaha District.

The burned out body of the victim was later identified as the 64-year old retired special branch police officer identified as Po Sgt Ekapong Sakdayuth.

Initial autopsy showed he was shot on the head with a 9 mm pistol.

An energy-drink bottle with remains of gasoline was found two meters from the body with a hand-written message attacking the officer on a A-4 size paper.

Investigation later revealed that after retiring from government service, the former special branch police officer ran an oil business and also used the petrol station as his home office.’

Neighbors told the police that they heard two gunshots before becoming out to find that the body of the victim lying on the ground with fire burning.

They helped to put out the fire and then alerted the police.

Police said they believed the murder was a one-man job and the man might be acquainted with the victim.

After the shooting and killing, the man ransacked his office and escaped with unknown cash and a computer notebook, the police said. But they also did not rule out insurgency.

Late this morning the police have detained a man they suspected to have connection with the murder as he had a criminal record of extorting money from the former officer. The police later transferred the suspect to the rangers for further investigation as they strongly believed he knew of the shooting, and might also involve in other violent attacks.

could well be a robbery made to look like the insurgency, burning the body just to make it look like the other killings to cover their tracks.

Any murder is one too many.

This whole sh*t taking place down South has nothing to do with religion. It is about a smuggling maffia utilizing the religion for their very own purpose and profit.

As an indication: There are many more Muslim being killed than Buddhist by the "freedon fighters".

Sorry to say this, but maybe it's time for "Summary Executions" of all terrorists. It is what they do to the innocent victims. So why not them? Fair is fair. If you tried them in a court and they get a jail sentence and later released, they go right back to what they did before. This has been proven by the release of the Getmo prisoners.

Is the man in custody a terrorist or just a local thugg? Sounded like an enforcer for a local loan shark. Hope we get the details on a follow up story.

its very rare in thailand for the outcomes of criminal proceedings to be made public

probably because it doesnt even make court and the bib get an envelope to lose the evidence and sweep it under the rug ..........

Big article about getting rid of the death penalty in the paper today. Having mixed feelings. So people just don't deserve to be alive by their actions. Especially when they don't show any concern or emotion for the lives they take. And all over "religious belief" and when they don't even follow their own set of rules and laws.

Do you know what did this man do before? Some-one well knows, who shot him. There are two sides of every coin.

What an idiotic statement to make. I suppose the teacher that suffered the same fate had a dark side too? I say rest in peace to the victims, at least they don't have to suffer people such as Loles again.
